A task-scam operator reportedly lost 60 Bitcoin—worth about $4.8 million when reported—after thieves drained three newly purchased Ledger devices that had been physically modified before resale. The incident points to a supply-chain attack, not a demonstrated failure of Ledger’s cryptography or online systems.
What happened to the scammer’s Bitcoin?
Cointelegraph reported on October 15, 2026, citing blockchain-analysis firm Chainalysis, that a scammer lost 60 Bitcoin from three new Ledger hardware wallets. The coins were worth approximately $4.8 million at the time of the report. Funds from all three devices were drained into the same wallet.

The victim allegedly operated a “task scam.” According to the Chainalysis account quoted by Cointelegraph, people were paid to fake sales and reviews of legitimate products. Victims later saw a “negative balance” and were told to deposit their own money to receive payment. The report does not identify the exact Ledger model used.

Cointelegraph also described the wider tampered-device operation as having stolen more than $103.4 million from 530 addresses. That is an incident estimate reported by Cointelegraph, not a total published in Ledger’s own response.

How the tampered wallets captured recovery phrases
The attack depended on compromising devices before victims initialized them. Ledger said criminals bought genuine products, opened them, installed custom components and returned the devices to distribution through resellers in Southeast Asia.
Ledger described the parts as “custom-built hidden components designed to capture the recovery phrase during setup.” The Block’s technical account of Ledger’s Donjon investigation said the implant captured the 24-word recovery phrase and transmitted it over LTE using a provisioned eSIM.
The same account said the implant did not alter the wallet’s Secure Element or Ledger operating system. In other words, the device could appear to perform normal cryptographic operations while a separate hidden component copied the secret phrase during initial setup. Once attackers had the phrase, they could recreate the wallet elsewhere and sign transactions without possessing the physical device.

Ledger’s findings and what they do—and do not—establish
Ledger said it opened sample units from stores and warehouses during its investigation and found the examined devices clean. It also said it was working with law enforcement and the security community, screening stock and asking authorized resellers and distributors to suspend sales in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong.
Ledger’s official explanation is explicit: “There was no flaw in Ledger’s chip, operating system or servers. Ledger’s systems were not compromised. This was an attack on the distribution channel after the devices left our control.”
That statement distinguishes two different risks:
- Software or infrastructure compromise: a vulnerability in Ledger firmware, the Secure Element, servers or companion systems. Ledger says it found no such flaw in this incident.
- Physical and distribution compromise: a genuine product opened and modified after leaving Ledger’s control, then sold as if it were new. That is the mechanism Ledger and the technical reporting describe.
The reported loss figures should also be kept separate. The 60-Bitcoin loss and the more-than-$103.4-million operation total come from incident reporting and Chainalysis-related accounts. Ledger’s response confirms the hardware-implant investigation but does not publish the $103.4-million figure.

Is it safe to buy a Ledger hardware wallet?
A hardware wallet is only as trustworthy as the device’s provenance and the way its recovery phrase is handled. The incident does not show that every Ledger device is compromised, but it does show why an unknown distribution path creates a serious risk that packaging alone may not reveal.

|---|---|---|---|
| Direct from Ledger | Shortest chain of custody | Use Ledger’s current authenticity and setup guidance; initialize the device yourself | Preferred route for reducing reseller-tampering exposure |
| Authorized reseller | Acceptable when authorization and supply records are current | Confirm the seller’s authorization and follow current manufacturer instructions | Lower uncertainty than an unknown marketplace seller, but still requires inspection |
| Marketplace seller | May include several unknown intermediaries | Seller identity, return terms and chain of custody may be difficult to establish | Higher exposure to opened, substituted or modified stock |
| Unknown or used seller | Unverifiable | No reliable way to establish who handled the device or whether it was altered | Avoid for a wallet that will protect significant funds |
Do not treat a prewritten recovery phrase, a phrase supplied by a seller, or a phrase entered into a website or app as legitimate setup. Generate the phrase on the device, record it offline, and never share it with support staff, a seller or anyone claiming to help. A device that asks you to import a phrase supplied in the box should not be funded.

- Buy through an official or currently authorized channel. Keep the order confirmation, seller name and packaging until the device has passed setup and authenticity checks.
- Inspect the package and device before connecting funds. Look for signs of opening, replacement or unexplained accessories, but do not assume an intact seal proves the internal hardware is genuine.
- Install only the manufacturer’s current software from its official source. Do not use a download link supplied by a marketplace seller or a stranger.
- Initialize the wallet yourself. The device should generate the recovery phrase during setup. Write it down offline and verify each word on the device’s screen.
- Keep the phrase out of every online channel. Never photograph it, type it into a computer, store it in cloud notes or enter it on a support page.
- Start with a small test transaction. Confirm the receiving address on the device display and send only a small amount before using the wallet for larger balances.
These steps reduce ordinary setup mistakes and make a compromised distribution path less likely to succeed, but no visual inspection can guarantee that a hidden implant is absent. Provenance remains the most important control.

What to do if you bought from a third-party seller
If the wallet has never held funds
Do not initialize it with assets you cannot afford to lose. Contact the seller for a refund and consult Ledger’s current support guidance about authenticity and replacement. Buying a new device through an official or authorized channel is safer than trying to certify an uncertain unit yourself.
If the wallet already holds funds
Assume the recovery phrase may be exposed if the purchase route or device history is questionable. Obtain a trusted replacement through an official or authorized channel, generate a completely new recovery phrase on that device, and transfer assets to addresses derived from the new phrase. Verify every destination address on the replacement device and account for network fees. Do not enter the old phrase into the replacement device or any website; use the old wallet only to authorize the transfer.

Stop communicating and do not provide it. Hardware-wallet support does not need the phrase to diagnose a device. Treat requests for the phrase, a “negative balance” payment, remote-access software or an urgent upgrade as signs of a scam.
Why this incident matters beyond Ledger
The case shows that hardware security includes manufacturing, warehousing, shipping and retail—not just code and chips. A wallet can use a secure element and still be unsafe if an attacker adds an independent component before the buyer receives it. For high-value holdings, document the purchase channel, initialize devices in a controlled environment and keep recovery material offline. The central lesson from the Asia Express report is not that every Ledger is compromised; it is that an unknown reseller can become the weakest link.
