Scientists using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have found a set of chemically revealing clues in the disks where planets are born. The COMPASS survey examined molecular gas around 11 nearby, low-mass protostars and detected deuterium-bearing methanol in one disk, while more than half of the protostars produced natural methanol maser emission.

The observations do not show that life exists beyond Earth. They show that young planetary systems contain complex organic molecules and can experience the energetic conditions that help create, process or redistribute those molecules.

What the COMPASS team observed

COMPASS—“Complex Organic Molecules in Protostars with ALMA Spectral Surveys”—used ALMA’s high-resolution spectroscopy to identify molecular fingerprints in the gas surrounding 11 low-mass protostars. These objects are still assembling their stars and planet-forming disks, making them laboratories for studying the chemical inventory available before planets mature.

The project focuses on complex organic molecules: carbon-containing compounds that contribute to the material from which planets form and that can participate in prebiotic chemistry. The seven first COMPASS results were published in the October 2026 issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Methanol is the key tracer

Methanol (CH3OH) is central to the survey because the report identifies it as the most abundant complex organic molecule in interstellar space. Its abundance makes rare isotopic versions easier to detect with ALMA’s spectral measurements.

Why deuterated methanol matters

Deuterium is a heavier isotope of hydrogen. When deuterium replaces ordinary hydrogen in methanol, the resulting isotopic signature records information about the physical conditions in the disk. Detecting that signature can therefore help astronomers distinguish chemical histories among young systems.

ALMA found deuterium-bearing methanol in only one of the 11 surveyed disks: the disk around the young star IRAS 4A2 in the Perseus Molecular Cloud, roughly 1,000 light-years from Earth. The detection is a direct measurement in that system, not evidence that the same isotopic abundance exists in every planet-forming disk.

Natural methanol masers appeared in most of the sample

More than half of the 11 protostars showed natural methanol maser emission. Because the sample contains 11 objects, that means at least six sources. The detections favored the youngest protostars.

A maser is the microwave equivalent of a laser: molecules are put into an excited state, then stimulated emission amplifies radiation at a specific frequency. In these protostellar environments, collisions and shocks can excite methanol molecules strongly enough to produce the emission.

Why the low-mass detections are notable

Methanol masers had previously been observed in planet-forming disks around turbulent, high-mass protostars. COMPASS reports the first detections of this type in low-mass protostars, the class that includes systems more comparable to the young Sun.

The result challenges the idea that the extreme local conditions needed for these masers belong only to massive-star formation. A growing protostar can undergo a thermal burst as it accretes gas. That burst may drive shocks through nearby material, providing the excitation needed for methanol maser activity even in a relatively calm, low-mass system.

The chemical “starter kit” differs from star to star

ALMA also measured differences in the abundance of oxygen-bearing and nitrogen-bearing molecular species across the 11 systems. The finding means there is no single, identical chemical recipe shared by every young planetary system in the sample.

Observation Sample or location What it establishes
Deuterium-bearing methanol 1 of 11 disks; IRAS 4A2 A measurable isotopic signature exists in at least one low-mass protostellar disk.
Natural methanol maser emission More than half of 11 protostars Maser-producing conditions occur frequently enough in this sample to favor a broader process rather than a single exceptional object.
Oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing molecules Differences among the 11 systems The molecular inventory varies from star to star.

Does this prove life can form around other stars?

No. The observations detect molecules and physical processes associated with planet formation; they do not detect organisms, fossils or a living world. “Starter kit” describes the chemical ingredients and conditions that may feed later planetary chemistry, not a complete recipe for biology.

The broader implication is more limited and more useful: some processes that create or redistribute complex organics may be widespread during star and planet birth, including around low-mass stars. Whether those molecules survive disk evolution, reach a planet’s surface and enter a pathway toward biology remains unknown.

What scientists still need to determine

Why the chemical diversity exists

The COMPASS results show that oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing molecules vary between systems, but they do not yet identify the causes. Temperature, density, radiation, accretion history and the timing of chemical release are among the physical conditions encoded in the spectra, and the team is still analyzing the full molecular dataset.

How often maser-producing bursts occur

The maser detections support a link between shocks, accretion-related thermal bursts and methanol excitation, but the observations do not by themselves establish how long each burst lasts or how commonly it occurs over a protostar’s full evolution.

Whether the chemistry reaches planets

Finding molecules in a disk is not the same as demonstrating delivery to a finished planet. Future modeling and observations must trace how material moves from the disk into planetesimals, atmospheres or surfaces.

Next observations

COMPASS researchers expect the complete molecular analysis to take several more years. Follow-up observations are planned with facilities including the James Webb Space Telescope, whose infrared capabilities can provide complementary information about warm dust, ice and gas. Together, these measurements should help connect the molecular signatures seen by ALMA with the physical evolution of young planetary systems.

For now, the strongest conclusion is that low-mass protostars can host unexpectedly energetic, chemically diverse environments. That expands the range of places where the ingredients for planetary and prebiotic chemistry can arise, while leaving the origin of life itself an open question.
