Selenium 4 is the forward-looking choice for maintained test suites: it uses the W3C WebDriver standard and drops the legacy JSON Wire Protocol. Selenium 3’s later releases also became W3C-compliant, so many tests can carry over—but capability configuration, Actions usage, deprecated APIs, and runtime compatibility deserve review before upgrading.
How Selenium 3 and Selenium 4 differ
| Area | Selenium 3 | Selenium 4 |
|---|---|---|
| WebDriver protocol | Supported the legacy JSON Wire Protocol as well as W3C WebDriver during its development. Later Selenium 3 code became W3C-compliant around version 3.11. | Uses W3C WebDriver and removes support for the legacy protocol. Selenium’s upgrade guide |
| Capabilities | Older code commonly used Desired Capabilities classes and names such as version and platform. |
Uses browser-specific options classes and standard names such as browserVersion and platformName. Custom capability names need a vendor prefix. Selenium browser options documentation |
| Locators | Traditional locator strategies. | Adds Relative Locators, which identify an element in relation to another element that is easier to find. Selenium locator strategies |
| Driver management | Browser drivers were commonly managed manually. | Selenium Manager was included starting with Selenium 4.6 for driver management. Automated browser management is documented from 4.11; it acts as a fallback when the binding does not find a supplied driver. Selenium Manager documentation |
What the protocol change means
The key distinction is not that every Selenium 3 test used a different protocol. Selenium’s project documentation says code in later Selenium 3 releases became compliant with W3C WebDriver around version 3.11. Selenium 3 nevertheless supported the older JSON Wire Protocol during its history; Selenium 4 removes that compatibility and standardizes on W3C WebDriver. Selenium’s upgrade guide
If your Selenium 3 tests already use W3C-compliant commands and configuration, they are more likely to continue working with Selenium 4. That is not a guarantee for a particular suite: old capability formats, deprecated or internal APIs, and Actions code can introduce migration work.
What to review when upgrading
1. Update the language binding carefully
Upgrade the Selenium dependency through the package manager or build tool for the language you use. Selenium 4.0.0 was announced on October 13, 2021, but that launch version is not a recommendation for a new upgrade. Check the official release and binding documentation for the current version and the language binding’s runtime requirements rather than relying on an old version number. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Replace legacy capability configuration
Use the browser’s options class in place of older Desired Capabilities patterns where the binding expects it. Standard capability names include browserVersion and platformName, rather than older names such as version and platform. Prefix custom capabilities with the vendor namespace required by the remote end or cloud provider. For examples by browser, see Selenium’s Browser Options documentation.
3. Inspect Actions and non-public API use
Selenium’s upgrade guidance specifically calls out Capabilities and Actions as areas that can affect an upgrade. Search for deprecated or internal Selenium methods as well; code that relies on implementation details may need replacement with supported public APIs. Upgrade to Selenium 4

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Check the full execution environment
Confirm that the chosen Selenium binding supports your language runtime, and verify compatibility with the browsers, Grid, and hosted testing service used by your team. Requirements differ by binding and change over time; consult the current language-specific documentation instead of assuming one runtime matrix applies to every Selenium language.
5. Run the suite on the infrastructure that matters
Run your project’s tests against the browsers and execution environments used in practice, including remote sessions if applicable. A successful dependency upgrade alone cannot establish that an application-specific suite or provider configuration still works.

Relative Locators and other Selenium 4 capabilities
Relative Locators let a test find an element by its spatial relationship to another element—for example, locating a label beside a reliably identifiable control. They complement, rather than replace, traditional strategies such as ID, CSS selector, and XPath. Use a stable anchor where possible: a spatial relationship can become fragile when a page layout changes. See the official locator documentation for the available locator strategies.
Driver setup: Selenium Manager is version-dependent
Selenium Manager should not be described as a feature present in the original Selenium 4.0 release. It shipped with Selenium releases starting at 4.6 for driver management; browser management is documented from 4.11. It runs as a fallback when the binding cannot find a driver supplied through the existing setup, so teams can continue managing drivers manually if that better fits their environment. Confirm behavior and requirements in the Selenium Manager documentation.

Common upgrade problems and what to check
- Remote session rejects capabilities: Replace legacy names and structures with W3C-compliant capability names and the relevant browser options class. Prefix provider-specific capabilities as that provider requires. Browser Options
- Actions behave differently or fail: Review the Actions code against the current binding and Selenium’s upgrade guidance; avoid assuming that code using older behavior will be unaffected. Upgrade guide
- Driver is not found or the browser does not start: Check whether your setup supplies a compatible driver, whether the browser and driver versions match, and whether Selenium Manager is available in the Selenium version you installed. Remember that Manager’s milestones began at 4.6, not 4.0. Selenium Manager
- Build fails after changing Selenium: Check the current minimum runtime for your specific language binding and resolve dependency conflicts through the project’s package manager. The applicable requirement depends on the binding and release.
- Tests pass locally but fail on Grid or a cloud service: Compare the local and remote browser options, custom capability prefixes, provider requirements, and remote Selenium compatibility. Run the suite against the actual remote configuration rather than inferring compatibility from local results.
When should you upgrade?
For an actively maintained suite, upgrading to a supported Selenium 4 release is generally the practical direction: it uses W3C WebDriver exclusively and provides newer capabilities such as Relative Locators and, in later 4.x releases, Selenium Manager. Plan a compatibility review rather than treating the dependency change as proof that every legacy test will work unchanged. Selenium’s upgrade guide is the starting point; test your own binding, browser matrix, and infrastructure.

If your goal is to capture website screenshots rather than exercise browser interactions, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot flow can accept cookie banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.
