Its developer, 王龙, describes an asynchronous workflow on Cloudflare Workers that prepares uploads, queues model calls, preserves photo framing, and converts generated images into print-ready files. In the author’s small bake-off, Seedream produced the preferred framing and cleaner Standard pages, with a reported median end-to-end time of 61.7 seconds. Those findings are an eight-photo, subjective comparison—not a general model ranking.
How CrayonInk turns a photo into a coloring page
The build report describes a complete job-processing pipeline rather than a direct browser-to-model call. The reported stack is Next.js 16 deployed on Cloudflare Workers through @opennextjs/cloudflare. D1 stores jobs, accounts, credits, and spend records; R2 stores source and finished images; Queues handle generation; and Cloudflare Email Service sends operator alerts. The queue is configured with max_batch_size = 1 and max_retries = 3. A cron trigger runs every 15 minutes to recover stuck jobs, refund a page credit, remove source photos older than 24 hours, and clear expired results and PDFs. These are implementation details reported by the developer, not an independently audited architecture. Read the CrayonInk build report.

- Prepare the photo in the browser. The app resizes it to a maximum 2048-pixel long edge, re-encodes it as JPEG at quality 0.9, and strips EXIF data. The developer says upload occurs only after the user selects Generate.
- Create and queue a job. The backend checks available credits, creates a D1 job record, and enqueues a message for the consumer.
- Generate the image. The queue consumer builds a prompt from the selected style and detail settings, then sends the photo as a data URI to
fal-ai/bytedance/seedream/v5/lite/edit. - Make the result printable. The returned image is converted to grayscale, thresholded to a 1-bit PNG at 300 DPI, and padded rather than cropped to maintain the photo’s aspect ratio.
- Deliver the page. The app can provide a PNG or a one-page PDF in A4 or US Letter. It can also assemble multiple pages into a coloring-book PDF with a cover.
A separate “outline” mode runs Canny edge detection inside the Worker. The author describes it as instant and zero-cost, but says its lines are often rough and open compared with the generated pages.
Why image sizing and post-processing matter
Keep the source photo’s framing
The developer found that leaving Seedream’s output size unspecified could turn a 4:3 photo into a square composition. That changes the framing even if the result looks like a plausible coloring page. CrayonInk’s reported fix combines prompt rules against cropping, zooming, extending, adding elements, or recomposing with output dimensions calculated to match the input aspect ratio. Padding after generation preserves that framing through print preparation.

Convert a generated image into clear line art
Grayscale conversion and thresholding reduce the image to black and white, while the 1-bit PNG and 300-DPI output target home printing. The distinction matters because model output is not necessarily clean printable line art as generated. As the developer puts it, “Post-processing is what turns ‘a drawing’ into ‘something that prints cleanly,’ so every model in the comparison below went through this exact step.”
The prompt also anticipates what thresholding can do to visual detail: it prohibits shading, gray tones, color, hatching, gradients, text, watermarks, and borders, because gray areas can become unwanted black blobs. For detail-heavy photos, a “Bold & detailed” preset requests thick, even strokes, recognizable faces with open eyes, and simplified open motifs for lace, embroidery, or beading. The author also reports a line-thinning and redrawing step using a round pen—typically 9 pixels in open areas and as few as 5 pixels in dense areas such as hair and lace. These are the app’s reported settings, not universal values for other pipelines.

What the author’s model comparison found
The developer tested four model configurations on eight Wikimedia Commons photos: two adults, two family photos, two children, and two pets. Each photo was tried at two detail levels, for 64 calls total, run eight at a time. The report lists $3.37 in total spend, attributed to 王龙, 2025. Its Seedream findings are likewise the author’s figures, not independent measurements:

The other configurations were Nano Banana 2 edit (1K), GPT Image 2.5 Flare (medium), and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst (high). The author says Seedream remained the default because of framing among cheaper options and cleaner Standard pages, accepting a roughly minute-long generation time. The report describes GPT Image 2.5 Flare as a faster, cheaper challenger, but says it would need a small traffic test. The comparison is too small to establish a universal winner: it used only eight photos, and likeness and printability were visually judged rather than measured by objective recognition or print-quality metrics. The author also could not reconcile costs derived from billable units with an invoice because the billing endpoint required an admin key.

One reported failure illustrates why average scores are not the whole story: Seedream left a child’s eyes blank in one test photo at both detail levels. The simpler Canny mode also often produced lines that did not close. For a practical comparison, the relevant criteria are framing fidelity, likeness, line clarity, printability and ink density, latency, and cost—not raw generated images alone.
Cloudflare’s Seedream listing is a separate service and price
Cloudflare’s Workers AI model page identifies bytedance/seedream-5-lite as a third-party ByteDance model and displays a price of $0.035 per image on the page accessed in 2026. The page includes an env.AI.run example and documents image input: Cloudflare’s Seedream 5 Lite model page. That listing is not the same endpoint used in the build report: CrayonInk’s author says the app calls fal’s Seedream edit endpoint. The Cloudflare price should not be used to infer what a fal call costs, and model availability, options, and prices can change.

What the build report says about photo handling and provider history
The author reports discovering that sync_mode returns output inline but did not keep request input out of fal history. In checks of seven requests, the developer could retrieve full input payloads, including base64 photo data, for five. The author says they added the X-Fal-Store-IO: 0 header, an object-lifecycle preference requesting expiration after 3,600 seconds, a delayed queue check of request history, attempted deletion when data remained, and a recorded status such as not_stored, deleted, stored, pending, or error. The report says deletion requires an admin API key.

These are the developer’s observations and mitigation steps, not a general guarantee about provider retention or training. Anyone building a similar service should check the provider’s current retention terms and verify the behavior of the exact endpoint and account configuration. The report does not establish a provider-wide training policy.

How the app limits failed jobs and runaway spend
The reported product controls include sign-in for AI generation, a one-time signup credit grant, a limit of one active AI job per account, Turnstile verification, and backend spend controls. The developer describes a USD circuit breaker, grant and overall daily budgets, and alerts at 80% and 100% of configured budget. The spend ledger is charged when a request is submitted because provider costs may be incurred even if the job later fails, is blocked, or is deleted; returning a user’s page credit after failure is a separate accounting action.
This distinction is useful for any metered generation feature: a customer-credit refund does not necessarily reverse the external model charge. Queue recovery and explicit budgets address different failure modes—stuck jobs and uncontrolled spend—and both are part of the reported design.
Related Cloudflare PDF capability
Cloudflare separately documents a Browser Run /pdf endpoint that renders a webpage or custom HTML to PDF. Its documentation, updated September 26, 2026, says a Worker can call it using Workers Bindings without an API token: Cloudflare Browser Run PDF documentation. The CrayonInk build report does not say that its PDFs use this endpoint; it is an adjacent option, not part of the described implementation.
