Where the Child’s Feeding Grounds key is located
The location most often associated with the second Blackmarrow Key is Child’s Feeding Grounds in the Sanguine Caverns. The route begins at Widow’s Overlook and leads through the cavern area to The Lost Child. The key is reported to become available only after that encounter is completed.
This is a location guide rather than a guarantee about inventory numbering. If another Blackmarrow Key is already in your inventory, Child’s Feeding Grounds may be your second pickup. If you collected a different key first, the same item here can appear as a different ordinal in your own save.

Step-by-step route from Widow’s Overlook
- Start at Widow’s Overlook. Use the area as the route’s starting point and follow the path leading into the Sanguine Caverns.
- Enter the Sanguine Caverns. Continue through the cavern route rather than leaving for another region. The relevant landmark is deeper inside the caverns, at Child’s Feeding Grounds.
- Find The Lost Child. Progress until you reach the boss encounter named The Lost Child.
- Defeat The Lost Child. Do not expect the key interaction to be available before the encounter is cleared. The route reports tie access to the post-boss state.
- Locate the Child’s Feeding Grounds beacon. After the fight, identify the beacon in the area. This beacon is the reliable navigation landmark across the different accounts of the pickup.
- Search behind the beacon. Check the space immediately behind it for a newly accessible room or a sarcophagus. One guide describes the key as being inside that sarcophagus.
- If the room is still closed, inspect the former Ova location. An alternate account says to cleanse the corruption surrounding the Ova, collect the reported +26 Ova reward, then return to the beacon. The room behind the Ova’s former position is said to open on that return trip.
- Confirm the item in your inventory before leaving. Make sure the Blackmarrow Key pickup has registered. If you leave without confirming it, you may have to retrace the cavern route and repeat the beacon interaction.
The post-boss interaction has two reported versions
The route landmark is consistent, but the final room interaction is not described identically by every guide. Treat the following as two accounts of the same Child’s Feeding Grounds objective, not as two separate keys.

The available community reporting does not conclusively explain whether this difference comes from progression state, route variation, game version or wording. For that reason, use a practical fallback: after the boss, check the beacon, then check the Ova area and return to the beacon if necessary. Do not assume that finding no sarcophagus interaction means the key is absent.

What to do when the room does not open
If the beacon area appears unchanged, work through these checks in order:

- Verify the boss state. Confirm that The Lost Child was defeated in the current run. The reported route places the access condition after this encounter.
- Recheck the beacon itself. Stand close enough to trigger the interaction prompt and inspect the space behind it, not only the approach path in front of it.
- Return to the Ova site. Follow the alternate account: cleanse the corruption, collect the +26 Ova reward, and then go back to the beacon.
- Inspect both possible containers. Depending on the route or build, the relevant interaction may be a sarcophagus or a doorway into the room behind the former Ova spot.
- Check your inventory. The key may already have been collected even if the room’s visual state is confusing. Confirm before repeating the route.
- Account for unconfirmed reporting. A community wiki marks the location as unconfirmed, so an unchanged room cannot currently be attributed to one documented cause with certainty.
Why your “second” key may not be the same as someone else’s
“Second Blackmarrow Key” describes pickup order, not a universal item number tied to Child’s Feeding Grounds. NerdsChalk’s route uses that ordinal for the key it discusses, but the same guide notes that the order changes according to which key a player obtains first.

Other reported Blackmarrow Key routes include locations connected with Night Mode and a hidden Marrow Keep dungeon. Those reports are useful context for inventory order, but they do not replace the Child’s Feeding Grounds route described here. If you already opened one of those locations, the Sanguine Caverns key can be your second pickup; if you opened Child’s Feeding Grounds first, it cannot be.
Use the area name when troubleshooting with another player: say “the Blackmarrow Key at Child’s Feeding Grounds” rather than relying only on “the second key.” That avoids confusing a different pickup order with a different location.

What the Blackmarrow Key opens
Blackmarrow Keys are reported to open Shade chests near the Marrow Keep elevator. Each chest consumes one key. The Shade obtained from a chest is a cosmetic recolor for its corresponding Shell, not a reported stat upgrade.

Because the key is consumed for each chest, decide which unlocked Shell you want to recolor before interacting with a Shade chest. The practical sequence is:

- Unlock the Shell you want to use.
- Travel to the Shade chest near the Marrow Keep elevator.
- Check that the chest corresponds to the Shell you intend to recolor.
- Spend the Blackmarrow Key only after confirming the cosmetic choice.
The key’s reported purpose is appearance customization. Do not spend it expecting a combat-stat increase or a new ability unless a later game update explicitly changes how Shades work.
How the conflicting instructions affect your route
You do not need to choose a completely different cavern path because of the disagreement. Both accounts point to the same progression chain:
- Widow’s Overlook leads into the Sanguine Caverns.
- The Lost Child is the required boss encounter on the route.
- Child’s Feeding Grounds and its beacon are the shared landmark.
- The uncertainty concerns the final interaction: sarcophagus versus a return after cleansing the Ova corruption.
This distinction matters because searching an unrelated region will not resolve a beacon interaction that has not yet been triggered. Finish the boss encounter first, then perform both post-boss checks if the first account does not match what you see.
Reliability and version caveats
The Child’s Feeding Grounds directions come from guide and video reporting rather than an official item database or a developer-maintained location list. One community wiki explicitly labels the Blackmarrow Key location unconfirmed. The route is therefore best treated as a guide-reported solution that may vary by progression state or build.
The game’s official site states that Mortal Shell II is available worldwide, but the available material does not establish a separate physical edition, region-specific item placement or a definitive patch note explaining the two pickup descriptions. If a future update changes the beacon prompt or Ova interaction, the named landmark remains the useful starting point, while the exact container may differ.
