A green scheduler health check does not prove that scheduled work is current. It usually confirms only that a scheduler component is responding; the expected run may still be missing, waiting, failing, producing invalid output, or finishing after the result is useful. Monitor the work itself—from expected occurrence through output freshness—as well as the scheduler’s heartbeat.
What a healthy scheduler check does—and does not—tell you
Keep four states distinct: component liveness, execution, correctness, and freshness. A scheduler can be alive while no run is created; a run can start but fail; a run can report success while producing the wrong result; and correct output can arrive too late for its consumers.

- Liveness: Is the scheduler component responding within its configured health threshold?
- Execution: Was the expected run created, started, and completed successfully?
- Correctness: Does the result satisfy workload-specific checks?
- Freshness: Is the result recent enough to meet the business deadline?
Apache Airflow’s health endpoint illustrates the distinction. Its stable documentation for Airflow 3.3.2 says scheduler status is based on the latest scheduler heartbeat. The documented default threshold is 30 seconds, and it can be configured; in a multi-scheduler installation, a healthy status can be returned when at least one scheduler is working. These are Airflow-specific details, not universal thresholds. The endpoint also reports component status fields, while its HTTP status code indicates whether the REST call worked; the code alone should not be treated as proof of application health. Airflow health checks
That leaves an important gap: a responsive scheduler heartbeat does not establish that a particular expected run completed or that its output is usable. Google’s SRE guidance likewise treats a nominally successful response with wrong content as an implicit error, and notes that end-to-end checks can catch incorrect content. How scheduled work can become overdue
An occurrence was skipped or delayed
Scheduler policies can intentionally prevent a run from starting. In Kubernetes CronJobs, startingDeadlineSeconds limits how late a Job may start after its scheduled time; after that limit, the occurrence is skipped. If the field is unset, there is no such start deadline. With concurrencyPolicy: Forbid, a new scheduled occurrence is skipped while the previous Job is still running. These policies make the difference between “scheduler is running” and “every expected occurrence ran” especially clear. Kubernetes CronJobs
A run exists but has not finished
A job may be queued, blocked behind an earlier run, waiting for worker capacity, retrying, or executing slowly. A scheduler heartbeat does not reveal whether a particular workload has started or met its own completion deadline. Airflow also distinguishes a DAG run’s logical date and data interval from its actual start and end times, so a logical schedule timestamp should not be mistaken for when processing happened. - Weekly programming – Create up to seven ON/OFF programs throughout the week to support varied schedules, and a random security feature alters settings by up to 30 minutes to create a lived-in appearance
- Switch upgrade – Replace single-pole or three-way switches equipped with a neutral wire to control LED, CFL, incandescent and halogen bulbs, and other permanently installed fixtures
- Daylight saving time – Optional setting accommodates clock changes in areas that observe daylight saving time without reprogramming your light timer
A run finished, but the output is wrong or stale
“Success” is meaningful only if the workload’s result is valid and timely. For example, a report refresh might complete without creating the expected partition, or a pipeline might write an empty result. Check an output property that reflects the job’s purpose, such as a new timestamp, expected partition, plausible row-count range, or domain-specific invariant. These checks must be chosen for the workload; no single output test applies to every scheduled job.

Build monitoring around the work, not only the process
Use separate signals so an alert identifies which stage has failed. Airflow’s command-line health checks for scheduler status and its run-level Deadline Alerts serve different purposes: one checks scheduler health, while the other can act when a DAG run exceeds a configured time threshold. Deadline Alerts were introduced in Airflow 3.1. Airflow Deadline Alerts

- Scheduler liveness: Track heartbeat age or the platform’s health endpoint to detect an unresponsive scheduler. Treat this as a component signal, not an end-to-end success condition.
- Expected-run arrival: Compare the schedule with the latest run created or started. Alert if an expected occurrence has not appeared within its allowed delay. On Kubernetes v1.32 and later, the CronJob controller adds an annotation to Jobs with their original scheduled time, which can help correlate a Job with its occurrence.
- Run start and completion: Record whether the run started, its outcome, and its duration. Alert separately for a missing start, failed completion, or run-level deadline breach.
- Output validity and freshness: Check that the result is present, meets a meaningful workload-specific condition, and is recent enough for consumers.
- Queue and capacity context: When starts or completions are late, inspect queue time, worker health, and constrained resources. Google’s SRE monitoring framework describes latency, traffic, errors, and saturation as four golden signals; adapt those concepts to scheduled workloads rather than treating them as a scheduler-specific checklist.
Where practical, make the monitor independent of the component it is checking. For example, an endpoint served by a webserver cannot diagnose the webserver if that webserver is unavailable. Airflow documents scheduler-specific alternatives to its webserver-served health endpoint; choose checks that still provide useful evidence when a monitored dependency fails. Airflow health checks
Set deadlines from the job’s usefulness window
There is no universal acceptable delay. Set thresholds according to how often the job is scheduled, how long it normally takes, the tolerance for retries, and when downstream users need the result. Decide in advance whether overdue work should be skipped, caught up, or run late. A late backup and a late report refresh may have very different value.

Kubernetes documents a controller check cadence of 10 seconds and warns that a startingDeadlineSeconds value below 10 seconds may prevent scheduling. Its documentation also says that if more than 100 schedules are missed in the relevant counting window, the controller does not start the Job and logs an error. These are Kubernetes CronJob behaviors, not general scheduler rules. CronJob scheduling is approximate, so Kubernetes recommends idempotent Jobs to account for circumstances in which an occurrence can be duplicated or omitted. Kubernetes CronJobs

Prefer stage-specific alerts over a single “scheduler unhealthy” alarm. A useful alert identifies the expected occurrence, the last successful output time, the current run state, and the deadline that was missed. That lets an operator distinguish a dead scheduler from a skipped occurrence, a backed-up worker, a failed run, or an invalid result.

- Missing occurrence: expected run has not been created or started within the allowed arrival delay.
- Execution issue: run failed, remains queued, or exceeded its completion deadline.
- Output issue: run reported success but validation failed or freshness is outside the useful window.
- Component issue: scheduler heartbeat is stale or the health check itself cannot reach its endpoint.
Include retry and recovery expectations in the alert policy. A check that relies on the same database, worker pool, webserver, or control plane as the workload may fail alongside it, and the check itself can also become silent. Treat monitoring as another system that needs an owner and an operational failure path.
