Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A scheduled job can succeed when you start it by hand and still fail in its scheduled environment. The reason is often a mismatch in PATH, working directory, dependencies, or lifecycle—not the task’s core logic. Test the same wrapper where it will run, then verify the result it is meant to produce.
Why a manual run does not prove a scheduled job works
An interactive shell supplies context that a scheduler may not: a fuller PATH, shell startup settings, a familiar working directory, and environment variables. A task that runs successfully from your terminal has only demonstrated that it works in that context.

In an account of a macOS publishing automation, quintetkit put the distinction this way: “When you change where something runs, run it once in the new place before believing anything you knew about it.” That is a practical rule of thumb, not an Apple recommendation.
What went wrong in one macOS publishing setup
The temporary loop disappeared after restart
The first version was a nohup loop launched from /tmp. After a restart, the process was gone and no new article appeared. The author received no error because the process that would have produced the log was no longer running. nohup can detach a process from a terminal hangup; this account is not evidence that it provides restart persistence.

launchd could not find Node
The next version used a launch agent with KeepAlive. On that machine, the author observed a launchd PATH of /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin, while Node was installed at /opt/homebrew/bin. The script worked in the interactive shell but could not locate Node when launched by the agent.
A Python reconciliation step kept running because its executable was available in /usr/bin. That partial success made the logs look healthy even though publishing was broken. The author fixed the problem by setting PATH in the scripts the scheduler could invoke. Those paths and results describe that particular machine and account; they are not universal macOS defaults for every setup.

A laptop sleep cycle disrupted the loop
After fixing PATH, the process remained alive in sleep 900 for nearly three hours while the laptop was suspended. In the author’s diagnosis, the loop’s sleep did not advance as expected through system suspension, delaying its repeated work. A loop that appears reliable while a machine is awake may therefore behave differently across sleep and wake.
Run one pass per scheduler trigger
Instead of keeping a while loop and sleep running, the author changed the script to perform one pass and configured launchd to trigger it on an interval, with RunAtLoad. This avoids relying on an in-process timer for periodic work in this particular laptop use case.

Apple’s archived launchd guide documents timed and calendar-based scheduling through keys such as StartInterval and StartCalendarInterval. Because that guide is archived, check the documentation and behavior for the macOS versions you support before relying on it in production: Apple’s launchd scheduled-jobs guide.
A user launch agent also has a lifecycle constraint: Apple’s guide says per-user agents are specific to a logged-in user and run only while that user is logged in. The guide distinguishes user agents from system-level daemons and their loading locations. Choose the job type based on whether work must run only in a user session or at the system level, and test the relevant login and logout behavior.

Verify the scheduled environment and lifecycle
- Run the actual wrapper as the scheduler will. Do not test only the inner command in your interactive shell. Check the executable path, working directory, dependencies, permissions, and environment variables the wrapper requires.
- Make dependencies explicit. Use absolute executable paths or set PATH in the script that launchd invokes. Confirm that every required command can be found without relying on shell startup files.
- Test the host conditions that matter. For a user agent, check behavior across login and logout. For a laptop, test sleep and wake. For a job expected to survive a restart, verify that it is registered and runs after reboot.
- Inspect the specific property you need to confirm. In quintetkit’s example,
launchctl listshowed a label and exit status but not the interval;launchctl printexposed a 900-second interval. These are example results, not a guarantee that every macOS version presents the same output. A command that omits a property does not prove that the property is absent.
Log activity, then check the intended result
Apple’s archived guide documents StandardOutPath and StandardErrorPath for directing a job’s output. Use durable, writable log locations when appropriate, and make sure errors from the actual task reach them. A log line or successful exit status is still not proof that the intended outcome happened: in the publishing example, a reconciliation step logged successful runs while publishing remained broken.

For example, record a success timestamp only after the important work completes, then alert if that timestamp becomes older than the acceptable interval. Choose the scheduling and monitoring approach that fits
| Decision | Approach | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Periodic execution | Scheduler-triggered one-pass job | It avoids a persistent loop and its in-process sleep assumptions. Confirm the trigger and host lifecycle you depend on. |
| Periodic execution | In-process loop with sleep | It keeps timing inside a long-lived process. The case described here encountered delay across laptop suspension. |
| Where the job runs | User launch agent | Apple’s archived guide says it runs for a specific logged-in user and only while that user is logged in. |
| Where the job runs | System-level daemon | Apple distinguishes daemons from user agents and documents separate loading locations. Select it only when the required system-level lifecycle fits the task. |
| How success is checked | Process or exit-status logging | Shows information about a run that occurred, but a successful subtask can mask failure of the intended result. |
| How success is checked | Freshness or heartbeat check | Can reveal that expected output has stopped updating, including when a job never starts. Define the expected interval and alert condition for your workload. |
What a successful test can—and cannot—establish
In the account, the final setup survived several suspends and one reboot. The author explicitly cautioned: “That is not proof.” A test across those conditions is useful evidence for that machine and configuration, not a guarantee that every future run will succeed.
