The photographs in Much Here Is Beautiful: Photography Surveys of the U.S. Bicentennial document Americans and their communities through a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) program created for the country’s 1976 Bicentennial. The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) presents 225 photographs from that larger effort in Washington, D.C., from September 18, 2026, through April 18, 2027. The exhibition is a curated selection—not a display of every image made for the program—and only selected works appear in the museum’s online gallery.
What were the Bicentennial photography surveys?
The NEA established a grant program for regional photographic projects to document the country’s people and places in connection with the 1976 U.S. Bicentennial. According to SAAM, the effort lasted six years and funded more than 70 surveys, producing thousands of photographs by more than 200 photographers.

The projects covered the Northeast, South, Midwest and West, offering a wide-ranging portrait of the United States—from California’s coast to the Kansas heartland and New York City. They were inspired by the Farm Security Administration’s photography during the Great Depression.

The scale of the original effort and the scale of the current exhibition are different. SAAM says 1,000 photographs were transferred to the museum in 1983; its exhibition brings together 225 photographs selected through research in SAAM’s holdings and collections nationwide. The selection includes newly surfaced and previously unseen works, and places the Bicentennial projects within a longer history of federal survey photography reaching back to the 19th century. See SAAM’s exhibition page and selected online gallery entries.

What can you see in the exhibition?
The photographs bring national history down to particular people, work and places. Examples in SAAM’s online gallery include Terry Evans’s 1974 Migrant Workers, from the Kansas Documentary Survey Project; Wendy Ewald’s 1977 Rena Meade’s Quilt; Ted Wathen’s 1975 Former Company Houses, Jenkins, Letcher County, Kentucky; and Robert K. Hower’s July 4, 1976, Louisville, KY.
The dates show why it is inaccurate to describe all 225 photographs as images made in 1976: the exhibition’s subject is the broader NEA Bicentennial survey effort, and its selection includes work from other years as well. The works also reflect the surveys’ regional scope rather than a single, uniform account of the country.

How this project differs from DOCUMERICA
The NEA’s Bicentennial surveys are sometimes easy to confuse with another federal photography effort, but they were separate projects. The NEA program funded regional surveys for the Bicentennial, with an express focus on people and places. DOCUMERICA was an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) project that ran from 1971 to 1977, documenting environmental problems, EPA activities and everyday life.
| Project | Agency and focus | Scale and access |
|---|---|---|
| NEA Bicentennial surveys | National Endowment for the Arts; regional projects documenting people and places around the 1976 Bicentennial | More than 70 surveys and more than 200 photographers; SAAM’s exhibition selects 225 photographs, with selected works online |
| DOCUMERICA | Environmental Protection Agency; environmental issues, EPA activities and everyday life | More than 15,000 images are available through the National Archives Catalog; browse the DOCUMERICA collection |
The National Archives also describes DOCUMERICA as geographically organized and inspired by the Farm Security Administration. Its own 1972 exhibition, “DOCUMERICA 1,” displayed 155 photographs by 23 of nearly 100 project photographers. Those figures belong to DOCUMERICA, not the NEA surveys. The two projects have distinct commissioning agencies, collections and access paths; DOCUMERICA’s archive is not a source for the image count in SAAM’s Bicentennial exhibition.
