Scott McNeill, Scottish Friendly’s current chief actuary, has been appointed its next chief financial officer, subject to regulatory approval. He is expected to succeed Alan Rankine and, if the proposed merger with OneFamily proceeds and approvals are secured, become CFO of the combined organisation.
Who is Scott McNeill, Scottish Friendly’s incoming CFO?
McNeill is currently Scottish Friendly’s chief actuary. His appointment as CFO is subject to regulatory approval, and he is expected to lead the society’s finance function and join its executive board. The appointment report did not give a precise start date.
Scottish Friendly chief executive Stephen McGee said McNeill’s business knowledge and actuarial and financial expertise made him well placed to lead the finance function. McNeill said he was delighted to take on the opportunity at an important time in the society’s history.
Why is Alan Rankine leaving?
Rankine plans to step down as CFO and take up an opportunity outside Scottish Friendly. He is expected to remain until early 2027 to support the proposed merger and an orderly handover. The report says he joined the society as chief actuary in 2018 and became CFO in 2022; it does not give a reason for his departure beyond the outside opportunity.

How does the appointment relate to the OneFamily merger?
OneFamily and Scottish Friendly announced a proposed merger on 4 February 2026. The organisations said the combined mutual would have over 2.3 million members and almost £10 billion in assets under management. Those figures describe the projected group, not a completed merger or a post-merger measurement.
Under the proposal, the combined mutual would operate under the OneFamily group name, while the Scottish Friendly, OneFamily and Beagle Street brands would remain. The organisations also said they would maintain bases in Brighton and Glasgow. McNeill is expected to become CFO of the future merged organisation, but that role is conditional on the relevant approvals.

When is the merger expected to happen?
When the merger was announced, the organisations expected it to take effect in early 2027, subject to necessary approvals. Scottish Friendly’s 2025 results release also described early 2027 as the expected timing and kept the regulatory condition explicit. These are forecasts, not confirmation of a completion date or evidence that approvals have been granted.
As reported on 1 October 2026, the appointment and proposed transaction remain distinct steps: McNeill’s CFO appointment is subject to regulatory approval, and the merger itself is still a proposal whose completion depends on the required approvals.
