Technology is changing search marketing by adding AI-generated answers, conversational search, and image-based discovery—and by changing how businesses measure visibility. The practical response is not to abandon SEO or chase an assumed “AI ranking” trick. Keep pages crawlable and useful, make content distinct and reliable, and use available search reports to understand where impressions come from. The evidence and product details below focus on Google Search; they should not be generalized to every search platform.
What is changing in search marketing?
Search is expanding beyond a list of links for typed queries. Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as generative AI Search features built on its Search index and core Search systems. Its documentation describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out: systems can retrieve relevant indexed pages and explore related queries to respond to a broader question. That makes discoverability and useful source material important, but Google’s guidance does not establish a separate, guaranteed “AI ranking” formula.

AI Overviews and AI Mode are different experiences
Google describes AI Overviews as AI-generated overviews within Search results, while AI Mode is a more conversational Search experience. In a May 2026 product account, Google said AI Search responses were being updated with more direct links, suggested next steps, and previews to help people inspect linked sites. These are descriptions of product design, not evidence that an individual business will earn more visits.

Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode in a June 3, 2026 article. These are Google-reported audience figures, not independent audited estimates or a measure of how many prospective customers a particular company can reach.

Visual search adds another discovery route
Search can also begin with an image rather than a typed phrase. Google’s September 24, 2026 announcement described reporting for web multimodal searches, including Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search, and Chrome’s right-click “Search this image” feature. For businesses whose products, places, or work are visually discoverable, this makes image quality and page context relevant to search visibility as well as conventional text queries.
What should businesses keep doing for SEO?
Google says its existing SEO best practices remain relevant because generative AI Search features use core Search ranking and quality systems. The practical foundation is a site with pages that can be crawled and indexed, content that is useful and distinctive, clear organization, relevant high-quality images or video, and a usable page experience. Search eligibility or indexing does not guarantee that a page will appear in a result or AI feature.
- Publish original, reliable, people-first information that gives a reader a reason to visit the page.
- Make important pages accessible to crawling and indexing, and organize them so both visitors and search systems can understand their purpose.
- Use relevant, high-quality imagery or video where it helps explain the subject; visual assets should support, not substitute for, useful page content.
- Use structured data where it serves broader SEO or rich-result eligibility, not as a special requirement for generative AI visibility.
For Google Search specifically, Google says businesses do not need to create an llms.txt file, add special markup for AI Search, break every page into small chunks, rewrite content in a special AI style, or pursue inauthentic mentions. Those recommendations are not claims about how every AI platform works.
How can businesses measure search visibility now?
Search Console provides first-party reporting for some newer search experiences. Treat these reports as exposure data, not a complete measure of business performance: an impression is not a visit, and a visit is not necessarily an incremental conversion or sale.
| Search activity | What Search Console reporting covers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Generative AI Search appearances | Google said the generative AI performance insights were rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. The report includes impressions, pages, countries, dates, and, for Search results, devices. | Use the available dimensions to identify where pages are appearing and how exposure changes over time. The report does not by itself establish revenue or incremental conversions. |
| Web multimodal search | Google announced reporting on September 24, 2026, with global rollout starting that day. It covers searches through Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search, and Chrome’s right-click “Search this image” feature. Site owners can use the multimodal search-type filter and export data. | Google says metrics appear when a site receives traffic from these queries. No visible data alone does not prove visual search has no value for the business. |
A practical reporting routine
- Open Google Search Console and review the available performance insights for generative AI Search. Compare dates, pages, and countries; use the device breakdown where the report provides it.
- In Search Console performance reporting, apply the multimodal search-type filter to examine eligible visual-search activity, then export the data if you need to combine it with other reporting.
- Compare like with like: keep the time period, geography, and report type consistent. Separate impressions from clicks and from downstream business outcomes.
- Use analytics or sales records to assess what happened after a search visit. Search Console visibility alone cannot establish whether a change caused additional revenue or conversions.
Decide deliberately whether to appear in AI features
A June 2026 Google website-owner article described a Search Console control for whether a site appears in and helps ground responses in generative AI Search features. Google said sites opting out would not receive impressions or traffic from those features, and that the control would not act as a ranking signal outside them. The article said the control and related insights had reached all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. Check the current Search Console implementation and implications before changing a site’s setting.
What do Google’s traffic statements mean for a business?
Large platform-wide figures indicate that search behavior is changing, but they are not forecasts for an individual website. In its May 21, 2025 business advertising article, Google reported more than 5 trillion searches on Google annually. That is a Google-published aggregate, not an estimate of an advertiser’s reachable audience.
Rank #4
In the same 2025 article, Google said an experiment found more than a 10% increase in Google usage for query types that show AI Overviews in the U.S. and India. The comparison covered two cohorts from September 2024 through April 2025 and applied to the subset of queries that would show AI Overviews. It measures platform usage in that experiment, not a promised increase in visits for any business.

This is a company-reported aggregate observation. Google also noted that traffic shifts among sites and some quick-answer searches may satisfy people without another click. Neither statement guarantees stable traffic or higher-quality visits for a particular site or sector.

How is paid search changing?
AI search features also raise questions about where ads can appear. Google’s May 2025 Ads article described expanding Search and Shopping ads in AI Overviews to U.S. desktop and testing ads in AI Mode, where ads could appear below or integrated into relevant responses. It also described eligibility examples involving Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns with broad match, including AI Max for Search campaigns.
Those details describe Google’s May 2025 announcement, not a verified statement of current availability. The article does not establish which formats, countries, devices, or campaign types are available now. Before making a budget or campaign decision based on an AI placement, confirm the current Google Ads documentation and the account’s actual eligibility.
Quick Recap
A sensible strategy for businesses
- Protect the fundamentals. Keep valuable pages accessible, clear, and useful rather than rebuilding the site around speculative AI tactics.
- Make content worth citing and visiting. Give readers distinctive detail, credible explanations, and helpful visuals instead of thin pages that merely repeat common answers.
- Measure multiple stages. Use Search Console to observe exposure and clicks, then evaluate visits, leads, or sales using the business’s own analytics and records.
- Include visual discovery where it fits. Review whether products, services, locations, or expertise are naturally represented by images, and monitor multimodal reporting where data is available.
- Date platform claims. Audience totals, interface features, reporting availability, and ad placements can change; distinguish Google’s statements from independent measurement and from company-specific results.
