Screenshot Plugins for Microsoft Edge: Built-In Capture, Extensions, and Alternatives

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Edge already includes a Screenshot tool for capturing a selected area or an entire long webpage, adding markup, and then copying or saving the result. Press Ctrl+Shift+S to open it. Install an extension only when you need a workflow Edge does not provide, such as integrated screen recording, a particular editor, or a different export process.

Use Edge’s built-in Screenshot first

Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture the visible selection or a complete webpage, including content below the viewport. Microsoft also describes it as suitable for long or moving content such as videos, GIFs, and carousels. After capture, you can draw or add other markup, copy the image, or save it.

  1. Open the page you want to capture.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  3. Choose a full-page capture or drag over a selected area.
  4. Use the pen or touch markup tools if needed.
  5. Copy the result or save it to your device.

The Screenshot command may also be available from the page context menu or Edge’s Settings and more menu. Exact controls can vary by browser version, device, and market. An organization can disable the feature with the WebCaptureEnabled policy; Microsoft’s policy documentation covers Windows and macOS from Edge 87, while its platform table lists Android and iOS as unsupported for this policy-controlled feature.

When the built-in tool is enough

  • A quick visible-region image for support or documentation.
  • A one-off full webpage capture.
  • Simple arrows, pen marks, or other annotations.
  • Copying a capture directly into another application.

Where it may fall short

Edge’s feature is a browser capture utility, not a general recording studio or an automated capture service. If you need scheduled screenshots, bulk URLs, API delivery, custom request headers, or a combined screenshot-and-recording workflow, compare an extension or a dedicated service instead.

Edge screenshot extensions compared

The Edge Add-ons listings describe different feature combinations. These are vendor or store descriptions, not independent speed, security, or reliability tests; listings and availability can change.

Extension Capabilities described in its listing Best fit to investigate
GoFullPage Full-page capture, image or PDF download, and a listed premium editor for cropping and annotation. The listing says unusually large pages may be split across images. Long-page exports or post-capture editing.
Scrnli Full-page, visible-screen, and area screenshots, editing, and screen recording. Review its current privacy disclosure and permissions before installation. Users who want recording alongside screenshots.
WebSnap Area, visible-screen, and scrolling/full-page capture, with text and other editing described in the store snippet. Integrated editing with several capture modes.

No evidence establishes that one of these is universally fastest, safest, or most reliable. Choose by capture scope, editing tools, output format, recording support, permission scope, and whether a desired feature is listed as premium.

Install an extension safely

  1. Open Edge’s Extensions page.
  2. Select Get Extensions for Microsoft Edge.
  3. Search for the extension and open its listing.
  4. Select Get.
  5. Read the permissions prompt, then confirm only if the requested access fits your use.

After installation, open Manage extensions to enable or disable the add-on, remove it, and control site access. Where Edge offers the choice, restrict access to specific sites or set activation to On click rather than allowing access on every site. Inspect the listing’s privacy disclosure, grant the narrowest practical access, and remove an extension you no longer need.

Using Chrome Web Store extensions

Edge can use extensions from the Chrome Web Store after you enable Allow extensions from other stores. Treat that as a separate installation source: verify the publisher, review the permissions again, and keep access restricted where possible.

How to take a full-page screenshot in Edge

Method 1: Edge Screenshot

  1. Navigate to the page and wait for its content to finish loading.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  3. Select the full-page option.
  4. Review the long capture, add markup, and choose copy or save.

Lazy-loaded sections, animated components, consent dialogs, or pages that change while scrolling can affect the result. If a full-page command is missing, check the context menu and Settings and more menu, then confirm that an organization policy has not disabled the feature.

Method 2: A full-page extension

  1. Install an extension whose listing explicitly says it supports scrolling or full-page capture.
  2. Open the target page and select the extension from the toolbar.
  3. Choose its full-page or scrolling mode.
  4. Wait for the extension to finish scrolling and stitching the page.
  5. Export in the format offered by that extension, then inspect very long pages for seams or missing sections.

GoFullPage’s listing, for example, mentions image and PDF downloads and warns that unusually large pages may be split across images. That is a listing statement, not a guarantee for every page.

Windows Snipping Tool as a simpler alternative

For a screenshot of what is currently on your monitor, Windows Snipping Tool may be preferable to a browser extension. Press Windows+Shift+S, then choose a region, window, or full-screen mode. It supports annotation and saving. The documented Snipping Tool workflow is screen-oriented; unlike Edge’s Screenshot feature, the cited documentation does not present it as a webpage-aware full-page capture tool.

Choose the right capture method

Need Recommended starting point Reason
One visible area Edge Screenshot or Snipping Tool Fast selection and markup without installing an add-on.
Entire scrolling webpage Edge Screenshot, then a full-page extension if needed Edge supports content beyond the viewport; extensions add alternative export and editing workflows.
Recording plus screenshots Investigate Scrnli’s current listing Its listing describes both recording and screenshot modes.
Long-page export to PDF Investigate GoFullPage’s current listing Its listing describes image and PDF downloads.
Automated, repeatable captures ScreenshotNeo It is an API and MCP server rather than a toolbar plug-in, with clean shots and billing only for clean results.

Or skip the browser setup

For automated captures, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A minimal cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper and margin controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, ad/tracker/request blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL-based caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and familiar parameter names for easier migration.

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes every feature: 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshooting Edge captures

The Screenshot command is missing

Try Ctrl+Shift+S, the page context menu, and Settings and more. If all are absent, update Edge and check whether a managed-device policy has disabled the feature.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

The extension button does nothing

Open Manage extensions, confirm the extension is enabled, update Edge and the extension, and verify that the extension has permission to access the current site. Some pages, including browser-internal pages, restrict extension execution.

The full-page image is incomplete

Wait for the page to load, disable interfering overlays, and retry. Pages with lazy content, rapidly changing animations, or unusual scrolling behavior can produce incomplete or stitched results. Inspect very long captures for split files or missing sections.

Annotations or export options are unavailable

Check whether the listing describes that capability as premium, and confirm that you are using the extension’s editor rather than Edge’s basic markup tools.

A work computer blocks installation

Your organization may restrict extension installation or Edge capture features. Contact the administrator rather than bypassing policy controls.

Practical privacy and reliability checks

  • Read the current store permissions and privacy disclosure before installing.
  • Use site-specific or on-click access whenever it meets your workflow.
  • Capture a non-sensitive test page before processing private or authenticated content.
  • Keep Edge and extensions updated.
  • For repeatable jobs, record the URL, viewport, output format, and page state so you can reproduce a capture.
  • For API jobs, use timeouts, inspect response headers, and choose caching or asynchronous delivery when appropriate.

FAQ

Does Edge have a screenshot extension built in?

It has a built-in Screenshot feature, so an extension is optional rather than required for full-page or selected-area captures.

Can Edge screenshot a whole webpage?

Yes. The built-in tool is documented for full-page capture, including content beyond the visible viewport.

Are Edge screenshot extensions free?

Pricing varies by extension. GoFullPage’s listing describes a premium editor, but the basic capture and export terms should be checked in the current listing.

Can I use an Edge extension on every website?

Only if its permissions and the page allow it. Edge lets you restrict site access, and browser-internal pages can block extensions.
