They answer different questions, and a screenshot alone cannot confirm that a request or transaction succeeded. If both visual appearance and service behavior matter, combine visual evidence with availability or functional checks.
What scheduled screenshots tell you
A scheduled screenshot is a visual record of a page at a particular time and viewport. Comparing captures can help a team spot rendered changes or give people before-and-after evidence. The capture itself is only evidence: change detection and alerts depend on the workflow or service configured around it.

An image cannot establish whether a backend request completed, a button worked, or a business transaction succeeded. It can show visible symptoms—for example, an error message or missing content—but does not explain the cause.

What synthetic monitoring checks
Synthetic monitoring runs periodic requests or scripted tests and records results. Depending on the check, it can cover endpoint availability, latency, page content, APIs, or browser-based user journeys, and can alert when a configured check fails. Not every synthetic check launches a browser or tests a complete transaction.

Lightweight endpoint checks
An HTTP or protocol check can provide broad, frequent coverage of whether an endpoint responds as expected. It is typically a better fit for basic availability than an elaborate browser script, but it may miss rendering defects and problems that appear only after a user interaction.
Browser checks and scripted journeys
A browser check can verify that a page renders or that expected content appears. A scripted journey can exercise selected actions, such as logging in or progressing through checkout. These checks can expose browser and flow failures that a status-code check may not detect, but they use more resources and require more maintenance. Reserve detailed scripts for flows that matter to revenue or user trust.

Choose by the question you need answered
| Need | Best starting point | What it does not establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| Did the rendered page change? | Scheduled screenshots or visual comparison | Whether the service, backend request, or user action worked |
| Is an endpoint responding broadly and frequently? | Lightweight synthetic uptime check | Whether a browser rendered the page correctly or a user journey completed |
| Does the page render or does a critical flow work? | Browser-based synthetic check or scripted journey | Anything outside the pages, actions, and conditions the script actually tests |
| Do both visual state and service behavior matter? | Combine screenshots with availability or functional assertions | Coverage beyond the checks and captures you configure |
How to evaluate a monitoring setup
- Signal: Decide whether you need appearance, availability, content, latency, or user-journey results.
- Coverage: Check supported browsers and probe locations, including whether public or private probes and regional requirements fit your needs. Provider coverage and regional rules vary.
- Cadence: Choose an interval appropriate to the risk and the cost of running checks. Screenshot frequency and history depend on the provider and configuration.
- Evidence and diagnosis: Find out what the service retains—screenshots, logs, metrics, or run results—and how an alert helps identify the failure.
- Maintenance: Account for the effort of keeping browser scripts and test data valid. A detailed journey is more resource-intensive to run and maintain than a simple endpoint check.
How common synthetic-monitoring approaches differ
These are examples of documented capabilities, not a ranking. Check each provider’s current documentation for plan availability, probe locations, retention, and configuration details.
| Service | Documented approach | Relevant qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Monitoring | Periodic simulated requests and scripted tests record outcomes and latency, with alert policies. Examples include login pages, ecommerce checkout, and third-party API calls. | Synthetic monitors can run from locations supported by uptime-check servers; check current data-residency documentation for regional requirements. |
| Amazon CloudWatch Synthetics | Scheduled canary scripts check endpoints and APIs. Browser-capable canaries can store UI screenshots and check availability and latency. | AWS documentation says canaries can run as often as once per minute; actual configuration and suitability depend on the workload. |
| New Relic | Offers scheduled HTTP pings, browser checks, and scripted browser journeys. | Its documentation describes pings as economical for broad availability, simple browser checks for real-render coverage, and scripted browser monitors as slower and more resource-intensive. |
| New Relic screenshot behavior | Simple and scripted browser checks can save screenshots. | By default, screenshots are saved only when a check fails. Scripted monitors can be instructed to capture one on each check; only the last screenshot taken is saved. This behavior is specific to New Relic’s documented setup. |
| Grafana Cloud Synthetic Monitoring | Scheduled checks from selected public or private probes provide metrics, logs, and alerting; supported checks include endpoints and protocols as well as scripted and browser checks. | Probe selection and check configuration determine the coverage. |
| Elastic Synthetics | Real-browser synthetic tests can repeat user actions such as login, add-to-cart, and checkout; results can be trended and alerted on. | The test only covers the actions and conditions defined in its script. |
ScreenshotNeo as a screenshot option
If the visual-evidence part of your setup calls for a screenshot API, ScreenshotNeo is one option to try first: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a free tier. Synthetic checks are still needed for availability and user-journey assertions.
For AI-assisted workflows, ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools. Its capture options include full-page shots, element selection, viewport and device settings, and custom waits; the exact available behavior is documented in its API documentation.

Or skip the browser setup
Make one GET request to request a screenshot. Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture and use your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
FAQ
Can a synthetic monitor also take screenshots?
Yes. Some providers offer screenshots as part of browser-capable checks, but whether and when images are retained depends on that provider’s behavior and your configuration.

Is a screenshot enough to monitor checkout?
No. A capture may show what appeared on screen, but confirming checkout requires a check that exercises and validates the relevant flow.
