The most visible part of that plan is Charley—called “Charlie” in one Schwab earnings statement—a generative-AI assistant scheduled to begin a phased rollout to eligible U.S. retail clients in October 2026.
Wurster’s broader message is that AI is bringing more people into investing, increasing engagement and creating more demand for advice. Schwab’s announced tools move from answering questions to suggesting next steps and completing selected tasks, while human representatives remain part of the service.

What Wurster says AI changes at Schwab
Wurster describes AI as an accelerator of Schwab’s client-focused model. In his framing, the advantage is not a chatbot by itself, but the combination of Schwab’s technology, proprietary data, scale, research, security controls and human professionals.
“It’s the combination of people and AI that’s going to win, and that’s where we’re perfectly set up,” Wurster said. He also summarized the business effect more bluntly: “AI is good for economics.”
#1 Best Overall
That means Schwab is pursuing two related routes. Wurster identified Charley as the preferred conversational path, while the company is also adding AI inside existing products and employee workflows. The second route includes portfolio analysis, tax and trust or estate applications, internal employee assistants and connections to large-language-model systems. Schwab presents those as staged capabilities, not as a single product that is already available in full.
What Charley (or “Charlie”) is
Charley is Schwab’s generative-AI assistant. Schwab’s September 30, 2026 rollout announcement uses “Charley,” while a later earnings-call quotation uses “Charlie.” Both references describe the same planned assistant.
Initial rollout
The company said on September 30 that deployment would begin in phases in October for eligible U.S. retail clients using Schwab.com and Schwab Mobile. Availability is therefore limited by client type, geography and rollout stage; it is not a promise that every Schwab account will see the assistant immediately.

- Ask questions by voice or text.
- Receive information and suggested next steps.
- Use selected Schwab tasks through the conversational interface.
- Connect with a Schwab representative when human help is appropriate.
The initial announcement does not say that Charley can autonomously execute every trade or perform every account action. Schwab says the task set will expand in phases. Its longer-term description is more ambitious: “Charlie will, over time, give you the full range of things you can do on schwab.com and be able to do anything through a conversation via either text or voice.” That is a roadmap statement, not a launch capability.

How Schwab’s AI model is supposed to work
Schwab’s model links a conversational interface to authenticated client context and the company’s own financial information. In practical terms, the intended progression is:
- Ask: A client enters a question by typing or speaking.
- Understand: The system interprets the request in the context of Schwab’s services and available account information.
- Explain: It returns information in plain language and may suggest a next step.
- Act: Where the feature is enabled, it can perform a selected task rather than merely describe a procedure.
- Escalate: The client can be connected to a Schwab representative.
The distinction between information, a recommendation and an executed action matters. A conversational answer is not automatically a completed transaction, and the launch description does not establish that Charley provides unrestricted trading authority.
Is AI replacing Schwab financial advisers?
Wurster’s public position is no. Schwab is presenting AI as a way to extend guidance to more clients and deepen relationships, not as a substitute for advisers in every situation.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Human expertise remains important when a client’s situation is complex, when several financial goals conflict, or when an investor is overwhelmed by too much information. Schwab’s own framing is that the value comes from pairing machine speed and scale with professional judgment.
This also explains why escalation to a representative is part of Charley’s announced design. The assistant is intended to be an entry point, not a claim that every financial decision can be safely reduced to a one-line answer.
What Schwab says investors are doing in 2026
More participation and engagement
Wurster associates AI with more people investing, more engagement from existing clients and higher daily trading. He does not attribute all trading growth to AI; market activity, volatility and investor participation are also drivers.
In a September 2026 CNBC interview, Wurster cited approximately $3.5 trillion in monthly cash movement and about $400 billion of client cash in a particular month. Those are Schwab management figures for the periods discussed, not universal measures of the U.S. market or a statement of Schwab’s assets under management.
Buying market dips and interest in AI investments
A July 21, 2026 Schwab interview linked current behavior to clients buying market dips and showing growing interest in investments connected with artificial intelligence. Schwab also reported that flows into its proprietary wealth solutions rose 85% in the first half of 2026. That percentage describes Schwab’s own flows for that period, not a market-wide trend.
Rank #4
Wurster’s explanation is that volatility can increase participation when investors see compelling themes such as AI. At the same time, rapidly changing information can increase the need for advice rather than eliminate it.
Evidence of client demand for AI tools
Schwab said a 2026 survey of more than 500 clients and prospects, conducted September 21–25, found that 65% believed AI could execute routine tasks or play a meaningful role in investing when paired with human expertise. The sample and dates make this a Schwab survey result, not a statistic for all retail investors.
During Schwab’s first-quarter 2026 earnings discussion, the company also said more than half of its clients were willing to pay for AI financial tools. Schwab did not provide an exact percentage in the cited statement, so the result should be read as directional rather than as a precise measure of willingness to pay.

What is available now versus what is planned
| Capability | Status described by Schwab | What that means for clients |
|---|---|---|
| Charley conversational assistant | Phased rollout beginning October 2026 | Eligible U.S. retail clients may receive access on Schwab.com and Schwab Mobile; timing and eligibility can vary. |
| Voice and text questions | Announced launch function | Clients can ask for information and guidance through either input mode. |
| Selected tasks | Announced initial scope | Some actions may be completed conversationally; unrestricted trading automation is not established. |
| Representative connection | Announced launch function | The assistant can hand off to a Schwab professional. |
| Portfolio Insights, tax, trust and estate tools | Part of a staged AI operating model | Schwab describes these as expanding applications, with availability dependent on product and rollout. |
| Full conversational access to schwab.com | Long-term ambition | Schwab says the scope should broaden over time; this is not the launch specification. |
How to evaluate Schwab’s approach against other AI investing services
Schwab’s claims can be assessed along six practical dimensions:
- Conversational breadth: Does the assistant only answer questions, or can it complete authenticated tasks?
- Human access: Is escalation to a qualified professional built into the same workflow?
- Data and research: Does the system use the brokerage’s portfolio data and proprietary research, or only general information?
- Security and authentication: What controls apply before account-specific information or actions are exposed?
- Personalization: Can responses reflect a client’s holdings, goals and tax situation?
- Availability: Which account types, countries, apps and rollout phases are supported?
The available Schwab statements establish the company’s design and positioning, but they do not provide a neutral head-to-head performance test against other brokerages or AI investing products. Investors should distinguish a vendor’s roadmap and marketing claims from independently measured accuracy, execution quality or investment returns.
What this means for Schwab clients
For clients, the near-term change is a new conversational front door to Schwab—not an instruction to surrender decision-making to an algorithm. Charley may make routine information and service tasks faster, while complex planning can still move to a human representative. The most important practical question will be which actions are enabled for a particular account and how the system asks for confirmation before completing them.
Schwab’s 2025 CEO letter also said AI should extend investing insights and guidance to more clients and deepen relationships. The company paired that AI strategy with plans for spot-cryptocurrency access beginning with Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2026, showing that its technology agenda sits alongside broader product expansion rather than replacing it.
