Start with an account and device inventory
Before changing settings, list every internet-connected camera, doorbell, recorder, viewing app, browser account and smart-home integration that can reach a feed. Include cameras that store clips in the cloud as well as models that record only to a local card or recorder. Identify which login controls the camera itself and which login controls cloud storage; they may be separate credentials.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Find the camera’s local administrator or device account.
- Find the cloud, app or web portal account used for recordings and remote viewing.
- List family members, installers and integrations that currently have access.
- Record whether the camera is reached from outside the home network, and whether the router has UPnP or port-forwarding rules.
Keep this inventory private. It gives you a baseline for removing old accounts and checking that a security change did not silently disable an alarm, notification or automation you still need.

1. Replace default credentials and require a login
Change the camera’s factory password
Open a common path such as Device settings → Security, Administration → Users or System → Account, then replace any factory username or password. Some cameras use a code printed on a label; treat that code as a starting credential, not a permanent secret. Use a long, unique password that is not used on email, shopping, Wi-Fi or any other service. A password manager can generate and store one without making you reuse a short pattern.
Check for a setting such as Require password, Authentication or Local login. Make sure it is enabled for the live feed, recorded clips and administrative page. A camera that is reachable on your home network without authentication can still expose video even if its cloud account is well protected. Save the new password in a secure place before signing out.
Secure the cloud and app account separately
If recordings or remote viewing use a cloud account, change that account’s password as well. Make it unique to the service; changing only the camera’s local password does not protect a compromised cloud login. Sign out unknown sessions and remove old phones, browsers or authorized viewers from the account’s Devices, Sessions or Authorized access page when those controls exist. The Federal Trade Commission’s camera guidance covers both camera credentials and the account used to view feeds: FTC guidance on securing home security cameras.
2. Turn on two-factor authentication
In the cloud or app account, look under Account → Security, Login protection or Two-step verification. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA), also called multi-factor authentication (MFA), using an authenticator app, security key or text-message option offered by the service. An authenticator app or security key generally avoids dependence on a phone number, but use the strongest method the service supports.
Store recovery codes offline. Test a sign-in from a second device while you still have access, and verify that every administrator—not just the owner—has their own protected account. 2FA usually protects the cloud identity, not a local camera login, so keep the device password unique too. If the service offers no 2FA, compensate with a unique password, prompt removal of unknown sessions and minimal sharing permissions.

3. Update firmware and the viewing software
Update both halves of the system
Camera firmware and the companion mobile, desktop or browser application are separate software. Install current versions of both. In the camera interface, look under System → Firmware, Maintenance → Update or About; in the app store, check the app’s update page. Security fixes can address defects in the camera even when the app itself has no visible change.
Enable Automatic updates or Auto-download security updates if the camera offers it. If updates are manual, set a recurring reminder and check the manufacturer’s support page for end-of-support notices. Keep the camera powered during an update, follow the documented reboot process and verify that recording and notifications resume afterward. The FTC and UK National Cyber Security Centre both advise keeping smart-camera software current: FTC camera guidance and NCSC smart-camera guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Enable encryption, firewall controls and HTTPS
Use the camera’s built-in protections
Look in Security, Network or Advanced for switches named Encryption, Encrypted stream, Secure transport or Firewall. Turn them on when available. The FTC’s specific instruction is: “If you have the option to turn on encryption and a firewall for your camera, do it.” This is from its How To Secure Your Home Security Cameras guidance, dated February 2023.
Encryption can apply separately to video, audio, stored clips and account traffic. Enable each relevant option, then confirm that every viewer—mobile app, browser and recorder—still connects. If an older recorder cannot use an encrypted stream, isolate it on the local camera network rather than weakening encryption for every device.
Check browser connections
When administering a camera in a browser, confirm that the address begins with https:// and that the browser does not show a certificate warning. Check both the login page and the page after signing in; a site that protects only the password form can still expose the feed or session. Never enter credentials on an unencrypted page. A mobile app may hide the URL, so consult its security documentation for whether its camera connection is encrypted.

5. Harden the router and Wi-Fi carrying the feed
Secure the router itself
Router controls matter because a camera inherits the network’s exposure. Change the router administrator password from its default, install current router software, keep its firewall enabled and disable administration from the public internet unless you have a specific, well-understood need. Use WPA2 or WPA3 for Wi-Fi with a strong, unique wireless password; do not use an open network or an obsolete encryption mode.
Review the router’s connected-device list and remove unknown devices. Rename devices clearly so a camera, recorder and phone are distinguishable. If your router supports a separate guest, IoT or VLAN network, place cameras there. Verify the consequences first: guest isolation may prevent a phone on the main network from discovering the camera, so you may need an allowed management connection while blocking internet-to-camera access.
Separate camera traffic when practical
A separate network limits what an exposed camera can reach. Put cameras and recorders on the isolated network, keep personal computers and phones on the primary network, and allow only the local viewing or management traffic you require. Follow the router manual for inter-network rules; an incorrect isolation rule can disable local recording, doorbell chimes or emergency notifications.
6. Disable or restrict remote viewing
If you do not need to see footage while away from home, turn off the camera’s Remote viewing, Cloud access, Internet access or similar switch. The UK National Cyber Security Centre states: “If you do not need the feature that lets you remotely view camera footage via the internet, we recommend you disable it.” That recommendation appears in its home smart-camera guidance, published and reviewed 3 March 2020, version 1.0.
Test the effect before relying on the change. Disabling remote viewing can also stop push alerts, away-from-home playback, cloud recording, voice-assistant routines or other smart-home integrations. If those functions are necessary, keep remote access enabled but restrict it:

- Allow only named accounts and known devices.
- Remove old phones, tablets, installers and former household members.
- Use encrypted feeds and require sign-in rather than a public share link.
- Turn off audio or two-way talk remotely if you do not need it.
- Set the shortest practical session lifetime and require reauthentication for administration.
Do not publish a camera feed to the open internet. A link that works without a login should be treated as public, even if you never posted it.
7. Review UPnP and port forwarding on the router
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) can let cameras or applications open router ports automatically. In the router’s Advanced, NAT or Port forwarding area, inspect rules that point to a camera, recorder or unknown internal address. Delete rules you no longer need. Consider disabling UPnP and manual port forwarding when remote access does not require them, following the NCSC’s advice to assess both features.
This is a network-wide decision, not just a camera switch. Disabling UPnP can interrupt game consoles, media servers, printers, video calls or other applications that depend on automatic discovery. Removing a port-forwarding rule can stop a legitimate remote recorder or integration. Make a note of existing rules, change one thing at a time, and test required services from inside and outside the home before declaring the configuration complete. If a service needs remote access, prefer its documented encrypted relay or VPN method over exposing a camera’s administration port directly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Minimize sharing and separate roles
Use Viewer, Guest or Live-only roles for people who need to watch video, and reserve Administrator rights for the smallest possible number of trusted accounts. Separate roles prevent a viewer from changing network, recording or user settings when the camera supports them. Give each person an individual account rather than sharing one password; individual accounts make removal and auditing possible.
Open the app’s Sharing, Users or Permissions page on a regular schedule. Remove anyone who no longer needs access, revoke invitations that were never accepted and rotate the camera password after an installer or contractor’s access ends. Review integrations such as monitoring services, voice assistants and automation platforms; revoke tokens for services you have stopped using. The FTC’s broader connected-device guidance recommends controlling who can access internet-connected devices: FTC guidance on securing internet-connected devices at home.

9. Inspect access logs and device alerts
If the camera or cloud account offers Access history, Login activity, Audit log or security notifications, review it for unfamiliar IP addresses, devices, locations or access times. An IP address may belong to a mobile carrier or a shared household connection, so treat it as a clue rather than proof. Correlate an unfamiliar event with your own travel, VPN use and household activity.
- Save relevant log entries or screenshots before changing settings.
- Sign out all sessions if the service provides that control.
- Change both local and cloud passwords, then enable 2FA.
- Remove unknown viewers, devices, integrations and port-forwarding rules.
- Update firmware, the app and the router before reconnecting remote access.
If the camera has no logs, enable account security alerts and monitor for unexpected password-reset messages, camera movement, audio activation or missing recordings. A factory reset may be necessary after suspected compromise, but follow the manual because resetting can erase evidence, recordings or configuration. Reconfigure with new credentials before placing the camera back online.
10. Keep a maintenance schedule
Security settings drift as people change phones, move routers or add integrations. Once a month, check for firmware and app updates, review signed-in devices and remove stale viewers. Every few months, inspect router firmware, Wi-Fi encryption, UPnP and port-forwarding rules. After a household change, lost phone, contractor visit or suspicious alert, repeat the credential, sharing and session review immediately.

| Separate camera network | Limits a camera’s reach to personal devices and data. | Local discovery and management may need explicit router rules. |
Model-specific limitations to expect
Not every IP camera offers a local administrator account, 2FA, encryption choices, firewall controls, access logs, role-based sharing or automatic updates. Some functions are controlled entirely by the cloud service; others appear only in a web administration page and not in the mobile app. A label such as Privacy may mean a physical shutter rather than network access, while Secure connection may protect only cloud traffic.
Use the exact manual and support documentation for your model to confirm what a switch protects, whether a change applies to every camera or only one, and how to recover if remote access is disabled. If a setting is absent, compensate elsewhere: enforce a strong account password, protect the router, isolate the camera network, remove unnecessary sharing and avoid exposing ports. Treat every new camera or recorder as untrusted until it has gone through the same checklist.
