ScreenshotAPI.net Rate Limits: How to Handle 429 Errors

ScreenshotAPI.net maps HTTP 429 to exceeding a plan’s requests-per-minute cap. Learn how to pace retries and distinguish it from monthly quota exhaustion, which is documented as HTTP 403.

A ScreenshotAPI.net HTTP 429 means your requests have exceeded the requests-per-minute (RPM) allowance for your subscription plan. Slow or queue requests, then retry after a pause; if the response includes Retry-After, wait for the interval it specifies. First check the HTTP status and your account usage: ScreenshotAPI.net documents monthly quota exhaustion as HTTP 403, even though it uses the same screenshots_limit_reached error label.

What a ScreenshotAPI.net 429 means

ScreenshotAPI.net’s Errors documentation maps screenshots_limit_reached with HTTP 429 to exceeding the account’s permitted requests per minute. Its Help page gives a plan-dependent range of 20 to 80 requests per minute, but does not provide a complete plan-by-plan mapping. Check the limit for your own subscription rather than treating the top of that range as a universal allowance. ScreenshotAPI.net Errors documentation · ScreenshotAPI.net Help

HTTP 429 is the standard status for too many requests within a period. RFC 6585 says a response may include a Retry-After header, but the header is optional under the standard, and ScreenshotAPI.net’s reviewed documentation does not establish that it always sends one. RFC 6585, section 4

Distinguish a rate limit from a monthly quota

Do not diagnose the problem from the error label alone. ScreenshotAPI.net’s Help page uses screenshots_limit_reached for both the RPM 429 and monthly quota exhaustion, which it identifies as HTTP 403.

Response Documented meaning What to check
HTTP 429 with screenshots_limit_reached Requests-per-minute allowance exceeded. Current request pace, concurrency and the RPM limit for your plan.
HTTP 403 with screenshots_limit_reached Monthly screenshot quota exhausted. Account usage and plan allowance; waiting briefly will not replenish the monthly quota.

ScreenshotAPI.net says failed screenshot attempts do not count toward plan usage and that cached screenshots count only when they are unique and fresh. Those are usage-accounting rules; they do not establish that failed attempts are exempt from the RPM limit. The Help page also says it emails usage notifications at 80%, 90% and 100% of the monthly quota. ScreenshotAPI.net Help

Recover from a 429 without making the burst worse

  1. Read the HTTP status and response details. Confirm that the response is 429 and inspect the provider’s error information. Do not treat every screenshots_limit_reached response as a rate-limit event.
  2. Reduce the request rate. Lower parallelism, pace requests or put work in a queue so a burst does not repeatedly exceed the plan’s RPM cap. This is an operational response to the documented limit, not a provider-published algorithm.
  3. Honor Retry-After if present. Wait for the supplied interval before retrying. If it is absent, pause rather than retrying immediately; use a bounded backoff with jitter to avoid synchronized retries. ScreenshotAPI.net does not publish a specific retry schedule in the cited documentation, so there is no documented provider-specific delay to apply.
  4. Check account usage if the response is 403. Monthly quota exhaustion requires reviewing usage and plan details, not repeatedly retrying the same request.
  5. Compare legitimate peak demand with the plan cap. If your normal workload needs more requests per minute, check the current account-specific plan details or contact the provider before setting a higher production rate. ScreenshotAPI.net’s Terms say usage depends on the subscription plan and require customers to detect and handle returned errors; they also reserve the right to limit or throttle calls for malicious activity or technical errors. Prevent repeat 429s in a capture pipeline

Shape traffic at the point requests are created

Use a queue or client-side rate limiter to smooth bursts, and cap concurrent workers. When a 429 occurs, slow the producer as well as the current worker; otherwise queued retries can create another burst as soon as the pause ends. Set the sustained rate below the limit confirmed for your plan, leaving headroom for traffic spikes and other callers using the same account.

Make retries controlled and observable

Retry only after the wait interval has elapsed, and bound the number of attempts so persistent errors do not create an endless loop. Record response status, error body, attempt number and wait time. Monitor those alongside monthly usage: RPM throttling and monthly quota exhaustion require different fixes.

These are client-side reliability practices, not ScreenshotAPI.net guarantees. The provider’s cited pages do not specify a guaranteed rate-limit header, a numeric backoff schedule or a complete tier-by-tier RPM table.

Troubleshooting common cases

Symptom Likely explanation Response
Repeated HTTP 429 during a batch The request burst or ongoing rate exceeds the account’s RPM cap. Reduce parallel requests, queue the batch and pace retries. Confirm the account’s plan-specific limit.
Retry-After is missing The header is not mandatory under RFC 6585, and ScreenshotAPI.net does not document that it always sends it. Pause before retrying; use bounded backoff with jitter rather than immediate repeat calls.
screenshots_limit_reached appears with HTTP 403 The Help page associates 403 with monthly quota exhaustion. Review account usage and plan allowance instead of treating it as a short-window RPM issue.
A failed capture did not use monthly quota, but requests still receive 429 Usage accounting and request-rate limiting are separate concerns; the Help page does not say failed attempts are exempt from RPM limits. Keep controlling request frequency even when a capture fails.
429s persist at a seemingly modest rate The actual plan allowance may be below the assumed rate, or other traffic may be using the account. Verify the account’s plan and total request pattern; the published 20–80 RPM range is not a plan-by-plan table.
