For editorial teams, the safer approach is to use accurate bylines and bios, and to avoid implying that a person wrote, reviewed, or endorsed material when they did not. Author details should reflect the actual production process rather than serve as a credibility prop.
What is behind the 83% figure on self-ranking pages?
PPC Land reports that SEO consultant Lily Ray measured Google AI Overviews for 100 B2B software queries in September 2026. In that sample, brands that ranked themselves first on their own “best of” pages were omitted from the AI Overview recommendation in 83% of cases. The report gives a June comparison of 69%.

The sample is limited to B2B software queries, and the reporting does not provide enough methodological detail to treat the June-to-September change as a controlled trend.
Why do other studies appear to disagree?
The PPC Land report summarizes other findings pointing in different directions, including studies that found organic-traffic gains for many vendor-authored list pages and studies reporting different recommendation rates across AI assistants. These results do not necessarily contradict Ray’s figure: they examine different samples, platforms, and outcomes.
