Seagate has reportedly topped Toshiba’s offer for TDK’s hard-drive magnetic-head business, according to The Inference, accessed October 9, 2026. The report concerns a component supplier—not a sale of Toshiba’s hard-drive business. If Seagate acquired the unit, the change could affect Toshiba’s access to an independent source of heads, but the reported bid is not confirmation of a completed deal or of Toshiba leaving the HDD market.
What is the reported bidding contest about?
The reported contest is for TDK’s magnetic-head business. The Inference says Seagate has reportedly topped Toshiba’s offer; the available reporting does not establish that TDK has accepted an offer, that a transaction has closed, or what the price would be. No primary company announcement or regulatory filing confirming the bid or its outcome is established by the cited coverage.

That distinction matters: Toshiba is described as a bidder for a component business, not as the subject of a sale. The report does not say Toshiba has decided to sell or shut down its HDD operation.
Why do magnetic heads matter to hard drives?
A hard disk drive stores data on spinning magnetic media. Its magnetic heads read information from the media and write new information to it. The heads are therefore a key part inside a drive, even though consumers generally encounter them only as part of a finished internal or external HDD.

ETF.net reports that TDK describes itself as the only independent maker of HDD heads serving all three drive producers: Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital. The same account attributes to TDK an estimate that it held 15% to 20% of the HDD-head market in August; the year and original TDK publication are not stated in the cited passage. That figure is an attributed estimate of head-market share, not a share of hard-drive sales, and it is not independently verified here.
Could Seagate’s reported bid put Toshiba at a disadvantage?
Potentially, but the available facts do not establish how much Toshiba depends on TDK or whether an acquisition would change supply arrangements. If Seagate owned a supplier that currently serves all three manufacturers, questions would arise about continued access, commercial terms, and whether Toshiba and Western Digital could obtain heads from other sources. Those are possible strategic concerns, not demonstrated effects of this reported contest.

Historical evidence explains why multiple suppliers can matter. In a hard-drive merger proceeding, the European Commission recorded customers citing security of supply and the ability to use competing suppliers against one another to obtain competitive prices as reasons for multisourcing. That is historical context from the proceeding, not a new survey of current buyers or proof of what would happen in this case.

Does this mean Toshiba could disappear as an HDD maker?
No such outcome is established. The headline’s concern is that Toshiba might face a disadvantage if a key independent supplier came under a competitor’s ownership. The cited report does not show that Toshiba plans to exit HDD manufacturing, that it would lose access to heads, or that another supplier could not serve it. A possible shift in supplier ownership is not the same as the elimination of a drive maker.

What remains unknown?
- Whether TDK has accepted an offer or a sale process is under way.
- The bid value, final terms, and any conditions attached to a transaction.
- Whether regulators would review or approve a deal.
- How dependent each drive maker is on TDK’s head business, and what alternative supply would be available.
- Whether the reported contest would affect HDD production, consumer availability, or prices.
Until those points are clarified by company statements or filings, the report is best understood as a developing corporate story rather than evidence of an imminent Toshiba exit or a consumer HDD shortage.
