For a selected area, press Windows + Shift + S. For a full-screen image saved automatically, press Windows + PrtScn and open PicturesScreenshots. Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to “Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen.” The available modes and key behavior come from Microsoft’s current support documentation: Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots and Keyboard shortcuts in Windows.
How to capture part of the screen
1. Open the Snipping Tool overlay
Press Windows + Shift + S. The desktop dims and a compact toolbar appears at the top of the screen.
2. Choose a capture mode
- Rectangle: Drag around the exact area you want.
- Window: Select one open application window.
- Full screen: Capture every display area included by the tool.
- Freeform: Draw an irregular outline around the content.
3. Make the capture and decide where it goes
After you release the mouse or select a window, Windows copies the still image to the clipboard and shows a notification. Select that notification to open the capture in Snipping Tool. From there you can annotate, crop, copy or save it. If you dismiss the notification, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and work from its window.

Use Ctrl + C in the editor to copy the image and Ctrl + S to save it. The overlay also supports Alt + M to choose a snipping mode, Alt + N to make a new snip in the same mode and Alt + D to set a delay from one to five seconds.
How to save a full-screen screenshot automatically
Press Windows + PrtScn. The screen may briefly dim, and Windows writes the full-screen capture to PicturesScreenshots in your user profile. In File Explorer, open Pictures, then Screenshots. This shortcut saves a file rather than leaving the image only on the clipboard.
If you use OneDrive to back up your Pictures folder, the exact visible path can include your OneDrive folder, but the Screenshots subfolder remains under Pictures.
How to capture only the active window
Click the window you want, then press Alt + PrtScn. Windows copies the frontmost window to the clipboard, excluding other windows and most of the desktop behind it. Open Paint, Word, an image editor, a messaging box or another destination and press Ctrl + V to paste it. This shortcut does not automatically create a file in PicturesScreenshots.

What the standalone Print Screen key does
On current Windows keyboard guidance, pressing PrtScn opens screen snipping by default. That behavior is configurable. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and look for the Print Screen option; turn the screen-snipping behavior on or off to match your workflow. If your key instead copies the entire display, that setting has likely been changed or your keyboard uses its own utility.
Key labels vary. You may see PrtSc, PrtScn, Print Scr or a secondary function printed on another key. On compact laptops, hold Fn when the keyboard requires it.
Keyboards without a PrtScn key
Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an option for devices that do not provide a dedicated Print Screen key. It is hardware-dependent, so the combination may not work on every laptop or detachable keyboard. If it fails, use Windows + Shift + S, which does not require PrtScn, or consult the device maker’s keyboard diagram. Microsoft’s dedicated guidance is available at Keyboard shortcut for print screen.
Still image or screen recording?
Windows + Shift + R opens Snipping Tool’s video-capture overlay. It is useful when you need to demonstrate a sequence, but it does not take a single still screenshot. For a still image, use Windows + Shift + S, Windows + PrtScn, Alt + PrtScn or the configured PrtScn key instead.

Using a delay for menus and temporary controls
Some menus disappear as soon as you press another key or move the pointer. Open Snipping Tool, select a delay of one to five seconds with Alt + D, open the menu during the countdown and let the capture occur. The delay is especially useful for documenting context menus, hover states and transient notifications that are difficult to select after the snipping overlay appears.

If you cannot find a capture, first determine whether you used a clipboard shortcut. Press Ctrl + V in Paint or another suitable app; a successful paste confirms that the image was copied even if no file was created.
Choosing the fastest shortcut
- Choose Windows + Shift + S when you need a region, a specific window, a freeform outline or a quick edit.
- Choose Windows + PrtScn when you want a full-screen file without opening an editor.
- Choose Alt + PrtScn when the application window is the subject and you plan to paste it immediately.
- Choose PrtScn when you prefer its configured screen-snipping action and your keyboard includes the key.
- Choose Windows + Shift + R only when the required result is a recording.
Troubleshooting screenshot hotkeys
The shortcut does nothing
- Verify that you are pressing the Windows logo key, not Ctrl or Alt.
- On a laptop, try holding Fn with PrtScn if the key is shared with another function.
- Test Windows + Shift + S; it bypasses the need for a PrtScn key.
- Check whether a gaming mode, keyboard utility or manufacturer hotkey manager has disabled the Windows key.
The screenshot is copied but no file appears
That is expected for Windows + Shift + S and Alt + PrtScn. Paste the image into an application, or open the Snipping Tool notification and save it. Only Windows + PrtScn is the built-in shortcut in this set that directly saves a full-screen file.
The PrtScn key opens the wrong tool
Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review the Print Screen setting. Its configured behavior determines whether the key launches screen snipping or follows another capture action.

A menu disappears before it is captured
Use Snipping Tool’s one-to-five-second delay (Alt + D), open the menu during the countdown and wait for the capture.
The capture contains the wrong window
For Alt + PrtScn, click the target window first so it is active. For Windows + Shift + S, select Window mode and then choose the target window.
There is no PrtScn key
Use Windows + Shift + S, or try Microsoft’s hardware-dependent Fn + Windows + Space Bar combination. If the latter fails, your keyboard may not implement it.

It can capture the visible screen or a selected Snipping Tool area. It does not automatically create a browser’s full-page, scrolling capture; use the browser’s own full-page feature or a purpose-built capture workflow.
Does Alt + PrtScn save a PNG automatically?
No. It copies the active window to the clipboard. Paste it into an application and save it in the format and location you choose.
Why is my screenshot folder empty after pressing Windows + Shift + S?
That shortcut initially copies the image and opens a notification; it does not use the automatic PicturesScreenshots save behavior of Windows + PrtScn. Open the notification and save the snip.
