Scientists 3D-Print Concrete That Stores Energy and Still Supports a Structure

Yes—with an important qualification. A laboratory prototype combined a 3D-printed cement-based supercapacitor with a concrete slab. Tests found its compressive strength comparable to commercial concrete used in slabs and stairs, and three devices wired together powered a small LED array. That is promising materials research, not proof that a building made with energy-storing concrete is ready for construction.

How does 3D-printed concrete store electricity?

The 2026 study, “Monolithic 3D-Printed Interdigitated Cement-Based Supercapacitors for Structural Energy Storage,” reported in ACS Nano, uses concrete as part of a supercapacitor rather than as an ordinary battery. Researchers mixed carbon nanotubes and carbon black with cement to make a printable electrode ink, then printed it onto a small concrete slab in an interlocking-finger pattern called an interdigitated design. As the cement hydrated, water-filled pores provided a route for ions to move between the electrodes. The short spacing between the interlocking electrodes improved efficiency compared with earlier iterations, according to the American Chemical Society’s October 1, 2026 summary.

A supercapacitor stores and releases energy quickly and can tolerate many charge-discharge cycles, but it generally stores less energy than systems intended to supply power over sustained periods. The researchers describe a possible role alongside renewable generation that can recharge the device repeatedly—not as a standalone replacement for a conventional battery or the power grid.

What did the prototype demonstrate?

Question What the reported result establishes What it does not establish
Can it support a structure? Compressive strength was described as comparable to commercial concrete used in slabs and stairs. The ACS summary gives no exact strength value and does not establish building-code compliance, reinforcement design, scale-up, or validation of a full building.
Can it supply electricity? Three devices printed on one slab and wired together powered a small LED array. The demonstration does not show sustained building power, emergency-lighting readiness, or a commercially useful energy supply.
Can it work in cold conditions? Devices operated stably under moderate heating and cooling. Performance began to decline at about 0°F (−18°C); the researchers identified cold-weather performance as an area for future work.

The accessible ACS summary does not state this device’s capacitance, energy density, output power, cycle life, or exact compressive-strength measurement. Without those figures, it is not possible to quantify how much energy the prototype stores or how it would perform at building scale. The result supports the narrower claim that the tested material combined comparable compressive strength with a limited electrical demonstration.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why is this not building-ready concrete?

A slab-scale laboratory demonstration is different from a structural system approved and proven for a building. The reported comparison with commercial concrete is encouraging, but it is not a certification, a complete structural assessment, or evidence that the electrodes and energy-storage function will remain reliable over a building’s service life. The reported cold-temperature decline is also relevant for real-world use. The ACS account presents building-integrated energy storage, emergency lighting, and self-powered sensors as possible future applications, not as systems already operating in buildings.

Jing Zhong, the study’s corresponding author, described the larger possibility: “If renewable energy is available to recharge [the supercapacitors] frequently enough, they could meet some energy needs through repeated charging and discharging.” That is a conditional prospect, not a measured building-level result.

How does this differ from MIT’s other energy-storing concrete?

A separate line of research reported by MIT in 2025 is easy to confuse with the 2026 printed prototype, but the materials and demonstrations are distinct. MIT’s electron-conducting carbon concrete, or ec³, combines cement, water, ultra-fine carbon black, and electrolytes. The MIT account said an improved electrolyte and manufacturing approach raised storage capacity by “an order of magnitude.” It also described a small 9-volt arch that supported its own weight and additional load while powering an LED.

Research line Material and design Demonstration or reported metric
2026 ACS Nano prototype Carbon nanotube, carbon black, and cement electrode ink 3D-printed in an interdigitated pattern on a concrete slab. Three connected devices powered a small LED array; the ACS summary reports comparable compressive strength to commercial slab and stair concrete, without an exact value.
2025 MIT ec³ research Electron-conducting carbon concrete using cement, water, ultra-fine carbon black, and electrolytes. MIT reported more than 2 kilowatt-hours of storage per cubic meter for its organic-electrolyte version. For an average home’s daily needs, MIT estimated about 5 cubic meters of the improved ec³ formulation, compared with about 45 cubic meters for its earlier 2023 version.

The ec³ figures and structural arch demonstration belong to the separate MIT work, not the 2026 ACS Nano device. MIT’s estimates are not measurements for the printed interdigitated prototype and should not be used to infer its energy capacity. MIT’s account of its ec³ research is available from MIT News, October 1, 2025.

Another distinct 2025 study described a 3D-printed porous-concrete structural supercapacitor using carbon-black-coated nickel foam as electrodes and reinforcement. It is further evidence that structural energy storage is an active research area, not the design tested in the ACS report. A March 2025 journal result preview summarizes that separate study.

What might this mean for construction?

The idea is to make structural material perform another job: store energy near where it is generated or used. If future versions can meet structural requirements, store useful amounts of energy, and maintain performance through temperature changes and long service periods, components such as slabs could potentially contribute to a building’s energy system. The current LED demonstration shows a basic function, while the material’s construction-scale value remains unproven.

That broader direction fits within the development of 3D concrete printing, which is being explored for construction and for integrating functions into printed components. A 2025 Nature Reviews Clean Technology review surveys construction uses of 3D concrete printing and emerging integrations such as energy storage: review published April 4, 2025.
