Tom’s Hardware reported on October 6, 2026, that Newegg was selling the Seagate Expansion Desktop 16TB for $449.99, a reported $100 off its stated $549.99 price. That works out to about $0.02 per decimal gigabyte. The offer is time-sensitive: check Tom’s Hardware’s deal report and the Newegg listing for the current price and stock before buying.
Is the 16TB Seagate Expansion Desktop a good deal?
At the reported $449.99 price, this is a compelling capacity-per-dollar offer if you need a large desktop drive for backups or archives and are comfortable with a USB-connected hard drive. The deal report’s approximately $0.02 per GB calculation uses the reported price; it is not a promise that the offer is still available. Tom’s Hardware also said other new 16TB drives it found cost more at the time, a dated comparison rather than a general market ranking.

The report does not establish measured performance for the specific offer unit. Seagate does not specify the internal drive speed in the cited product materials, so this price alone is not a reason to choose it for a workload that depends on known throughput or latency.
What you are buying
This is a desktop external hard drive with a 16TB capacity and USB 3.0 connectivity, not a portable bus-powered drive. Seagate’s data sheet for the Americas model STKP16000400 lists an included USB cable, an 18W power adapter, and a one-year limited warranty. Seagate lists multiple 16TB model numbers, so confirm the exact SKU and regional product details on the listing and the Seagate Expansion Desktop data sheet.
#1 Best Overall
- Easy-to-use desktop hard drive—simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable
- Fast file transfers with USB 3.0
- Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
- Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (Reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Seagate defines capacity using decimal units. Your operating system may show less usable space than 16TB because some capacity is used for formatting and other functions, and operating systems may calculate storage using a different measurement standard.
What “shuckable” means—and the warranty trade-off
“Shucking” means opening the external enclosure and removing the internal drive to install it elsewhere, such as in a desktop computer or a storage enclosure. Tom’s Hardware reports that removing the Expansion Desktop’s enclosure voids the warranty. Keep the enclosure intact if you want to retain the cited one-year limited warranty for the Americas model.
Rank #2
- Easy-to-use desktop hard drive—simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable
- Fast file transfers with USB 3.3
- Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
- Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (Reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
- Enjoy peace of mind with the included limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services
The internal drive is not guaranteed to be a particular model. Tom’s Hardware says user reports mention both Barracuda and IronWolf Pro drives, but the drive can vary. Buy it for the external 16TB capacity and price, not on the assumption that it contains a specific internal model or that shucking will deliver a particular performance level.

Seagate describes setup as connecting the included power supply and USB cable. Its data sheet lists Windows 10 or later and Mac OS X 10.12 or later, subject to hardware and operating-system compatibility. An available USB 3.0 port is required to achieve USB 3.0 transfer speeds; the drive may connect through compatible USB configurations at other speeds.
