What Etsy’s rules say about scraping
Etsy’s Terms of Use prohibit crawling, scraping, or spidering its Services without express permission. Its API Terms separately prohibit using or promoting automated systems or browser extensions to access, analyze, or scrape the Etsy Site, API, or Etsy data unless Etsy has expressly authorized the activity in writing. The API Terms page is marked last updated June 16, 2025.

That restriction applies to Etsy data such as listings, shops, and user profiles. Calling an API endpoint, automating a browser, or routing requests through a proxy does not, by itself, create permission. Etsy’s published rules describe contractual restrictions; they do not settle how the law applies to every collection or use in every jurisdiction.
Which Etsy API access route fits your project?
Etsy offers Open API v3. Its access guide distinguishes three routes; the right one depends on whether you are building for your own shop, at limited scale, or for a broader group of sellers.

For your own shop
Etsy directs individual sellers building tools for their own shop to register a Seller App. Depending on its approved API scopes, it can access the developer’s own shop data, including listings, orders, and inventory. This route cannot be used to access other sellers’ private shop data or to build an app for the broader seller community.
For a tool serving other sellers
Etsy Help directs developers building for other sellers to register a Personal App and then apply for Commercial Access. Commercial Access may provide public endpoints and OAuth-authenticated endpoints for sellers who grant consent, subject to the applicable scopes. Etsy reviews these requests manually, and approval is not guaranteed.

What an API key does—and does not—let you access
An API key is not universal permission to retrieve all Etsy listings, shops, or seller information. Access to private member data depends on OAuth authorization by the relevant user, and the scopes granted to the app must cover the operation. Etsy’s endpoint documentation determines the method, fields, and scopes for a particular request; those details can change.

For Open API v3, Etsy documents the base hostnames https://api.etsy.com/v3/ and https://openapi.etsy.com/v3/. Requests use HTTPS and an x-api-key header containing the app key string and shared secret in Etsy’s documented format. If an endpoint requires OAuth scopes, the request also needs an Authorization: Bearer token. These are request requirements, not a complete recipe for any particular endpoint.
Can you collect Etsy prices or build a price history?
An approved app may display data it is authorized to access, subject to Etsy’s freshness, storage, and use restrictions. That is different from creating a long-term competitive-price dataset or redistributing an archive of prices. Etsy’s API Terms prohibit requesting or collecting Etsy content for analytics unless Etsy expressly authorizes it in writing; the terms’ display and retention rules do not establish a general right to make or share a price-history database.

- Listing content: display it no more than six hours behind the corresponding content on Etsy.
- Other Etsy content: display it no more than twenty-four hours behind the corresponding content on Etsy.
- Stored API content: do not cache or retain it longer than reasonably necessary to provide the app’s service to its users.
The same terms say member personal information obtained through the API may be processed only to provide services to the applicable seller, in accordance with the application terms and relevant privacy laws. These constraints matter when designing refresh schedules, caches, exports, and any feature that keeps a record after it is no longer needed to serve the app.

Plan for limits and changing API details
Etsy sets default per-key daily request limits in its developer documentation and can change or restrict them. The API Terms identify three million API calls per day as the threshold above which an application must qualify for the Enterprise Tier; that figure is not the ordinary default quota. Check Etsy’s current developer documentation for the limit that applies to your key, as well as endpoint availability, fields, and scopes.
Before building, define the exact seller use case, the data the app needs, and the minimum retention period. Register the appropriate app type, request only the scopes needed, obtain OAuth consent wherever required, and design around the applicable display and storage limits. If the intended feature depends on automated collection outside the API or on retaining data for a use Etsy’s terms do not authorize, seek Etsy’s express written authorization rather than trying to work around the controls.
