Why moving to a new Samsung phone can be painless
Samsung’s ecosystem is designed for quick setup. Smart Switch is the centerpiece: it can migrate contacts, messages, photos, apps (depending on support), and device settings with minimal friction.
Even if you’re switching models or Android versions, you can usually complete the move as long as you prepare the old phone and keep both devices powered and connected during the transfer.

What you can (and can’t) transfer
Most content transfers well, but not everything behaves the same way across phones, backups, and accounts. Here’s a practical breakdown.
| Data type | Best method | Common limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts | Smart Switch / Samsung Cloud / Google backup | Some duplicates if multiple sync sources are enabled |
| Photos & videos | Smart Switch / Samsung Cloud / Google Photos | Heavy libraries may take time; quality may vary by service |
| SMS/MMS | Smart Switch (often best) | Not all providers and backup paths behave identically |
| App data | Smart Switch | Some apps only restore minimal state or require in-app sign-in |
| Device settings | Smart Switch | Wi‑Fi passwords and system toggles are model/OS dependent |
| Chat apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.) | In-app migration tools | Each app has its own backup/restore workflow |
Prerequisites before you start
Before moving anything, set yourself up for a smooth transfer. Two minutes of prep can save hours of troubleshooting.
- Charge both phones to at least 50% (higher is better). Keep them plugged in during transfer if possible.
- Update software on the old phone. On Samsung devices, go to Settings > Software update and install pending updates.
- Connect to a stable network for wireless transfers (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi‑Fi is fine, but avoid public hotspots).
- Know your lock type (PIN/pattern/biometrics). You may be asked to confirm security steps during restore.
- Use the correct Google/Samsung accounts on the new phone. Plan to sign in to both during or after setup.
- Keep your SIM/eSIM strategy ready: if you’re changing carriers or moving to eSIM, confirm the process with your provider.
If you have a lot of data (for example, thousands of photos), also plan time. Wireless migrations can take 30–90 minutes or longer depending on library size and network speed.
Method 1: Samsung Smart Switch (fastest and most complete)
Samsung Smart Switch is the default choice because it’s built for device-to-device migration. It can transfer contacts, messages, photos, and more without you manually sorting files.
When to use Smart Switch
Use Smart Switch when:
- You want the highest chance of moving SMS/MMS and settings.
- You’re switching between Samsung models (e.g., Galaxy A-series to Galaxy S-series).
- You want a guided restore during initial setup on the new phone.
Choose a transfer method
Smart Switch supports wireless, wired, and PC-based transfers. Pick the option that matches your cables, Wi‑Fi quality, and time.
Wireless transfer (Wi‑Fi)
- On the new Samsung phone, start setup and choose Smart Switch (or open Smart Switch from the app drawer).
- On the old phone, open Smart Switch as well.
- On both phones, select Wireless (or the equivalent wording).
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions. You may need to confirm a code or permission prompt.
- Select what you want to transfer if prompted (or allow the default “select all”).
- Keep both phones close to each other and don’t lock the transfer process.
Wireless is convenient, but it can be slow if your Wi‑Fi is unstable or your photo/video library is large.

USB transfer (USB‑C to USB‑C or USB‑C to adapter)
- Install/open Smart Switch on both phones.
- On the new phone, select USB cable as the transfer type.
- Connect phones using a compatible USB cable. Most modern Samsung phones support USB‑C data transfer; older models may require a specific adapter.
- On the old phone, approve any prompts (for example, permissions or device connection confirmation).
- Select data categories to transfer (if offered) and start.
- Leave phones connected until Smart Switch shows completion.
USB transfer is often the most reliable if you have the right cable and you don’t want network-related issues.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTransfer using a computer (Windows/macOS)
- On your computer, install Smart Switch for PC (for Windows, download from Samsung’s support page; for macOS you’ll typically use the Samsung Smart Switch PC app equivalent).
- Connect the old phone to the computer via USB.
- In Smart Switch on the computer, choose Backup (wording may vary).
- Disconnect the old phone and connect the new phone.
- Choose Restore and select the backup you created.
- Complete the restore, then verify key data on the new phone.
This option helps when your Wi‑Fi is weak or when you want an extra “intermediate step” before restoring to the new device.
Method 2: Samsung Cloud + restore
If your old phone is already using Samsung Cloud, this method can restore data—especially contacts, photos (depending on settings), and some app-related data.
- On the old phone, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud.
- Check Sync or Backup status. Download or upload pending items if prompted.
- Confirm you’re signed into the same Samsung account you’ll use on the new phone.
- On the new phone, sign in to Samsung account during setup or in Settings > Accounts and backup.
- In Samsung Cloud, choose Restore data and select the categories you need.
Samsung Cloud can be slower than USB for large photo libraries, but it’s a strong option if you’re staying signed in and your upload completes.
Method 3: Google backup and restore (contacts, photos, apps)
Google backup is great for contacts and many app settings, and it pairs well with Google Photos for media. It’s also useful if you’re switching between Samsung models and want account-based continuity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On the old phone, open Settings > Accounts and backup.
- Select Backup and restore (or Samsung Cloud and Google backup depending on model).
- Choose Back up my data and ensure it’s turned on.
- Verify Google account is correct under Accounts.
- Optionally confirm Google Photos is enabled: open Google Photos and check backup status.
- During setup on the new phone, sign in to the same Google account.
- When prompted, enable restore from the backup. Let the phone finish downloading apps and settings.
Google Photos may restore from the cloud while Smart Switch transfers locally—so you can end up with duplicates if both are active without understanding the merge behavior.

Method 4: SD card transfer (media and some files)
Not every Samsung phone supports SD card use, and not every data category can be restored from SD. But for photos, videos, and downloadable files, it’s a practical fallback.
- Insert the SD card into the old phone (if supported).
- Open My Files (or Files), then copy DCIM and Pictures folders (or let your gallery “move” content).
- Safely eject the SD card: Settings > Battery and device care or storage menu > Unmount.
- Insert the SD card into the new phone.
- Open My Files, locate the copied folders, and move or copy them into the new phone’s internal storage as needed.
If your phone uses SD for Adoptable Storage or encryption, follow the phone’s prompts carefully to avoid unreadable media.
Method 5: Manual file transfer with a computer
This method is “boring,” but it works when you want control. Use it for media, documents, and downloads—especially if Smart Switch is unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Connect the old Samsung phone to your computer via USB.
- On the phone, choose the connection mode such as File transfer (MTP).
- Copy folders like DCIM (photos/videos) and Pictures to a folder on your computer.
- Disconnect the old phone.
- Connect the new Samsung phone, enable File transfer, and copy the folders into the appropriate location (often DCIM or Pictures).
- Safely eject and then verify media appears in Gallery.
If photos don’t show up immediately, restart the Gallery app or reboot once; media indexing can take a few minutes.
Transferring specific data types reliably
Different data categories respond differently to backups and restores. The sections below help you avoid surprises.
Contacts and call history
Contacts usually transfer cleanly with Smart Switch and Google/Samsung backups. If you use both services, duplicates can appear.

- For best results, make sure only one source is the “master” during migration (either Google Contacts or Samsung Cloud/Smart Switch results).
- After restore, open Contacts and use any Merge or Fix duplicates option.
Photos and videos
Photos often exist in multiple places after migration: the cloud, internal storage, SD card, and Smart Switch imports. Decide which one you want to be authoritative.
Recommended Free Tools
- If you use Google Photos, check whether backup is “on” and whether the new phone is signed in to the same Google account.
- For local transfers, verify in Gallery and check the album structure if you care about organization.
Messages (SMS/MMS) and attachments
SMS/MMS migration is one area where Smart Switch usually wins. After transfer, confirm threads and media attachments (MMS images) are present.
- If messages don’t appear, wait a few minutes—some restores take time to index.
- If you rely heavily on SMS backups, test with one important conversation before declaring success.
WhatsApp and other chat apps
Chat apps typically require in-app migration. Samsung Smart Switch may reinstall apps, but it won’t reliably move encrypted message databases the way the app’s own backup does.
- For WhatsApp, use the in-app backup/restore process (Google Drive backup or local backup depending on settings and Android version).
- For iMessage-style services: not applicable on Samsung-to-Samsung, but for any app, always use the app’s “restore” option rather than expecting Smart Switch to copy everything.
Apps, app data, and device settings
Smart Switch can restore a lot of app-related content, but app data rules vary by developer. After migration, open each critical app and sign in again if required.
- Expect some apps to restore only basics (for example, login state may require re-authentication).
- Check system settings like Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth pairing, and notification permissions.
Troubleshooting when the transfer fails
If something doesn’t work, don’t panic. Most issues have repeatable fixes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Smart Switch can’t connect
- Wireless pairing fails: turn both screens off then on, keep phones close, and switch networks off/on (Wi‑Fi settings) on the old phone.
- USB isn’t detected: try a different compatible cable or port. If you’re using a USB hub or adapter, remove it and connect directly.
- Permission prompts: confirm you accepted any connection prompts on both devices.
Transfer stalls or is stuck at a percentage
- Leave phones unlocked and connected for at least 20–30 minutes. Large photo/video transfers can pause briefly.
- If you see no progress for 30 minutes, cancel and retry with USB rather than wireless.
- Temporarily disable battery saver modes on both phones.
Some apps or app data don’t appear
- Apps may reinstall, but app data can require in-app restore (common with banking, messaging, and authenticator apps).
- Verify the new phone is signed into the same Google account. Then reinstall missing apps from Play Store.
- For authenticator apps, use the provider’s migration steps (for example, QR transfer) instead of relying on backups.
Photos look duplicated or missing
- Dupes often happen when Smart Switch imports local photos while Google Photos is also syncing the same library.
- Missing photos may be in a different folder (for example,
/DCIM/Cameravs edited album folders). Use Gallery search to locate them. - Check both internal storage and SD card for the copied DCIM structure.
SIM/eSIM or network issues after setup
- If calls or data don’t work, confirm APN settings and that the correct SIM is active under Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
- If you changed carriers, you may need a carrier profile update. Restart after applying changes.
Common mistakes that cause data loss or confusion
- Turning off the old phone mid-transfer. Smart Switch needs a stable source.
- Starting the migration, then signing out of accounts. Keep the old phone signed in until everything completes.
- Ignoring encryption prompts. If your phone asks to decrypt or unlock storage, do it—otherwise the new phone may not be able to read the media.
- Assuming app data always transfers. Many apps rely on their own backups.
- Skipping verification. Take a quick inventory: contacts, one message thread, camera roll, and 3–5 important apps.
Best practices for a smooth migration
- Use Smart Switch as the primary method if both phones are Samsung and you want a complete experience.
- Prefer USB when you have a large library or you’re worried about Wi‑Fi reliability.
- Do backups before you start if your old phone is older or you suspect instability. A Google backup or Samsung Cloud backup provides a safety net.
- Keep the old phone for a few days after the move. If you later discover something missing, you’ll have the source ready.
FAQs
Will Smart Switch transfer my WhatsApp messages to the new Samsung phone?
Smart Switch may reinstall WhatsApp, but message transfer is typically handled by WhatsApp’s own backup/restore process (usually Google Drive for Android). Use WhatsApp’s migration flow inside the app for the most reliable results.

Do I need both phones to be updated?
It helps. At minimum, update the old phone so Smart Switch can read its data cleanly. The new phone should also have pending system updates installed if possible before you restore.
What if my new phone has less storage than my old phone?
Smart Switch and backups can fail or partially complete when storage is too tight. Free up space on the new phone by removing large files you don’t need, then retry. For media-heavy moves, consider transferring photos/videos first and restoring apps afterward.
Can I move data if my old phone is damaged?
If the screen works enough to approve prompts and keep the phone unlocked, Smart Switch can still work. If the phone is unstable or won’t power reliably, a computer-based backup method may be safer, but you’ll need enough device functionality to connect and unlock.
Will I lose my old phone data after transferring?
No. Transfers copy data to the new device. Just don’t factory reset the old phone until you’ve verified everything on the new phone.
Bottom Line
If you want the most dependable migration from one Samsung phone to another, use Samsung Smart Switch—wireless for convenience, USB for reliability, or a computer as a backup path. Pair that with Google or Samsung account restore for anything that depends on cloud sync.
After the transfer, verify the essentials (contacts, photos, one or two message threads, and your key apps). With a quick check and a little prep, your new Samsung phone should feel like home with minimal downtime.
