Use SaxonJS when the transformation must run in a browser or in a JavaScript/Node.js runtime. Use server-side Saxon when XML should remain on a controlled backend or you need Java, .NET or native integration, schema-aware processing, XQuery, XML Schema validation or enterprise server APIs. There is no universal speed winner. The decision is architectural: where data can execute, which features your stylesheets require, how compilation is packaged, and how much operational control you need.
What SaxonJS and server-side Saxon actually are
SaxonJS
SaxonJS is Saxonica’s JavaScript implementation of XSLT 3.0 and XPath 3.1. Saxonica describes it as “a high-performance XSLT 3.0 processor that runs either in the browser, or on Node.js.” It can transform XML and JSON, and it includes interactive XSLT extensions intended for web applications. The runtime is designed for JavaScript environments rather than for the Java Virtual Machine or .NET.

Browser execution lets a page transform data locally after the required runtime and compiled stylesheet have been delivered. Node.js execution puts the same JavaScript-oriented approach in a service, command-line tool or build pipeline. Saxonica documents npm packages for SaxonJS 2 and for the SaxonJS 3 preview line. SaxonJS 2.7 is listed on Saxonica’s JavaScript downloads page with a release date of 17 October 2024.

| Family | Runtime | Typical use | Edition notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SaxonJ | Java | JVM applications, batch jobs and backend services | HE, PE and EE editions |
| SaxonCS | .NET | Applications built for the .NET platform | Server-side Saxon APIs for .NET deployments |
| SaxonC | Native code with C/C++, PHP and Python bindings | Native services and applications that need language bindings | Useful where a JVM or .NET runtime is not the host environment |
SaxonJ-HE is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. SaxonJ-PE and SaxonJ-EE are commercial editions that require license-key activation. The edition determines more than packaging: it controls access to schema-aware processing, enterprise APIs and other capabilities.
Quick decision: which one fits your architecture?
| Requirement | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Transform XML in a web page without sending the document to a server | SaxonJS in the browser | It is built to execute in browser JavaScript and supports XSLT 3.0. |
| A Node.js application already owns the transformation pipeline | SaxonJS for Node.js | You avoid introducing a JVM or .NET service solely for XSLT. |
| Java is already the production runtime | SaxonJ | It integrates directly with JVM APIs, deployment controls and monitoring. |
| .NET is the established platform | SaxonCS | It keeps transformation inside the existing .NET service boundary. |
| C/C++, PHP or Python must call a native processor | SaxonC | Native bindings are available for those environments. |
| Schema-aware XSLT, XQuery 3.1 or XML Schema 1.1 validation is required | Server-side Saxon-EE | These enterprise capabilities are documented for Saxon-EE and are not listed for SaxonJS. |
| Untrusted or sensitive XML must not reach a client | Server-side Saxon | The backend can keep source data, stylesheets and access policies inside its controlled boundary. |
That table is a starting point, not a performance ranking. A Node.js service using SaxonJS may be a better operational fit than Java for one team, while a browser transformation may be unacceptable for confidential data in another.
Where the transformation runs and what changes
Browser-side processing
With SaxonJS in a browser, the user’s device downloads JavaScript, a compiled stylesheet and the input data (or obtains the data through browser-permitted requests). Transformation then consumes the browser’s CPU and memory. This can produce responsive, interactive XML-driven interfaces and can reduce round trips for repeated local interactions.
Recommended Free Tools
- Users may be able to inspect delivered input documents and compiled stylesheets.
- Content-security policy, cross-origin rules and other browser controls can limit network access.
- Device speed, available memory, tab throttling and browser differences become part of the runtime environment.
- Large documents or confidential records may be unsuitable for client-side execution.
These are design consequences, not universal security or throughput measurements. Saxonica’s product material does not establish a single browser security posture or a numeric browser-versus-server speed advantage.
Node.js processing
SaxonJS for Node.js keeps the JavaScript deployment model while moving execution into a service or script you control. It is a practical choice when the surrounding application, package management, observability and deployment pipeline are already Node-based. You still need to plan memory limits, concurrency, error handling and stylesheet packaging; Node.js does not automatically provide the governance of a dedicated transformation server.
Java, .NET and native processing
Server-side Saxon is appropriate when a backend already owns the data and transformation. SaxonJ can run inside Java services, SaxonCS inside .NET applications, and SaxonC through native-language bindings. The service can restrict filesystem and network access, centralize logs, apply resource limits and keep source XML off the client.

Server-side products also expose platform-specific APIs. Saxon-EE is documented with schema-aware XSLT 3.0, XQuery 3.1, XPath APIs and XML Schema 1.1 validation. Those capabilities matter when XSLT is part of a larger governed integration or validation workflow rather than only a presentation step.

Standards and feature differences
Saxonica’s Saxon 13 feature matrix marks the mandatory XSLT 3.0 basic processor as available in Java SaxonJ, .NET SaxonCS, Native SaxonC and JavaScript SaxonJS. The same basic category lists features including try/catch, iterate, accumulators, maps, named modes, content value templates and extended patterns.
| Capability | SaxonJS | Server-side Saxon basic processors | Server-side Saxon-EE |
|---|---|---|---|
| XSLT 3.0 core processing | Available | Available in the listed SaxonJ, SaxonCS and SaxonC basic processors | Available |
| XPath 3.1 | Supported | Supported by the relevant server-side processors | Supported |
| XML and JSON input | Supported | Depends on the host API and edition | Supported through server-side APIs |
| Schema-aware XSLT | Not listed in the Saxon 13 matrix | Not a basic-processor capability | Available |
| XQuery 3.1 | Not positioned as a general SaxonJS feature | Edition and platform dependent | Available |
| XML Schema 1.1 validation | Not listed | Not a basic-processor capability | Available |
| Interactive web extensions | Included for web applications | Not the focus of the server products | Server APIs are the focus |
“Supports XSLT 3.0” therefore does not mean that every processor exposes the same surrounding APIs. Check the exact feature matrix for the edition and platform you will deploy.
Is SaxonJS a replacement for Saxon-EE?
No. SaxonJS can replace a server-side processor for a workload whose requirements are XSLT/XPath execution in JavaScript, but it is not a drop-in replacement for every Saxon-EE deployment.
Saxon-EE is aimed at enterprise server processing and documents schema-aware XSLT, XQuery 3.1, XPath APIs and XML Schema 1.1 validation. SaxonJS is focused on running compiled XSLT and XPath in browser or Node.js environments. The Saxon 13 matrix does not list schema-aware XSLT for SaxonJS, and Saxonica positions the JavaScript product around web and JavaScript execution rather than as a complete substitute for server-side APIs.
If an existing application relies on Java-specific extension APIs, schema validation, XQuery modules, controlled access to files and network resources, or server governance, moving only the stylesheet to SaxonJS will not preserve that architecture. You would need to redesign those dependencies, move the work to Node.js, or retain a server-side processor.

Compilation, SEF files and deployment packaging
SaxonJS executes compiled Stylesheet Export Files (SEF), rather than treating a browser as a full replacement for the server-side compilation toolchain. Compilation compatibility is therefore part of version management.
- Choose the SaxonJS major line. SaxonJS 2 and the SaxonJS 3 preview line have different compatibility requirements. Record the exact runtime version in your build metadata.
- Compile the stylesheet. SaxonJS 2 SEFs can be produced with Saxon-EE 10.0 or later, Saxon-EE 11.3 or later, or with the XX compiler integrated into SaxonJS 2 for Node.js. SaxonJS 3 requires a compatible Saxon-EE compiler or compilation by its internal Node.js compiler.
- Package the SEF with the application. Deploy the compiled file and the matching SaxonJS runtime together. Do not assume that a SEF produced for one major line will load in another.
- Test cold and warm startup. Measure the time to load the runtime and SEF separately from the time to transform a document already in memory.
- Pin and verify upgrades. When upgrading SaxonJS, the compiler or Saxon-EE, regenerate or validate SEFs and run representative transformations before rollout.
Saxonica states that the Saxon-EE compiler is faster and produces smaller, faster executable code than the SaxonJS compiler. That is a vendor statement, not an independent head-to-head benchmark for your documents. It can influence a build pipeline, but it should not be turned into a claim that every SaxonJS transformation will run faster or slower than server-side Saxon.
Licensing and edition selection
| Option | License or access model | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| SaxonJ-HE | Mozilla Public License 2.0 open source | Whether the HE feature set covers your stylesheet and deployment needs |
| SaxonJ-PE | Commercial; license-key activation required | Current Saxonica terms, activation method and permitted environments |
| SaxonJ-EE | Commercial; license-key activation required | Enterprise features, server count and current licensing conditions |
| SaxonJS | Free to use but not open source, according to Saxonica’s platform overview | Whether an annual subscription is needed for source-code access or tools, and the current terms |
Licensing details can change. Confirm the current Saxonica terms before committing a production architecture, especially if you need source access, redistribution rights, commercial support or a particular compiler.

Security, data locality and operational control
The first security question is not “Which processor is safer?” but “Where is the source allowed to exist?” Browser execution necessarily delivers the input, or enough information to obtain it, to a user-controlled environment. A backend transformation can keep records, credentials and internal stylesheets inside a service boundary.
- Use browser SaxonJS for data that is suitable for client exposure and benefits from local interaction.
- Use server-side Saxon for regulated, confidential or very large documents, or when policy requires centralized auditing.
- For either runtime, define limits for document size, recursion, execution time, memory and external resource access.
- Log stylesheet and processor versions so a failed transformation can be reproduced.
- Decide how errors are returned: a browser can show a user-facing diagnostic, while a service may need a structured error, retry policy and alert.
These controls are architectural responsibilities. The product descriptions do not provide a universal security certification or a guaranteed isolation boundary for every deployment.

- Use representative inputs. Include the smallest, median and largest XML or JSON documents, plus stylesheets that exercise maps, accumulators, grouping and extension calls if you use them.
- Measure compilation separately. Record SEF generation, SEF loading and transformation time. A one-time build cost should not be compared with every-request execution.
- Test cold and warm states. Capture first-start latency, repeated transformations and cache behavior.
- Include serialization and transfer. Browser tests must include network download and parsing where those costs occur; server tests should include request, response and serialization costs.
- Vary concurrency. Test the expected number of simultaneous requests and observe CPU, memory, queueing and failure behavior.
- Test real devices and runtimes. Browser results can vary by browser engine, operating system and device. Node.js and JVM results depend on runtime versions and host resources.
- Define success criteria. Choose thresholds for latency, throughput, memory and error rate before reviewing the results.
The result may be mixed: SaxonJS could win on data that never needs a server round trip, while a server-side processor could win when a large document would otherwise cross the network or run on a low-powered device.
A practical selection process
Step 1: Identify the execution boundary
Write down whether the transformation must run in a browser, Node.js, Java, .NET or a native process. If more than one target is required, decide whether you will maintain one stylesheet with portable features or separate deployment-specific layers.
Step 2: Classify the data
Mark each input as public, user-specific, confidential or regulated. Browser execution is usually appropriate only when sending that class of data to the client is acceptable.
Step 3: Check required features
Inventory schema-aware processing, XQuery, XML Schema validation, extension APIs, filesystem access and network access. If any is mandatory and absent from SaxonJS, select the server-side family and edition that documents it.
Step 4: Select the edition and license
For a Java application that needs only the basic processor, evaluate SaxonJ-HE first. Move to PE or EE when a documented commercial feature or support requirement justifies it. For JavaScript, confirm whether SaxonJS’s free-use terms and optional subscription meet your source-access and tooling needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStep 5: Build and test the packaging path
Produce SEFs with a compatible compiler, pin versions and test deployment from a clean environment. Include rollback instructions for both runtime and compiled stylesheet.
Best Value
Step 6: Operate the chosen runtime
Set resource limits, instrument transformation duration and failures, and document how an operator can identify the processor, edition, stylesheet version and input class involved in an incident.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Assuming browser execution is automatically cheaper
Moving CPU work to the browser can reduce server compute, but it may increase download size, client battery use and support complexity. Measure the complete user journey, not only the transformation function.
Treating SaxonJS as a full Saxon-EE clone
Check schema awareness, XQuery, XML Schema validation and platform APIs explicitly. If your application depends on them, retain or redesign around a server-side processor.

A stylesheet that compiles successfully is not necessarily deployable with every runtime version. Keep compiler and runtime versions aligned, and regenerate SEFs when compatibility guidance requires it.
Comparing warm server runs with cold browser loads
Include runtime download, SEF loading, parsing, network transfer and startup in the same performance model. Otherwise, the comparison answers a different question from the one users experience.
Choosing an edition by name alone
“HE,” “PE” and “EE” are not interchangeable labels for every platform. Map each required feature to the current Saxonica matrix and licensing terms for the exact family you plan to deploy.
Bottom line
Choose SaxonJS for browser transformations, interactive XML-driven interfaces and Node.js applications where JavaScript is already the natural runtime. Choose server-side Saxon when data must stay behind the service boundary, when Java, .NET or native integration matters, or when schema-aware XSLT, XQuery, XML Schema validation and enterprise APIs are requirements. Validate the choice with a workload-specific benchmark and a versioned compilation pipeline; neither the product descriptions nor the available evidence establish a universal performance winner.
