The 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) is the backup that recreates the wallet’s private keys on a replacement compatible hardware wallet. Enter the words, in the exact original order, on the replacement device—not on a computer or website—and the wallet can be restored.
The important limitation is absolute: anyone who obtains those words can restore the wallet and transfer its assets. Recovery therefore depends less on the Ledger device than on keeping the SRP accurate, private, and physically recoverable.

What a Ledger seed phrase actually is
Ledger calls the backup a Secret Recovery Phrase; many users call it a seed phrase or mnemonic. Standard Ledger devices generate 24 words under the BIP-39 mnemonic standard. Ledger states that a 24-word phrase represents 256 bits of entropy (Ledger, 2026). The device creates the phrase from random entropy and displays it on the device’s trusted screen during setup.
The phrase is a human-readable representation of the wallet’s master secret. From it, compatible wallet software derives the private keys and public addresses used by the accounts you see in a wallet app. Ledger’s official explanation is that the SRP is “the backup of all the private keys stored in a given crypto wallet.”

Your coins and tokens are not stored inside the Ledger. Their ownership records remain on the relevant blockchains. The Ledger protects the private keys and signs transactions without exposing those keys to the connected computer. Losing the signer does not erase blockchain records; losing or exposing the phrase determines whether you can recover control.
What the device PIN does—and does not do
The PIN unlocks a particular Ledger device. It is not a substitute for the SRP and cannot restore the wallet on another device. A reset device, forgotten PIN, dead battery, or broken screen can be replaced only if the original SRP is available and legible.
How recovery works after a lost or damaged Ledger
Use a new, genuine compatible hardware wallet and restore the existing phrase during its initial setup. Labels vary by model and firmware, but the process follows this order:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Obtain a replacement hardware wallet. Inspect packaging and initialize it according to the manufacturer’s current instructions. Do not use a device that arrives with a prewritten phrase.
- Choose the existing-wallet option. During setup, select wording such as “Restore from recovery phrase” or “Use an existing recovery phrase,” rather than “Set up as new device.”
- Enter the words on the device itself. Use the Ledger’s buttons or touchscreen to enter all 24 words in their original order. Never type them into Ledger Live, a browser extension, a phone, or a computer.
- Let the device validate the phrase. BIP-39 words have a defined list and checksum. A rejected word, incorrect order, or missing word means the phrase has not been entered exactly.
- Reconnect the wallet software and add accounts. Install the relevant applications and add the same account types you used previously. The blockchain balances should appear after the software discovers the corresponding addresses.
- Verify addresses before moving funds. Compare a receiving address shown on the device’s trusted display with the address in the wallet software. A small test transaction can confirm control before a larger transfer.
Restoring a phrase does not move coins between blockchains; it recreates the keys that already control the existing addresses. If the original phrase may have been exposed, restore it only long enough to move assets to a newly generated wallet with a new phrase.

What you can recover—and what you cannot
- Recoverable with the correct 24 words: the wallet’s derived private keys, addresses, and on-chain balances supported by the wallet software and device.
- Not recoverable from the words alone: a separate BIP-39 passphrase, exchange login, PIN, two-factor authentication code, or records held by a third-party service.
- Not reversed by recovery: a transaction that was already signed and confirmed on a blockchain.
Account discovery can make a restored wallet appear incomplete if you add a different account type, use a different derivation path, or restore a passphrase-protected account incorrectly. Check the account type and passphrase before concluding that funds are missing.
How to protect the 24 words
Treat the SRP as a bearer secret: possession is control. Ledger Support explicitly says it never recommends entering an SRP into an online wallet (updated May 13, 2026). Apply these rules from the moment the phrase is generated:
- Write every word exactly, including spelling and order. Keep the numbered order; do not alphabetize or rewrite the list.
- Record it only on the device’s trusted display. Do not photograph, scan, email, message, paste, or type it into a phone or computer.
- Never disclose it to Ledger Support, a technician, a website, a recovery service, or someone contacting you by direct message. Legitimate support cannot use the phrase to verify ownership.
- Store the backup where theft, fire, water damage, and accidental disposal are all considered. A private, access-controlled location is more important than hiding it in an obvious desk drawer.
- Keep enough physical redundancy to survive a single disaster, but do not create extra copies that increase the number of people or places able to access it.
Paper versus metal storage
Paper is inexpensive and easy to create, but it can burn, tear, fade, or become unreadable after water exposure. A metal seed-phrase backup can resist common fire and water damage better, yet it does not protect against someone who steals or photographs it.
| Storage method | Strengths | Weaknesses | Best practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper | Simple, low cost, no electronics | Vulnerable to fire, water, ink fading, and tearing | Use archival-quality writing, protect from moisture, and inspect legibility periodically |
| Metal backup | Greater resistance to fire, water, and physical aging | Still vulnerable to theft; requires secure storage and careful engraving or stamping | Store privately and verify every character after recording |
| Digital file or photograph | Easy to duplicate | Exposed to malware, cloud breaches, screenshots, and accidental syncing | Do not use for an SRP |
What to do if the phrase may have leaked
Assume compromise if the words were typed into an internet-connected device, entered into a website, sent in a message, photographed, or shown to another person. Do not wait for an unauthorized transaction.

- Generate a new wallet on a clean hardware device and write down its new phrase offline.
- Verify the new receiving addresses on the device display.
- Transfer assets from the old wallet to the new wallet, prioritizing assets that can be moved quickly and leaving enough network fee currency for each transaction.
- Revoke token approvals or other on-chain permissions associated with the exposed wallet where the relevant blockchain supports that action.
- Retire the compromised phrase. Do not continue using it for “small” balances.
If an attacker has already moved funds, blockchain transactions are generally irreversible. Contacting a wallet manufacturer cannot reverse a confirmed transfer; preserve transaction IDs and report theft to the relevant exchange or authorities if appropriate.
The “25th word”: BIP-39 passphrases
The phrase “25th word” usually means an optional BIP-39 passphrase. It is not an extra replacement word and does not alter the original 24-word SRP. Instead, the passphrase is combined with those 24 words to derive a completely different set of accounts.
A single-character difference creates a different wallet. A typo can therefore produce a valid-looking account with a zero balance rather than an obvious error. The passphrase is case-sensitive, and spaces or punctuation matter.

Using a passphrase safely
- Enable it only after understanding that it adds another secret to back up.
- Record the exact passphrase separately from the 24 words, with a recovery plan that does not reveal both secrets to an untrusted person.
- Test restoration with a small balance before relying on a passphrase-protected account.
- When restoring, use the identical phrase and passphrase, then confirm the expected receiving address on the device.
Ledger does not store or back up passphrases. Ledger Academy states that forgetting one permanently removes access to its associated hidden accounts. The 24 words alone will restore the ordinary wallet, not a hidden wallet derived with an unknown passphrase.

Ledger Recover versus keeping your own backup
Ledger Recover is an optional paid recovery service and is a different model from holding the 24 words offline. Ledger describes a design in which the device encrypts and splits a version of the SRP into three fragments; each fragment is encrypted and stored by a separate independent company using hardware security modules. Subscription price, eligibility, geographic availability, identity requirements, and terms can change, so verify the current offer before relying on it.
| Consideration | Offline paper or metal backup | Ledger Recover service |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls recovery | You control the physical backup and access decisions | Recovery involves the service’s enrollment, identity checks, and participating providers |
| Online exposure | Can remain entirely offline if created and stored correctly | Uses encrypted fragments held in provider infrastructure |
| Physical durability | Metal generally withstands fire and water better than paper; both can be stolen | Depends on the service’s infrastructure rather than your local copy |
| Service dependence | No subscription or provider is required, but you must find and use the backup | Depends on service availability, eligibility, and current terms |
| Passphrase handling | You must separately record and protect any passphrase | A passphrase is still your responsibility; forgetting it can permanently block hidden accounts |
| Cost and availability | Physical materials and secure storage costs vary | Current price, supported regions, and device eligibility are not stated here; check Ledger’s current terms |
Neither model makes an exposed secret safe. Offline self-custody minimizes reliance on a provider but places all recovery responsibility on your storage plan. A managed service may provide a different path after loss, while adding provider, identity, subscription, and availability dependencies.
Troubleshooting common recovery failures
The device shows a setup screen instead of my accounts
You may have selected “set up as new” rather than restore. Stop before generating or using a new phrase, reset the device according to its current instructions, and choose the restore-existing-phrase option. A newly generated phrase will not contain the old wallet’s keys.
A word is rejected
Check the handwritten copy against the device one word at a time. Confirm spelling, order, and the total count. Do not use an online seed checker or paste the phrase into a search engine; that trades a recoverable typo for permanent exposure.
The wallet restores but balances are zero
First check for a passphrase mismatch. Then add the same account and network types used previously and allow account discovery to finish. Confirm that the receiving address on the device matches an address previously used. If the old wallet used a passphrase, an omitted or mistyped passphrase creates a different, often empty wallet.
I forgot the passphrase
There is no manufacturer reset for a forgotten BIP-39 passphrase. Try only carefully documented candidates in a controlled offline process; every incorrect candidate is a different wallet. If the exact passphrase cannot be reconstructed, the associated accounts remain inaccessible.
Quick Recap
A practical recovery checklist
- Locate the original 24-word record without photographing or digitizing it.
- Acquire a replacement compatible hardware wallet from a trusted channel.
- Initialize it and select restore-existing-phrase.
- Enter the words only on the device, in order.
- Restore any passphrase-protected accounts with the exact passphrase.
- Verify addresses on the device display before receiving or sending funds.
- If the phrase was exposed, move assets to a newly generated wallet and stop using the old phrase.
- After recovery, improve the physical backup plan and document which accounts require a separate passphrase.
