The available interface specifications do not establish that either mechanical drive is faster in real use.
What the comparison covers
“Seagate One Touch” includes distinct products, including a portable hard drive, a desktop Hub, and an Ultra Touch SSD. This comparison is about the One Touch portable HDD, not the Hub or SSD. My Passport also covers multiple generations and model codes. Check the exact model and capacity on the regional product listing before buying.

| What to compare | Seagate One Touch Portable HDD | WD My Passport | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity | The cited datasheet lists 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB, and 5 TB variants; Seagate’s support page identifies the 5 TB model as STKC5000601. Seagate overview; Seagate support; Seagate datasheet | WD’s cited support catalog lists 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB, and 4 TB configurations for its referenced family. WD support catalog | Capacity availability depends on generation and market. Compare the same capacity and verify the exact SKU. |
| Connection and cable | The manual describes a Micro-B-to-USB-A cable. A USB-C host needs a port supporting USB 3.0 or higher; a Micro-B-to-USB-C cable is not included. Seagate manual | WD describes a Micro-B connector and USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0 support for the referenced models. WD My Passport FAQ | Check the cable supplied with the exact box and whether you need an adapter for your computer. |
| Speed information | Seagate identifies USB 3.0 on the cited HDD family; no comparable real-world result is provided. Seagate overview | WD gives an interface transfer-rate ceiling of up to 5 Gb/s for the referenced models. WD My Passport FAQ | These are interface specifications, not proof that one drive copies files faster. No controlled head-to-head test for the exact models is established here. |
| Mac compatibility and format | Seagate’s datasheet notes that reformatting may be required for Mac use. Seagate datasheet | WD says the referenced models are NTFS-formatted out of the box and need reformatting for macOS. WD My Passport FAQ | Choose a file system compatible with your computers and intended workflow. Reformatting erases existing data, so check compatibility and back up files before doing it. |
| Backup and utilities | Seagate advertises customizable backup through Toolkit, but feature availability varies by drive and operating system. Seagate overview; Seagate Toolkit support | WD lists Drive Utilities for supported diagnostics and management. WD software support | Check that the software supports your specific drive and operating system, then compare its workflow with the backup method you already use. |
| Password protection and encryption | The cited standard One Touch HDD overview lists password encryption as unavailable. Seagate also sells a separate password-protected One Touch line, so confirm the SKU rather than relying on the family name. Seagate overview | WD documents 256-bit AES hardware encryption for the referenced My Passport family and describes password features through WD Security. WD My Passport FAQ; WD software support | If protecting stored data is important, verify encryption and password support for the exact model and confirm that the required software works on your system. Hardware encryption and password protection are related but not interchangeable claims; consult WD’s encryption compatibility matrix. |
| Warranty | Seagate lists a two-year limited warranty for the cited STKC5000601 5 TB model. Seagate support | WD’s warranty table assigns different terms to My Passport model-code groups, including two-year and three-year groups. WD warranty policy | Check the model code and warranty terms for the region where you will buy; do not assume coverage is identical across a family. |
| Price and value | Current price and stock: not established. | Current price and stock: not established. | Compare same-capacity listings at the time of purchase, with generation and regional warranty reasonably matched. Price per TB is useful only when those details are comparable. |
Which one should you buy?
Choose WD My Passport if encryption is a priority
The cited My Passport family has explicit manufacturer documentation for 256-bit AES hardware encryption and WD Security password features. That makes it the more clearly documented choice between these cited configurations for a buyer who needs those protections. Check the exact model and software compatibility before relying on them.

For ordinary storage or transfers, decide by exact SKU and price
If you primarily need a portable drive for extra storage or moving files, neither cited specification set establishes a general winner. Match capacity, connector and cable, file-system needs, warranty, and current same-capacity price. Do not pay extra based only on a USB version or transfer-rate ceiling.

Check these details before purchase
- Model and capacity: Write down the complete model code and capacity; product families include different generations and variants.
- Computer and cable: Confirm the drive’s Micro-B connector, included cable, and whether your USB-C computer needs a compatible port or adapter.
- File-system plan: Check whether the out-of-box format works with your computers. Reformat only after backing up the drive, because formatting erases its contents.
- Security and software: Confirm that the specific model supports the encryption, password, or backup features you intend to use, and that the relevant software supports your OS.
- Warranty and price: Compare local coverage and same-capacity prices for the exact models, not just the brand names.
