Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA screen-size simulator lets you preview a web page at a chosen browser-viewport width and height, so you can inspect how its layout responds and where its CSS media-query rules take effect. For a quick interactive check, use Responsive mode in Chrome DevTools; for repeatable automated checks, use Playwright. Neither is a literal substitute for testing on a real phone or tablet when device-specific behavior matters.
What a screen-size simulator does
A screen-size simulator changes the browser viewport used to display a page. You can enter a width and height, inspect the resulting layout, and move across the conditions your CSS uses to adapt the page. That makes it useful for finding issues such as a navigation menu that no longer fits, text that wraps awkwardly, or a page that overflows horizontally.
Responsive behavior is defined by the page, not by a universal list of screen widths. CSS media queries can respond to viewport width and height, but also to features such as orientation, aspect ratio, resolution, and user preferences. A preview helps you test those conditions; a preset labeled “Tablet,” for example, is a convenient viewport value, not a rule every tablet or website must follow.
For a manual preview in Chrome, open the page, open DevTools, enable the device toolbar, and choose Responsive mode. Enter a custom width and height or drag the viewport boundary. You can then inspect the page at the dimensions that matter to your design.

Choose the right way to preview a page
| Approach | Best for | What it can do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools Device Mode | Quick interactive inspection in Chrome | Custom viewport dimensions, width presets, media-query breakpoint display, device-pixel-ratio and device-type controls, orientation, screenshots, and optional CPU or network throttling. | Chrome describes it as a first-order approximation; the page is not running on physical mobile hardware. |
| Safari Responsive Design Mode | Interactive checks in Safari | Preview a page with viewport presets and inspect media queries and dynamic styles; Apple says the mode can be used alongside Web Inspector. | It is a Safari workflow. Exact controls can vary, so confirm them in the Safari version you have installed. |
| Playwright emulation | Repeatable browser checks and regression testing | Use device parameter presets and overrides for viewport, screen size, user agent, touch, and other browser-context settings. | Playwright is a testing framework, not just a visual preview page. A configured device profile simulates a platform and may set a platform-specific user agent. |
| Browser-based simulator page | A quick ad hoc preview | A third-party page may offer custom-width and custom-height previews. | Features and privacy practices depend on the particular provider. Verify its claims and handling of URLs before using it with sensitive pages. |
Test a page manually in Chrome DevTools
Chrome’s Device Mode is a practical starting point because it lets you inspect a live page while changing its viewport. The precise surrounding DevTools layout can change between Chrome versions, but the workflow is to open DevTools, turn on the device toolbar, and work in Responsive mode.
- Open the page and DevTools. Load the URL you want to inspect in Chrome, then open DevTools using Chrome’s menu or the keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
- Enable the device toolbar. In DevTools, select the device-toolbar control. Choose Responsive mode if a named device is selected.
- Set a useful viewport. Enter a width and height, or drag the viewport edge. Start with the smallest width that matters for your audience, then test intermediate and wider widths.
- Show media queries. Enable “Show media queries” in Device Mode. Chrome displays breakpoint bars; selecting a bar can move the viewport to the associated width.
- Inspect both sides of each breakpoint. Test just below and just above the breakpoints used by your project’s CSS. Look for abrupt shifts, clipped content, unexpected wrapping, or controls that become hard to use.
- Check other relevant conditions. Rotate to landscape where appropriate. If behavior depends on touch or device type, choose the relevant mode; consider device pixel ratio (DPR) when reviewing image sharpness.
- Capture a reference. Use Device Mode’s screenshot controls to save a viewport or full-page screenshot, then compare it with a later build.
Chrome’s width presets
Chrome for Developers’ Device Mode documentation, accessed September 29, 2026, lists these width presets. They are values supplied by the tool for convenient inspection—not universal CSS breakpoints or official dimensions for every device in a category.
| Chrome preset | Width |
|---|---|
| Mobile S | 320px |
| Mobile M | 375px |
| Mobile L | 425px |
| Tablet | 768px |
| Laptop | 1024px |
| Laptop L | 1440px |
| 4K | 2560px |
What to look for at each size
- Horizontal overflow: Check whether the document or a component is wider than the viewport. A wide table, long unbroken string, fixed-width image, or positioned element can push content sideways.
- Navigation and controls: Confirm that menus, buttons, forms, and other interactive elements remain visible and usable. A screenshot can show appearance, but it cannot establish that every interaction works.
- Text and content: Look for cramped line lengths, headings that collide with neighboring content, and elements whose fixed heights cut off wrapped text.
- Images and embedded content: Check whether content resizes or crops as intended, and whether the page introduces overflow at an intermediate width.
- Breakpoint transitions: A page may work at two preset widths but fail in between. Drag gradually or enter widths near the point where the layout changes.
Use Playwright when checks need to repeat
Playwright is a better fit when a team wants viewport checks to run alongside browser tests or wants to repeat the same test after code changes. Its emulation facilities include device parameter presets and overrides for settings such as viewport, screen size, user agent, and touch. It therefore covers more than choosing a width in an interactive preview, but it also requires a test setup and a browser-testing workflow.
Choose the browser and context settings that match the question you are investigating. A viewport-only check answers whether a layout fits at a particular width and height. A device profile can also change context such as user agent or touch behavior, so a difference in the result may not be caused by width alone. Keep those variables deliberate when comparing runs.

For a small test matrix, cover the project’s own CSS breakpoints and the widths where the page’s content naturally stops fitting—not just a list of device names. Capture or inspect the same page state at each point. Automated screenshots are useful for spotting visual changes across builds, but a screenshot difference still needs interpretation: dynamic content, fonts, animations, and asynchronous loading can produce changes unrelated to responsive layout.
Understand what emulation can and cannot tell you
Chrome’s Device Mode documentation calls it a “first-order approximation” of how a page looks and feels on a mobile device. The page code is simulated from a desktop or laptop rather than run on actual mobile hardware, and mobile CPU architecture can differ from a desktop or laptop’s. Emulation is consequently useful for viewport, layout, and breakpoint checks, but it does not prove that a page behaves identically on every phone.
Use a real phone or tablet when the result depends on hardware or browser behavior that desktop emulation may not reproduce. That is particularly relevant when a test involves actual touch interaction, device performance, or a browser-specific behavior. Use the simulator to narrow down layout issues efficiently, then verify consequential device-dependent behavior on representative hardware.
There is no single required set of responsive widths. Start from the CSS conditions your project defines and the content that needs to fit. Chrome’s named presets can provide useful checkpoints, but they should not replace testing around the project’s actual breakpoints.

A practical responsive-preview checklist
- Identify the smallest viewport relevant to the people using the site.
- In DevTools, enter custom width and height values or use Chrome’s presets as convenient starting points.
- Enable media-query display and inspect the layout on each side of the breakpoints in the project CSS.
- Check intermediate widths for overflow and awkward transitions, not only named device sizes.
- Test portrait and landscape, DPR, or touch/device type when those conditions matter to the page.
- Save screenshots when you need to compare a change with a previous build.
- Use a real phone or tablet to validate important behaviors that could depend on actual hardware or browser behavior.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a saved image or PDF rather than an interactive viewport to inspect, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. This is a capture, not an interactive simulator: it is useful when you need an output file or want to automate captures rather than manually drag a browser viewport.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo’s supplied product details describe support for any viewport and 63 options, including full-page capture, dark mode, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, and element capture. It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card required. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try it.
Common problems and fixes
The page looks fine at presets but breaks at another width
Presets are checkpoints, not a complete test. Enter a custom width near the point where content begins to wrap, or move gradually across the transition. Compare the result with your CSS media-query conditions rather than assuming the preset label defines the expected layout.

The page scrolls sideways
Inspect the element extending beyond the viewport. Common sources include fixed-width content, long unbroken text, images or embeds that do not shrink, and positioned elements. Check the component at the failing width and adjust its responsive behavior rather than hiding overflow without understanding what is being clipped.
A device preview does not behave like a real phone
That difference is a limitation of emulation, not necessarily a defect in the preview. Device Mode simulates a page from a desktop or laptop. Validate the specific behavior on an actual device when it depends on hardware or browser behavior.
The page changes between screenshot captures
First determine whether the page itself is dynamic or still loading content. Repeat the capture after the relevant content has stabilized and compare the same viewport and page state. A visual difference alone does not identify whether the cause is responsive CSS, changing content, or load timing.
Safari controls do not match an instruction
Responsive Design Mode belongs to Safari, and its interface can vary by installed version. Check the controls in the Safari version you use and consult Apple Developer Documentation; do not assume Chrome’s exact labels or placement apply.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Interactive browser previews are suited to quick diagnosis because you can change dimensions and see the page respond immediately. Automated emulation is more useful when the same checks need to be repeated as part of development or regression testing, but it adds the work of maintaining a test setup and choosing consistent browser-context settings.
For a reliable comparison, keep the URL, viewport, browser context, and page state consistent. A screenshot records what was rendered at one point in time; it does not by itself explain why a layout changed. If load timing or dynamic content is involved, make sure the page is in a comparable state before drawing conclusions.
The documented simulator options here are browser features and a testing framework; no separate simulator service price is established here. ScreenshotNeo’s stated plan prices are $5 for 3,000 shots on Starter, $15 for 15,000 on Growth, $39 for 60,000 on Pro, $99 for 250,000 on Scale, and $249 for 1,000,000 on Business; yearly billing gives two months free. The free plan is 1,000 shots per month without a card. These are ScreenshotNeo plan terms, not a cost comparison with the free browser workflows described above.

What is the difference between viewport size and device screen size?
The viewport is the area the browser uses to lay out a page. A device’s physical screen and browser viewport are related but are not interchangeable; a viewport preview tests the page’s layout dimensions, not every physical property of the device.
Should I test every width between mobile and desktop?
You generally get more useful coverage by checking widths around your actual CSS breakpoints and where your content stops fitting than by testing every possible pixel width.
