Their study combined close examination of physical features with molecular data. The discovery is notable as the first description of new sea spider species from this coastal region in almost a century—not as the first sea spiders discovered anywhere in a century.
What are sea spiders?
Sea spiders are marine arthropods in the group Pycnogonida. Despite the name and their spindly legs, they are not terrestrial spiders. They live in the ocean, where they crawl along the seafloor; the animals in this study were collected by divers in coastal waters.

As general background, the University of British Columbia says sea spiders breathe through their skin and that males rear the young. These are group-level traits, not special characteristics established for the two newly described species.
Where were the new species found?
The Salish Sea is a coastal marine region between British Columbia and Washington. The University of British Columbia reports that specimens for the study were collected between September 2023 and August 2024 at sites including Quadra Island, Vancouver, Bamfield and Victoria. Divers worked at depths of up to 18 metres.

The regional setting matters: “new” here means newly described to science from the Salish Sea. The finding does not mean the animals were first found globally, nor does it establish that they are common throughout the region.
How did scientists identify them?
The paper, published in Organisms Diversity & Evolution on August 26, 2026, examined seven coastal Salish Sea species. Its authors used scanning electron microscopy to inspect fine anatomical features and molecular data to assess relationships among the animals. They redescribed five already-known regional species and formally described two as new. The paper also provides a dichotomous identification key, a step-by-step tool for distinguishing among the species covered.

Species identification rests on evidence considered together, rather than on a dramatic appearance alone. In this case, the researchers compared physical structures and DNA data; the paper’s scope also places the new descriptions within a broader examination of seven regional species.

The species names and reported traits come from the study and UBC’s account of it. The name pilosuspedes is not a reason to infer that the animal resembles a large spider in size: the source descriptions focus on small anatomical features examined at close range.

Are sea spiders dangerous to people?
Nothing in the study or institutional descriptions indicates that either newly described species threatens swimmers, attacks people or comes onto land. The vivid details—red eyes, spines and sensory structures—describe tiny marine anatomy, not aggression toward humans. These animals were collected underwater by divers.

UBC describes these as the first sea spider species newly described from the Salish Sea in almost a century. That is a regional milestone, not a claim about discoveries worldwide. The paper’s title and scope also reflect a taxonomic contribution: documenting and distinguishing seven coastal species, including five that were already known.

The work addresses a practical challenge in marine biology. In comments published by UBC, lead author Cormac Toler-Scott said he was interested in how sea spiders might be affected by climate change and human disturbance, but found little information to build on. Identifying species is a prerequisite for studying change in marine communities; this study does not demonstrate that the two newly named species are threatened.
UBC says T. kiixin was frequently found with debris and tiny parasites, while the study abstract specifically identifies its close association with Plumularia setacea. Those observations should not be expanded into claims about a complete diet, ecological function or conservation status that the descriptions do not establish.
