Sega’s life-size SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DNA FIGURE is a 35th-anniversary art collectible that the company says contains synthesized DNA designed around Sonic’s fictional traits—not a biological sample from a real hedgehog. Famitsu reported on October 9, 2026, that the serial-numbered, made-to-order figure costs ¥3,300,000 including tax, with reservations scheduled to close November 1, 2026. The often-repeated $21,000 figure is only an approximate conversion; Sega’s reported price is in yen.
Does the Sonic figure really contain DNA?
According to Sega, yes—but “Sonic’s DNA” describes the project’s character-design concept, not a biological specimen. For the figure, Sega says it translated Sonic’s appearance, personality and abilities into DNA, synthesized that DNA and sealed it inside the figure with a protective capsule. The company’s June 16 announcement describes traits including Sonic’s blue body, super-speed, boost and spin abilities, love of adventure, free-spirited personality and inability to swim. Sega’s announcement presents this as an expression of the fictional character, not evidence that a real Sonic exists or supplied genetic material.

The public descriptions do not specify the nucleotide sequence, chemical composition, synthesis protocol, capsule material or safety documentation. Those technical details are not established by the available announcements, so the figure’s premise should not be mistaken for a disclosed scientific process or a real hedgehog genome.

This is best understood as a character-art collectible built around Sega’s DNA metaphor, rather than an ordinary Sonic statue or a scientific artifact. The documented details identify it as life-size, serial-numbered and made to order; they do not provide a specific conventional figure for a like-for-like price or specification comparison. Sega’s announcement also says the Sonic series has surpassed 1.77 billion units, combining full games and free-to-play titles—not paid game sales alone.
