But veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia said the Olympic berth—not the historic medal—had been the team’s main objective because it would give India more time to prepare.
Why Savita put Olympic qualification first
In comments attributed to her by PTI after the final, Savita said the team had focused on earning direct qualification for LA 2028. India’s failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics through the qualifiers had influenced that priority, according to the report.

“We knew it had been 44 years since India last won gold at the Asian Games, but more than history, our focus was on qualifying directly for the Olympics.”

Savita said the direct berth would leave the team with about one and a half years to prepare for the Games, and expressed hope that India could go to Los Angeles aiming for a medal. That timeframe is her estimate as reported after the final, not a separately specified preparation schedule.
