A 2026 Nature Communications study catalogued 11,742 sequence-based viral groups in sediment about 5.2 kilometres beneath the Pacific Ocean. The result does not mean scientists cultured 11,742 new virus species: 99.3% of the groups failed to match the study’s reference databases, revealing how little deep-sea viral diversity has been documented.
What scientists actually found
The headline number refers to viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs). A vOTU is a cluster of assembled DNA sequences that appear related under a study’s computational criteria. It is not automatically a formally recognised species, an isolated virus, a complete genome or proof that a virus is currently infecting cells.

Researchers first assembled 14,181 viral sequences longer than five kilobases. Clustering those sequences produced 11,742 vOTUs. Of those, 11,662—99.3%—did not cluster with the comparison sequences in the reference databases. That percentage measures the databases’ limited coverage of Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) viruses; it does not prove that every group evolved recently or that no related sequence exists anywhere else.

Where the samples came from
The samples came from sediment in the CCZ, a polymetallic-nodule province between Mexico and Hawaii that is being explored for seabed mining. The newly collected cores were taken at water depths of 5,169 to 5,285 metres. “19,700 feet” is a rounded description of the region’s maximum depth near 6,000 metres, not the exact depth of every sample.

The project combined 53 newly collected samples from 14 stations with seven previously published samples, for 60 sediment samples in total. Cores were collected during cruises in 2023 and 2024, then frozen and processed for genetic analysis.
How the viral survey worked
- Researchers collected sediment cores from the deep CCZ during research cruises.
- They extracted genetic material from the frozen sediment, which contains DNA from many organisms and particles mixed together.
- Sequencing reads were assembled into longer DNA sequences.
- Computational tools identified sequences with viral characteristics and grouped related assemblies into vOTUs.
- The resulting groups were compared with existing viral reference sequences and assessed for genome completeness and possible microbial hosts.
This is a metagenomic survey. Scientists inferred viral groups from environmental DNA rather than growing each virus in a laboratory or photographing individual particles. Detection of a sequence does not establish that the corresponding virus is active, infectious, or present as an intact particle at the time of sampling.
What the viruses may be doing in the sediment
Most predicted hosts are prokaryotic microbes—especially bacteria and archaea—not animals or people. Sequence analysis linked candidate viral genes and host associations to microbial transformations involving carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur and metals.

Infection and cell lysis
When viruses infect microbes, they can kill host cells and release cellular contents through lysis. That process may redistribute nutrients and alter which microbial populations dominate the sediment.
Auxiliary metabolic genes
Some viruses carry genes that may alter host metabolism during infection. In the CCZ, such genes could influence how infected microbes process compounds involved in element cycling. These are ecological hypotheses from sequence data, not measurements of reaction rates, gene expression or the amount of carbon or metal transformed.
Why this matters before deep-sea mining
Polymetallic nodules create a distinctive seabed habitat. A catalogue made before large-scale disturbance gives scientists a reference point for later comparisons of viral community composition, predicted hosts and possible functions.

The study does not measure what a mining vehicle, sediment plume, nodule-removal operation or redeposition event would do to these viruses. It cannot yet say whether viral communities would decline, persist, move with resuspended sediment or reassemble during recovery. Long-term disturbance experiments in nodule-field sediments have reported effects lasting for decades, making a pre-disturbance baseline useful for future monitoring, but the magnitude of any viral impact remains unknown.

No. “Never seen before” in this context means the sequences did not match the study’s comparison databases. It does not mean they are newly evolved, harmful or capable of infecting humans.
The host predictions in this work primarily involve environmental bacteria and archaea. The available study summaries provide no evidence that these sequences infect people or represent a new human-health threat. Establishing host range would require additional laboratory infection experiments and other biological tests.

Are these real virus species?
Some groups may correspond to viruses that are biologically distinct, but the 11,742 figure alone cannot establish formal species status. The catalogue contains a mixture of complete and incomplete genome reconstructions, and the study did not provide a complete count of cultured viruses or experimentally confirmed infections among the vOTUs.
Further work would need to combine deeper sampling with virus cultivation where possible, improved genome recovery, gene-expression measurements, host-linking experiments and disturbance studies. Those steps could show which sequences represent active viruses and how they function in the sediment ecosystem.
How this study fits earlier deep-ocean discoveries
Other research has found viruses in very old and deeply buried marine sediments. One deep-subsurface investigation detected viruses as far as 320 metres below the seafloor in sediments about 14 million years old, with virus counts exceeding cell counts in the samples examined. A separate Mariana Trench sediment study reported 3,206 viral scaffolds, most without known viral homologs.

Those findings support the plausibility of extensive, poorly catalogued deep-ocean viral diversity, but they used different environments, sampling designs and analytical methods. Their numbers should not be added to the CCZ total or treated as direct measurements of the same community.
What the 11,742 figure can—and cannot—tell us
- It can show: CCZ sediment contains a large, previously underrepresented set of viral DNA sequences.
- It can show: Existing reference databases capture only a small fraction of the sequence diversity recovered from this environment.
- It can suggest: Viruses may interact with microbial processes tied to nutrient and metal transformations.
- It cannot show: That all 11,742 groups are active, complete viruses or formally named species.
- It cannot show: The rate of infection, the amount of ecosystem material changed by viruses or the precise effect of mining.
- It cannot show: That any group infects humans.
The main significance is therefore ecological and methodological: scientists now have a much richer baseline for studying viral diversity in a deep-seabed region facing possible industrial disturbance.
