The “iPhone Duo” in this story is not an Apple product confirmed by the evidence available here. Windows Latest reported on October 1, 2026, that Apple had announced such a device and quoted former Microsoft technical advisor Mat Velloso reacting to the news with a jab about the Surface Duo team. Microsoft’s Surface Duo was real: it paired two separate displays for multitasking, but the company’s official documentation now says both generations have reached end of servicing.
What did Nadella’s former advisor say?
Windows Latest reported that Mat Velloso, whom it describes as Satya Nadella’s technical advisor for four years, posted: “Somewhere a thousand voices who worked on Surface Duo screamed into their pillows.” The line evokes the possibility that Apple could succeed with a folding phone after Microsoft pursued a related mobile-productivity idea.

In the same account, Velloso pushed back on blaming Nadella for Surface Duo’s outcome. Windows Latest quoted him saying: “Satya didn’t block anything, I don’t get why he’s to blame here. The product was launched, it didn’t take off.” He also argued that people were conflating Nadella’s role in setting priorities with the market’s response, adding that “Nobody blocked this product, that’s why many of us still have it.”

Was Apple’s “iPhone Duo” the Surface Duo 3 Microsoft cancelled?
Not on the evidence available here. Windows Latest describes an alleged Apple device with a single folding display and reports that Microsoft cancelled a Surface Duo 3 and another foldable successor in 2023. No Apple announcement confirming the “iPhone Duo,” and no primary Microsoft confirmation of the cancellation, is established by the sources cited here. The name and the suggestion that Apple’s device is the successor the Duo should have been therefore remain part of the article’s framing, not confirmed product history.
The concepts also differ in a material way. Microsoft’s specifications describe the first Surface Duo as having two distinct displays joined by a hinge. Windows Latest characterizes the alleged Apple device as a single folding display. That distinction matters: a dual-screen device and a phone with one foldable panel may serve overlapping multitasking goals, but they are not the same hardware design.
What the Surface Duo was designed to do
Microsoft’s first-generation Surface Duo was an Android device with two PixelSense Fusion displays, a hinge, and USB-C. Its software let users run apps across the two screens. Microsoft’s published specifications and update history are available on its Surface Duo specifications and updates page.
The productivity idea was not merely a later interpretation of the hardware. In a 2019 GeekWire interview, Nadella described keeping a video conversation on one display while taking notes in OneNote on the other: “I can actually have the conversation happening in full video on one screen and on another screen, I can take notes on OneNote.” That example captures the Duo’s intended advantage: two visible work areas rather than a single screen divided by software.
Windows Latest says the original Duo launched in 2020. Microsoft’s documentation confirms the device’s identity and design, while the launch year in this account is attributed to Windows Latest. The company’s update history records later operating-system releases, including Android 11 and Android 12L; those entries establish software updates, not a general finding about reliability or app support.

What happened to Surface Duo support?
Microsoft says the original Surface Duo has reached end of servicing. It will not receive newer Android versions or security updates, according to the company’s support documentation. Anyone considering a used or refurbished unit should treat that as a significant limitation, particularly if the device would be used for sensitive accounts or everyday online activity.
The second-generation Surface Duo 2 is also past end of servicing, according to Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 features page. Its update history lists an October 8, 2024 update addressing scenarios in the October 2024 Android Security Bulletin. That record is not a promise of ongoing updates; Microsoft’s page says servicing has ended.
What the reactions do—and do not—tell us
The “pillows” quip expresses a pointed contrast: Microsoft shipped a two-screen Android phone, while Windows Latest’s report casts Apple as entering the foldable-phone category. It does not show that Apple copied Surface Duo, that the products are technically equivalent, or that Apple has a confirmed device ready to buy.
Nor do the reported comments settle whether Nadella personally caused the Duo’s fate. Velloso says the product was launched and that the market did not adopt it; Windows Latest separately reports the Duo 3 cancellation and argues that developer support was a major problem. The available material does not quantify app support or independently establish the cancellation’s circumstances. These points are useful context, but they remain reported interpretations rather than a documented causal account.
There is also a historical rationale for why Microsoft explored the form factor. Nadella’s 2019 example makes the intended workflow concrete, while the two-screen hardware and Android software are documented by Microsoft. The difference between an appealing use case and a successful product is the central tension behind Velloso’s remark; the quote itself cannot explain that gap.
