Yes—the private video claiming to show YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announcing monetization changes is a phishing scam. TeamYouTube warned on March 4, 2025, that the message uses an AI-generated face and voice to push viewers toward links that may steal credentials or install malware. Treat a private YouTube share as an attacker-controlled message, not as an official YouTube contact channel.
What the Neal Mohan video scam is
The campaign sends creators a private YouTube video that appears to feature Neal Mohan discussing supposed changes to monetization. The video’s private status, executive impersonation and money-related subject are designed to make the recipient act before checking the claim.

TeamYouTube’s Rob stated on March 4, 2025: “If a video is shared privately with you claiming to be from YouTube, the video is a phishing scam.” YouTube did not publish a campaign-specific victim count or loss total.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) described the broader technique on December 3, 2024: “Criminals use AI-generated videos to create believable depictions of public figures to bolster their fraud schemes.”

How the lure works
Authority replaces verification
A recognizable CEO gives the message apparent legitimacy. A convincing voice and likeness can make a creator feel that the request came from inside YouTube, even though the delivery method is not an official announcement channel.
Privacy creates pressure
A private share suggests exclusive or urgent information. Combined with a monetization theme, it encourages recipients to click immediately rather than compare the claim with a known YouTube or Google announcement.

The link completes the theft
The video itself is the bait. Links associated with the message can lead to phishing pages that request passwords, recovery codes or payment information, or to downloads that install malware.
How to compare the message with a legitimate notice

- Shadows that do not match the scene
- Unnatural movement, lag or a mismatch between voice and mouth movement
- Watermarks or other visual artifacts
- A voice that sounds slightly unlike the person being impersonated
These clues can help, but the FBI’s July 20, 2026 impersonation warning says AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it is often difficult to identify. Verification of the channel and destination is more dependable than judging video quality.
What to do if you receive the private video
- Do not click its links. Do not download files from the message.
- Do not enter information. Never provide a password, recovery code, payment detail or other sensitive data in response.
- Leave the message and verify independently. Open a known official YouTube or Google address by typing it yourself, then look for a matching announcement.
- Report it through YouTube’s reporting tools. Include the message and any associated account or link details available to you.
If you clicked the link or shared information
Stop interacting with the page and do not return through the message. If you entered a password, recovery code or payment information, treat that information as exposed: use the legitimate service’s site—not the message—to secure the account, and contact the relevant payment provider about unauthorized activity. Preserve the message, URL and transaction details for reporting.

For suspected financial or identity fraud, file a report with the legitimate www.ic3.gov site. IC3 asks complainants to include contact information, URLs, payment details and a description of the interaction.

The same playbook can impersonate executives, public officials or customer-support representatives in videos, live chats and promotional material. A familiar face is not proof of identity, and a private delivery is not proof of authorization. Verify the channel, domain, request and claim separately before taking any action.
