If the Screenshotlayer API returns 403, do not assume the access key is invalid or the account has run out of quota. Screenshotlayer’s published API error list does not define a 403 cause. First determine whether the response is a structured Screenshotlayer error or a bare denial from a proxy, firewall, CDN, or other intermediary; then check the request, credentials, and account state.
First identify what returned the 403
Screenshotlayer documents API errors as JSON with success: false and an error object containing a numeric code, a type, and plain-text info. That difference matters: a structured body with a documented error code gives you a specific lead, while a bare 403 does not establish which layer rejected the request. A response branded by a proxy, CDN, firewall, hosting platform, or gateway may point to an intermediary, but that is a diagnostic inference—not documented Screenshotlayer behavior.
- Record the HTTP status, response headers, response body, and request time in UTC. Save any request or trace ID the response includes.
- Check whether the body follows Screenshotlayer’s documented JSON error format. Compare its
code,type, andinfowith the API documentation. - Redact the access key, any secret, and sensitive parts of the target URL before sharing logs or asking for help.
Check the endpoint and required parameters
Screenshot requests use the /api/capture endpoint and require an access_key and a target url. The target URL must include its protocol, such as https://. Use the endpoint and transport supported by your account and the current vendor documentation; older examples may show HTTP even though the documentation describes HTTPS as a paid-plan feature. Check for common request-construction problems before changing credentials:
- The request reaches Screenshotlayer’s capture endpoint, not a stale or misspelled URL.
- The target URL is complete and correctly URL-encoded, including its protocol.
- The query contains the intended
access_keyandurl, without truncation or unexpected duplicate parameters. - The application’s environment variable or secret store does not still point to an old key or an unintended environment.
- Credentials are not being exposed in public logs, shared screenshots, issue trackers, analytics, or support posts.
Verify the access key safely
For a structured error that identifies an invalid key, follow the returned info and check the credential. The API specification gives invalid-key error code 104 and type invalid_access_key as an example. - Retrieve the key from the Account Dashboard. Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says registered users can view and reset it there. Screenshotlayer FAQ
- If the key may have been rotated, copied incorrectly, or exposed, reset it in the dashboard and update the application’s secret store.
- Make one controlled request with the updated key. Do not put a live credential in a browser address bar or send it to a third-party request-testing service.

Check subscription, usage, and HTTPS entitlement
A valid-looking key does not establish that the account has access to every feature or is free of an account-level restriction. Check the Account Dashboard for the active subscription, allowance, usage notices, and restrictions.

Published materials describe usage differently: the API specification lists a usage_limit_reached error, while the current pricing page describes a free plan with 100 monthly snapshots, larger paid allowances, and overage fees after the account reaches 100% of its monthly allowance. These statements do not mean every account stops at the same threshold or that an exhausted allowance must produce HTTP 403. The API specification describes HTTPS as a paid-customer feature, and the pricing page says paid subscriptions include 256-bit HTTPS encryption. If HTTPS is available on your plan, use it to protect credentials in transit. Confirm the current entitlement in your account rather than relying on an older HTTP example. Separate an account problem from a network-path problem
If the response remains a bare 403 after the endpoint, parameters, key, and account state check out, inspect how the request travels from your application to the API. If permitted, compare the same sanitized request from the application host and a controlled alternate network. A difference between those results can help narrow the investigation to outbound proxy, firewall, DNS, gateway, or hosting-provider controls. This comparison is a practical diagnostic inference, not a Screenshotlayer-prescribed procedure.
- Do not test with another person’s account or disclose your key to a third party.
- Avoid repeated retry loops. Make a small number of controlled checks and preserve each response and timestamp; the terms allow usage limits and throttling in specified circumstances. Screenshotlayer terms
- If both authorized paths return the same result, retain the evidence for support rather than assuming the denial’s source.
