Screen recording saves captured video as a file for later viewing or editing. Streaming software sends live audio and video over the internet to a platform so viewers can watch as it happens. The two workflows overlap: OBS Studio, for example, supports both recording and live streaming.
What changes between recording and streaming?
| Factor | Screen recording | Live streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Output | A video file saved locally for later viewing or editing. | A live audio-and-video feed sent to a platform or service. |
| When people watch | After you capture, edit, or publish the file. | While the event is happening. |
| Network connection | Not required to save a local recording; you will need a connection to upload or share it later. | Required to deliver the live feed to the chosen service. |
| Local storage | Requires enough free space and adequate write performance for the file. | A separate local file is optional; you can stream without saving one. |
| Settings priorities | File format and suitability for later editing may matter most. | Settings must suit the platform and live delivery conditions. |
| Workload | Depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. | Depends on those same capture and encoding choices, as well as live delivery conditions. |
These are workflow distinctions, not absolute software categories. Recording and streaming both involve capturing and encoding media, but one produces a local file and the other sends a live feed to a service. YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder describes sending a live broadcast through software or a hardware encoder.
Which workflow should you choose?
Choose recording for a file you will use later
Recording is the direct fit for a tutorial, presentation, gameplay session, or demonstration you plan to edit, archive, or publish after capture. Plan for local storage: file size and writing performance depend on the recording settings and system, and the file must be saved somewhere.
Choose streaming when viewers need to watch live
Use a streaming workflow when the audience needs to see the event as it happens. In addition to capturing and encoding video, you must deliver it over a network to the platform. Follow that platform’s current setup instructions; YouTube’s encoder guide explains its own process and should not be treated as a universal specification for other services.

Use both when you need a live audience and a reusable file
If you want viewers to watch live and also need a copy for editing or archiving, choose software that can stream and record. Check its output settings: a local recording is not automatic merely because you are streaming.
Can recording and streaming use the same software?
Yes. The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” Its features include real-time video and audio capture and mixing, scenes built from multiple sources, and both streaming and recording. Listed source examples include webcams and capture cards. This makes OBS a clear example of software that spans both workflows rather than belonging to only one category. See the OBS Project’s official product page.

OBS’s overview guide explains that its advanced output mode allows stream and recording settings to be configured independently. That matters when, for example, the settings suited to live delivery are not the settings you want for a file you plan to edit. Consult the OBS Studio Overview for the current interface and options.
Does streaming use more computer resources than recording?
There is no universal resource difference that applies to every setup. OBS says CPU needs vary considerably with the encoder, resolution, frames per second (FPS), and scene complexity, and cautions that meeting basic requirements does not guarantee successful recording or streaming. Streaming also depends on live delivery conditions; recording depends on having sufficient local storage and write performance. Neither fact establishes that streaming always needs a more powerful computer.

The OBS Project’s system requirements page states: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It recommends trying the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Because that page is dated 2021-08-25, check OBS’s current documentation for up-to-date operating-system support rather than relying on that page for present-day compatibility details.
Practical checks before you start
- Decide what the audience needs: a file after the fact, a live feed, or both.
- For recording, confirm you have room to save the file and that your chosen settings suit later viewing or editing.
- For streaming, follow the selected platform’s current setup guidance and make sure you have network delivery available.
- For either workflow, start with settings your computer can handle. Encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity all affect workload; test your intended setup rather than assuming a hardware requirement applies to everyone.
- If you need both outputs, confirm the software supports simultaneous recording and streaming and review each output’s settings.
Common misconceptions
- “Recording software and streaming software are separate kinds of apps.” Some tools, including OBS Studio, support both.
- “Streaming always needs a stronger computer.” Performance depends on the chosen encoder and workload; there is no supported universal resource gap.
- “A stable internet connection replaces storage.” It does not provide a local recording file. If you also want one, save a separate recording.
- “A microphone or capture card is required.” Neither is a requirement for the basic distinction or software workflow. They can be useful for particular audio or external-source setups.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different use case—keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
