A search API is not a single kind of data feed. Depending on the service, it may return structured JSON, browser-oriented HTML, or a Markdown representation; it may query a commercial search engine, a provider-maintained index, or another source. To choose one responsibly, evaluate the output format, engine and result coverage, request context, pagination, error behavior, and the evidence behind reliability claims as separate questions.
What does a search API return?
The response format determines how much interpretation your application must perform. Structured output is usually easiest for software to consume, while HTML can preserve presentation details that a parser does not yet expose. Markdown sits between those approaches by keeping much of the information in a compact, text-oriented form.

Structured JSON
SerpApi’s Google Search API documentation describes JSON responses containing structured modules for organic results, local results, advertisements, knowledge graphs, direct answers, images, news, shopping, and video, among other result types. Instead of making your code inspect page markup, the response represents recognizable search-page components as fields and arrays.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat structure is useful for ranking analysis, monitoring, reporting, and downstream pipelines. You can select the modules you need, normalize records, and store fields without maintaining an HTML parser for every page variation. “Structured” does not mean universal, however: each provider defines its own field names, nesting, omissions, and normalization rules. A JSON response from one service should not be assumed to be interchangeable with another provider’s response.

Raw HTML
The same SerpApi documentation describes HTML as the raw retrieved page. HTML can help you debug a disagreement between a parsed JSON result and the page a browser would display, and it can expose features that the provider has not represented in its JSON model yet. The trade-off is engineering effort: you must parse changing markup, account for embedded data, and distinguish visible result content from navigation, consent dialogs, scripts, and other page elements.
Google’s Search Researcher Result API help page describes a browser-oriented behavior: the API accepts a URL and retrieves the HTML Google would return to a browser. It also warns that some query parameters are rejected and produce an error. This establishes a narrow point about HTML retrieval and parameter constraints; it does not establish that every Google result module, location control, or reliability characteristic is available through that API.
Markdown
SerpApi describes its Markdown output as a token-efficient presentation containing most of the same informational content as its other representations. The format can include tables, Markdown links, and YAML frontmatter. It is convenient when the next consumer is a language model, a text-search system, or a human reviewing many responses, but it is not automatically a lossless substitute for JSON. If your application needs stable identifiers, explicit result types, or precise machine validation, confirm which fields survive the conversion.

“Search coverage” is too broad to evaluate on its own. A useful specification records at least the source being queried, the result surfaces returned, the request context that can be controlled, and the pagination model.
Engine or index
First identify whether the API retrieves results from a named search engine or from an index maintained by the API company. Those are different products, even when both return a list of links. A search-engine API attempts to represent that engine’s current result page. An index API may crawl, process, and rank documents under its own rules.
SerpApi presents its Search Index as an LLM-first index rather than the Google Search API. Its documentation describes structured JSON organic results and says that the service does not provide a full HTML response. The page labels the index as currently in preview and reports an index size of 6.85 billion pages. That number is a vendor claim, the publication year is not stated, and it is not an independently audited count. It also cannot be used to infer Google-result coverage.

Result surfaces and modules
List the actual surfaces your workload requires. Common categories include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Organic web results and their ranking positions.
- Local listings and map-oriented results.
- Paid advertisements.
- Knowledge-graph panels and direct-answer modules.
- Image, news, shopping, and video results.
A provider can support one category while omitting another, or return a category only for selected engines and regions. “The API returns search results” does not tell you whether local, shopping, news, or advertising data is present. Require documentation or a representative response for each module that matters to your product.
Geography and language
Search pages change with location and language. SerpApi documents a location parameter and coordinate-based options for geographic targeting. It also cautions that proxy-country effects can remain when a location is supplied without a country parameter. In practice, record the requested location, country, language settings, and the network or proxy context used for each extraction so that two apparently identical requests can be explained later.
Do not treat a city name as proof of an exact physical viewpoint. Ask how the service resolves a named location, whether coordinates are accepted, what defaults apply when a country is omitted, and how the provider reports an invalid or ambiguous location.
Device and pagination
Desktop, tablet, and mobile layouts can produce different modules and rankings. SerpApi documents device settings for those three categories. A mobile request should therefore be tested separately rather than assumed to be a smaller desktop response.
Pagination is another independent control. The documentation describes result-offset pagination, which means your collector must preserve the offset used for every page and verify that the returned records correspond to that offset. When storing rankings, keep the requested page or offset alongside each result; otherwise later analysis can mistake a second-page record for a first-page position.

How to design a dependable extraction workflow
1. Write the workload specification
Before selecting a provider, state the exact job: engine or index, query language, countries or coordinates, device types, result modules, pages or offsets, refresh frequency, and required fields. Include whether you need raw HTML for forensic review or only normalized records. This prevents a provider’s broad feature list from hiding a missing requirement.
2. Choose the representation per use case
Use structured JSON when your system needs repeatable parsing, typed fields, and module-level filtering. Add HTML retrieval when you must inspect browser-oriented content, debug parser discrepancies, or handle features not represented in JSON. Use Markdown for compact text transfer or model-oriented workflows after checking that the information your application needs is retained.
3. Pin the request context
Set location, country, language, and device explicitly where the API supports them. Store those settings with the response. If the service uses a proxy or another network path, retain that metadata as well, because the network’s country can influence results when geographic parameters are incomplete.
4. Retrieve pages deliberately
Implement pagination as a stateful process. Record the offset requested, the number of records received, and any indication that no further page exists. Do not assume that a fixed number of results is available for every query or module. If your analysis depends on rank continuity, check for duplicates and missing positions between pages.
5. Validate the response
Validation should distinguish a successful transport from a useful extraction. Check the HTTP status and provider error fields, then verify that the expected module exists, that required fields are populated, and that the response corresponds to the requested engine, location, device, and offset. Keep the original response when possible so a later parser change can be compared with what was actually received.
6. Separate incomplete results from failures
A timeout is different from a valid response that lacks a requested module. A provider-side error is different from an upstream search-engine outage. Your retry and alerting policy should classify these cases separately; otherwise an apparently healthy request rate can conceal systematic gaps in the data.

What do the published reliability figures mean?
Reliability is meaningful only when its metric, period, scope, and calculation are defined. The available provider pages publish figures for two different services, not a controlled comparison.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Service | Published figure | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SerpApi Google Search API | 93.678% | SerpApi release-notes API uptime; the surfaced page does not state the year, measurement window, or calculation method. |
| SerpApi Search Index API | 99.984% | SerpApi release-notes API uptime; the surfaced page does not state the year, measurement window, or calculation method. The service has different coverage from the Google Search API. |
These are vendor-published numbers, not independent measurements, guarantees, or a head-to-head benchmark. The higher Search Index figure does not prove that it is more dependable for a workload requiring Google SERPs; it is a different service with a different source and response model. Because the pages do not identify a common period or operating conditions, calculating a percentage-point advantage would be misleading.
Reliability questions to ask a provider
- What exactly counts as uptime: a reachable endpoint, a non-error response, or a complete and correct result?
- What measurement window and time zone are used, and how often is the figure updated?
- Are upstream search-engine failures included or excluded?
- How are timeouts, rate limits, malformed responses, and partial modules classified?
- What are the latency percentiles, not just the average?
- Is there an incident history with duration and affected services?
For production systems, measure your own workload as well. Track request success, complete-result rate, latency distribution, retries, and module-level omissions by engine, geography, and device. A provider-wide uptime number cannot reveal whether your particular locations or result surfaces are failing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing search APIs on the same workload
Run an apples-to-apples evaluation instead of comparing marketing labels. Use the same query set, locations, languages, devices, page depth, request rate, and collection window for each candidate. Score both data usefulness and operational behavior.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Representation | Is the output structured JSON, raw HTML, Markdown, or another documented format? Are fields stable and versioned? |
| Engine or index | Which search engine or provider-maintained index supplies the data? Is the product in preview? |
| Result coverage | Which of organic, local, ads, knowledge graph, direct answers, images, news, shopping, and video modules are returned? |
| Context controls | Can you set geography, coordinates, country, language, and desktop, tablet, or mobile device independently? |
| Pagination | How are offsets or pages requested, and can you verify continuity and duplicates? |
| Errors and completeness | How are rate limits, timeouts, upstream failures, invalid parameters, and partial responses represented? |
| Reliability evidence | Is uptime defined, dated, and accompanied by incidents and latency data? |
| Data terms | What retention, privacy, rate, and plan terms apply to your workload, and where are they documented? |
The captured documentation does not establish current terms for competing providers, an independent uptime benchmark, or a common test result. Verify those items directly before committing to a service.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
The response is valid but a module is missing
Confirm that the module is supported for the selected engine, country, language, device, and output format. A JSON parser may omit a feature that is visible in HTML, while a service-maintained index may never offer that engine-specific module. Preserve the raw response and compare it with the provider’s documented schema before changing your parser.
Best Value
Results differ between supposedly identical requests
Check every context variable, including country, coordinates, language, device, pagination offset, and proxy location. Also verify that you did not switch between an engine API and a provider-maintained index. Store a canonical request record so differences can be reproduced.
A parameter causes an error
Read the endpoint’s parameter rules rather than assuming that browser query parameters are accepted. Google’s Researcher Result API documentation explicitly notes that some query parameters are rejected. Remove unsupported parameters, validate values before sending, and classify the response as a parameter error rather than an outage.
Pages contain duplicates or ranking gaps
Persist the requested offset and returned positions, then detect repeated URLs and missing ranks. If the provider documents a different pagination mechanism for a module, follow that module-specific behavior instead of applying an organic-results assumption.
Uptime looks high but your data is incomplete
Monitor completeness separately from endpoint availability. A request can succeed while omitting a local pack, advertisement, or other module. Alert on missing required fields and module counts, not only on transport errors.
What to document before production
- The exact engine or index and the API version or preview status.
- Every requested result module and the fallback when it is unavailable.
- Output format, schema version, and raw-response retention policy.
- Location, country, language, coordinates, device, and pagination settings.
- Retry limits, timeout values, rate-limit handling, and idempotency behavior.
- Metrics for success, completeness, latency, duplicates, and upstream errors.
- Current privacy, retention, pricing, and rate terms checked against the provider’s documentation.
This record turns an API choice into an auditable data pipeline. It also makes a future provider change measurable: you can test whether the replacement supplies the same engine, surfaces, context, and completeness rather than comparing names alone.
