Scotland’s £7,500 Heat Pump Grant: Could Low Gas Use Limit Your Savings?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low gas use can mean there is less gas spending for a heat pump to displace, but it does not by itself show whether switching will save money. For a qualifying Scottish homeowner, the Home Energy Scotland scheme currently offers a heat-pump grant of up to £7,500, with an optional interest-free loan of up to a further £7,500. The useful comparison is your actual gas use and tariff against a proposed system’s modeled electricity use and tariff, alongside the installed cost after any confirmed grant.

Could low gas use mean a heat pump will not save much?

It could limit the amount of gas expenditure available to replace, but low use alone is not a verdict on savings. The result depends on the home’s heat demand, the heat pump’s performance, electricity and gas tariffs, controls, the heating system being replaced, and whether you stop paying a gas standing charge.

A low annual gas figure could have several explanations—for example, a small or warm home, limited occupancy, or heating habits. Those are possibilities to investigate, not conclusions about your household. Home Energy Scotland publishes no low-gas-use threshold at which a heat pump stops saving money.

Home Energy Scotland’s examples for a gas-heated semi-detached home indicate around £80 a year in savings for a medium-performing heat pump and around £170 for a high-performing one. These are illustrative examples, not forecasts for a low-use household or a guarantee of savings; the same guidance says results vary with installation quality, the old system, tariff and controls. Include the gas standing charge only if you end the gas supply

If the home becomes all-electric and the gas supply is removed, the gas standing charge may also be avoided. Home Energy Scotland cited around £128 a year as an illustration in January 2026 and notes that standing charges can change. This is separate from the heat-pump running-cost comparison; it does not apply if you keep the gas account open.

Is the £7,500 grant available to you?

The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme offers a grant of up to £7,500 for qualifying heat-pump work. It is a maximum, not a guaranteed payment. Applicants can also request an optional interest-free heat-pump loan of up to £7,500. Funding is subject to availability and allocated first-come, first-served. The scheme is for an existing home in Scotland that you own and occupy as your only or primary private residence. Second homes and holiday homes are not eligible under the terms, and receiving benefits is not a qualification requirement. Check the scheme overview and current eligibility terms.

Rural and island uplift

Eligible remote rural and island addresses may qualify for a £1,500 uplift, raising the heat-pump grant cap to £9,000. Eligibility depends on the scheme’s Urban Rural Classification and postcode assessment, including specified off-gas accessible rural areas; a rural-sounding address alone is not enough. These figures are not quotes. They are based on mean invoices supplied by Home Energy Scotland applicants from 2019–2025, with inflationary uplifts applied to earlier years. The underlying jobs ranged from homes needing little work to those requiring extensive upgrades; costs may include pipework, a hot-water cylinder or upgraded radiators. Your grant amount, eligibility and installer quote determine your own figures. Home Energy Scotland’s costs and savings guide.

Keep the upfront decision separate from the running-cost comparison. The grant reduces eligible capital cost; an optional loan may spread some cost but is still repayable. A household-specific payback cannot be calculated from the published examples alone: the sources do not establish your heat demand, gas use, tariffs, proposed electricity consumption, quote or required upgrades.

How to make a useful household comparison

  1. Gather your actual energy information. Record annual gas consumption and the tariff, and note whether gas is used for heating, hot water or other appliances. Use bills or account records rather than inferring heat demand from a single low bill.
  2. Get an assessed design and itemised quote. Ask an eligible installer for the proposed system’s modeled annual electricity use, expected performance, and any radiator, pipework or hot-water-cylinder work. Confirm which work qualifies for scheme support.
  3. Compare annual energy costs at your tariffs. Calculate current gas costs using your actual use and tariff, then compare with the proposed heat pump’s modeled electricity use at your electricity tariff. Include any gas standing charge only if you plan to remove the supply.
  4. Compare the capital cost separately. Use the written grant offer and your quote to calculate the amount you would pay, then account separately for any optional loan repayments and work not covered by the grant.

This comparison uses the variables Home Energy Scotland identifies—system performance, controls, tariff and the heating system replaced—without treating a national illustration as a prediction for your home. See its costs and savings guidance.

Apply before installation begins

Do not let installation work start while the application is pending. The scheme reserves funding when it sends a written offer, not when you submit an application; the terms require you to wait for that offer. A post-installation EPC is required with the claim. Home Energy Scotland’s terms and scheme overview.

  1. Contact Home Energy Scotland to discuss eligibility for you, your home and its address.
  2. Arrange an assessment and obtain a quotation for an eligible whole-home heating and hot-water system from an appropriately certified installer.
  3. Submit the grant and, if wanted, loan application. Wait for the written funding offer before any work begins.
  4. After completing the funded work, submit the claim documents, including the required post-installation EPC. The Scottish Government describes application-before-work and claim-after-completion as separate stages: Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme process.

The scheme does not provide a grant for replacing an existing heat pump. Its terms describe a possible case-by-case interest-free loan for replacement renewable systems; check the current terms rather than assuming this applies. This is a Scottish scheme and should not be confused with England’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
