TechRadar Pro reported on October 6, 2026, that Amazon was selling Seagate’s 24TB Expansion Desktop for $679.99—$150 below its stated previous price—with Best Buy reportedly matching. Those are dated deal observations, not confirmed live prices; check the checkout price and availability before buying. The desktop drive includes a power adapter and USB cable, and Seagate lists Rescue Data Recovery Services, though the service is not available in every country.
What the October Prime Day deal included
TechRadar Pro reported the Amazon price at $679.99 on October 6, 2026, describing it as $150 off and about $0.03 per GB. It also reported the same price at Best Buy. The publication called it the lowest current price for a new 24TB HDD at the time and compared it with a Seagate SkyHawk AI 24TB listed at $1,029. These are the deal report’s market observations from that date, not current price guarantees. Verify the retailer’s checkout total and stock before making a decision. TechRadar Pro’s deal report

What you get—and whether it suits your setup
The Expansion Desktop is an external, desk-oriented hard drive, not a pocketable portable drive. Seagate’s product page describes a plug-and-play setup: connect the included power adapter and USB cable, then save files by drag and drop. It specifies USB 3.0 transfers and compatibility with most Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS systems. As with any compatibility claim phrased as “most,” check your own device and connection before purchase. Seagate Expansion Desktop product page

Seagate’s Expansion Desktop FAQ puts the distinction this way: “The difference between an external hard drive and an expansion hard drive is in their design and user experience.” If you plan to use the drive with Time Machine on a Mac, Seagate says reformatting may be necessary. Reformatting erases existing contents, so do it before storing files and follow the setup guidance for your Mac. Seagate Expansion Desktop FAQ and product information

Why a 24TB drive may show less capacity
Seagate markets capacity in decimal units: one terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Some operating systems display capacity using binary units based on powers of 1,024, which results in a smaller displayed figure. Available capacity can also vary with the operating environment. A lower system-reported number than “24TB” does not, by itself, mean the drive is defective. Seagate capacity information
Data recovery: included, but not a promise of recovery
Seagate lists Rescue Data Recovery Services for the Expansion Desktop, and TechRadar Pro described the offer as including the service for the first year. Seagate explicitly notes that Rescue is unavailable in some countries. The cited information does not establish universal eligibility, claim limits, or a guaranteed recovery outcome, so check the terms for your location and purchase before relying on it. Shucking and warranty: verify the exact model first
TechRadar Pro says the drive can be removed from its enclosure, but warns that opening it voids the warranty entirely. Seagate’s cited product and support pages present this as an external desktop drive and do not endorse shucking. The report speculates that the disk inside may be a Barracuda or IronWolf Pro; that is not a guaranteed internal model or type from Seagate. If you are considering opening the enclosure, first confirm the warranty terms for the exact SKU and region. TechRadar Pro deal report

There is an identifier mismatch worth taking seriously: Seagate’s product page identifies the 24TB configuration as STKP24000400, while the manufacturer support listing cited for warranty information names STNP24000400 and states a one-year limited warranty. Those are different identifiers, so the support listing should not be treated as definitive warranty advice for STKP24000400. Check the label on the unit and confirm its regional terms with Seagate. Use it as one backup copy, not your whole backup plan
A 24TB desktop drive can hold a large local backup, but a single drive is still one copy in one place. TechRadar Pro summarizes the 3-2-1 rule as three copies of data, across at least two media types, with one copy offsite. A separate offsite copy—such as cloud backup or another suitable location—can help protect against loss affecting both your computer and the drive. Choose a method that fits your data, recovery needs, and budget. TechRadar Pro deal report

What to check before buying
- Confirm that the live checkout price still makes sense; the $679.99 offer and $150 reduction were reported on October 6, 2026, not verified as ongoing.
- Make sure a powered desktop drive fits your setup; it needs the included power adapter rather than being a pocketable, bus-powered portable drive.
- Check the exact SKU, local limited-warranty terms, and Rescue eligibility for your country before purchase or opening the enclosure.
- Allow for the difference between advertised decimal capacity and the figure your operating system may report.
- If using Time Machine, check whether your Mac requires the drive to be reformatted before saving files.
- Plan another copy, preferably offsite, for data you cannot afford to lose.
