Is the world really going to end on November 13, 2026?
There is no credible scientific evidence that the world will end on that date. The calendar entry originated in a paper titled “Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026,” published in Science in 1960 by Heinz von Foerster, Patricia M. Mora and Lawrence W. Amiot.

The authors fitted a mathematical model to population data and extended the observed acceleration forward. Under the model’s assumptions, the population function approached infinity on November 13, 2026. That date was a mathematical singularity: the point at which the equation stopped producing a physically meaningful finite population. It was not an appointment with an apocalypse.

A singularity in an equation does not mean that nature has scheduled an event. It means the model becomes unusable under the conditions imposed by its assumptions. In this case, the key assumption was that earlier accelerating growth would continue unchanged indefinitely.

What did scientists actually predict?
The 1960 paper was a warning about the consequences of treating rapid growth as permanent. It did not predict a specific mechanism of destruction. The authors were highlighting the danger of rising population pressure and finite environmental limits, not forecasting an asteroid strike, nuclear war, religious rapture or instant annihilation.
A contemporary account quotes von Foerster and his colleagues: “Our great-great-grandchildren will not starve,” they argued. “They will be squeezed to death.” Read in context, that is a warning about environmental and social stress. It is fundamentally different from saying that every person on Earth would die on a named Friday.

Birth rates declined, and the rate of global population increase slowed. Once those inputs changed, extending the old curve no longer described reality. The date therefore illustrates a familiar modeling problem: a mathematically precise output can still be misleading when a changing human system is projected as if it were constant.

Is this an asteroid warning?
No cited evidence links November 13, 2026 to an asteroid impact. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has stated: “There is no scientific basis — not one shred of evidence — that an asteroid or any other celestial object will impact Earth on those dates.” That statement addresses date-based impact rumors; it does not mean that every future asteroid risk is zero.
NASA’s material on Didymos and Dimorphos says those asteroids are not a threat to Earth. It describes the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) as a demonstration of asteroid-deflection technology. This is how an actual space hazard is evaluated: astronomers observe an object, calculate and repeatedly update its orbit, quantify uncertainty and communicate the resulting risk. A memorable date, by itself, supplies none of that evidence.

Why did the claim resurface?
The combination of a precise date, the word “doomsday” and a genuine paper makes the story easy to recirculate. Viral retellings often remove the conditional wording and present the singularity as if it were a prophecy. They may also blend the population argument with unrelated asteroid or apocalypse narratives.
The strongest way to check the claim is to separate three things:
- Source type: the original 1960 paper is primary evidence for what was calculated; a viral post is not.
- Assumption: the paper extended an accelerating mathematical trend, while observed demographic behavior changed.
- Hazard evidence: a calendar-date assertion is not equivalent to an observed object with a calculated orbit and impact probability.
Should I be worried?
You do not need to take special action because of November 13, 2026. There is no established catastrophe scheduled for that date in the evidence described above.
The useful concern is broader and less theatrical. Population, climate, resource and other social systems can create serious risks, but their trajectories depend on fertility, policy, technology, consumption, migration and environmental feedbacks. Those variables change. Responsible analysis therefore updates its models instead of treating one historical curve as destiny.
The episode is also a lesson in how to read precise predictions. Ask what was measured, which assumptions were held constant, whether those assumptions still match observations, and what independent evidence supports the proposed hazard. Precision in the final date cannot compensate for a broken premise.
