Sega Says It Won’t Entrust Games’ Creative Work to AI, but Its Use Is More Nuanced

Sega is using AI for business efficiency and ideas, but it is being cautious about AI in game development and says it does not entrust games’ creative aspects to AI. That is the position attributed to senior executive officer and deputy chief business officer Tsuyoshi Saito in a Nikkei interview, as reported by VGC on October 6, 2026. It does not mean Sega has ruled out every AI-assisted task connected to making or publishing games.

What Sega’s reported position means

Saito’s remarks draw a distinction between using AI as a work aid and delegating creative decisions or work on games to AI. VGC reports that Sega uses AI to improve efficiency in publishing and corporate departments and to generate business ideas, while approaching its use in game development cautiously. The English wording is VGC’s rendering of Saito’s comments; the original Nikkei page was not available for independent verification.

The statement is best read as a current reported boundary, not a permanent company-wide rule covering every tool, division, or production stage. Sega’s public descriptions from other teams show AI-assisted work in development and publishing, with different purposes and levels of human oversight.

Is Sega using generative AI in its games?

There is no single yes-or-no answer unless “in its games” is defined. Sega has described generative AI being used to help with development tasks, but that does not establish that AI-generated content was included in a released game.

Use case What Sega or reporting said What it establishes
Fictional football-player models In an interview published on Sega’s careers site in October 2025, 4th Development Division vice executive manager Katsuya Hisai said the division used generative AI to produce 3D models of fictional football players more efficiently. Sega’s 4th Development Division interview An AI-assisted development workflow was described; the interview does not establish that AI made final creative decisions.
AI commentary Hisai said the division was exploring AI commentary for spectators, while noting technical challenges and the need to preserve an enjoyable experience. Sega’s 4th Development Division interview Exploration, not confirmation that AI commentary shipped in a game.
Crazy Taxi: World Tour background assets In a June 7, 2026 report, Game Informer said Sega described generative AI as supporting background-asset development and said generated assets were reviewed by the development team. Game Informer’s June 7 report AI support during development and human review; this wording alone does not prove generated assets appeared in the final game.
Crazy Taxi: World Tour research October coverage by VGC said Sega characterized the use as occurring in an initial research phase and said AI-created art did not appear in the game. Kotaku also described the episode as reference use rather than shipped AI-created assets. VGC’s October 6 report Kotaku’s October 6 coverage A later, more specific account of the stage and final output; it should be attributed separately from the June description.
Publishing operations In an official interview conducted in April 2026, Sega Online Mobile Publishing Division leaders described AI assistance with summarizing player feedback, compiling numerical data, preliminary promotion checks, and translation. They said humans make final judgments. Sega’s Online Mobile Publishing Division interview Administrative and analytical support, not evidence that AI independently determines a game’s creative direction.

The Crazy Taxi descriptions are not identical: the June account refers to background-asset development and review, while October reporting describes initial research and says AI-created art did not appear in the game. They should not be collapsed into a claim that AI-generated art shipped. The available accounts do not fully reconcile the different wording.

How Sega has described oversight

A report on Sega’s CEDEC 2025 presentation described internal use of generative AI for tasks such as chatbots, image and video generation, translation, email drafting, and work suggestions. It also described a Generative AI Committee, evolving internal guidance, visibility and logging of use, rights-related review, and consultation across IT, training, security, legal, and public-relations functions. Regional staff were involved because attitudes and requirements can differ by market. The report said Sega conducted compliance checks related to platform disclosure rules, including Steam’s. 4Gamer’s August 9, 2025 report on Sega’s CEDEC session

How the position developed

  • December 2025: Sega’s response to a Q2 financial-results Q&A, as reported by Nintendo Life, said the company would pursue efficiency improvements such as AI while carefully assessing appropriate use cases because adoption can face resistance in creative areas such as character creation.
