Satlyt has raised a reported $8 million seed round to help put software to work on computing hardware already aboard spacecraft. That is not the same as building data centres in orbit: its current focus is edge computing on individual satellites, while linking compute across multiple spacecraft is a longer-term ambition.
What Satlyt’s $8 million round is funding
TechCabal reported on October 1, 2026, that Satlyt raised $8 million in seed funding led by non sibi ventures. The report named TLCOM, Antler, Slauson & Co., Launch Africa Ventures, Enza Capital, Askya Investment Partners, Demos, BAG Collective, Gaingels and Axian Investment among the participants, along with others. These round details come from news reporting rather than a primary funding announcement cited in the coverage.
According to TechCabal, Satlyt plans to use the proceeds to expand its engineering and customer-delivery teams and deploy its software across additional spacecraft. The report did not provide a detailed allocation of the money or a deployment timetable.
What “virtual data centres in space” means
Satlyt is described as building software for computing hardware that is already installed aboard spacecraft operated by other organizations. The idea is to let operators run applications and process data onboard, rather than relying only on sending information back to Earth for processing. Founder and CEO Rama Afullo put the current focus plainly: “We are not trying to offset data centres right now. The goal is edge compute for satellite systems.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the software does now
The present emphasis is onboard edge computing on individual spacecraft. Afullo also said, “Running applications on existing spacecraft gives operators a way to do more with the computing hardware they already have in orbit.” This is a software approach to using existing orbital hardware; the reporting does not describe Satlyt as a satellite manufacturer or as having launched purpose-built data-centre satellites.
What the longer-term vision adds
The virtual-data-centre idea points toward coordinating computing resources across multiple spacecraft, potentially making them function more like a shared network. That is described as a longer-term goal, not an operating multi-spacecraft system today. So the short answer is: Satlyt is currently trying to enable more computing on existing satellites, not building a conventional data centre in orbit.

What the reported Gemma demonstration showed
The Condia reported on October 2, 2026, that Satlyt deployed Google’s Gemma model aboard a Momentus spacecraft in September 2026. The report said the demonstration reduced a critical system-error transmission by over 60% and telemetry by up to 97%. Those are company-attributed results as reported by The Condia; independent technical validation of the figures was not established in the available coverage. They should therefore be read as claims about a reported demonstration, not as independently confirmed performance benchmarks.
How this differs from launching data-centre hardware
| Approach | What it means | Status in the reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Satlyt’s current focus | Software uses computing hardware already aboard a spacecraft to run applications or process data onboard. | Described as the present focus; the reports do not provide comparable cost, power, or reliability figures. |
| Purpose-built orbital data-centre hardware | Spacecraft or hardware designed specifically to provide data-centre capacity in orbit. | Not described as Satlyt’s current activity; the coverage supplies no comparable engineering or cost figures. |
| Virtual compute network across spacecraft | Software coordinates compute resources on multiple spacecraft as a shared network. | Presented as a longer-term ambition, not an established operating network. |
The reporting does not include enough comparable engineering, cost, power, or reliability data to rank these approaches. The distinction that matters for the headline is the difference between using existing onboard computers now and building or coordinating a larger orbital computing system later.

What is known about Satlyt’s NASA-related work
TechCabal reports that Satlyt is working with the University of Houston on delay-tolerant networking related to NASA’s Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. NASA’s SBIR/STTR program page explains the general purpose of those programs, but it does not independently verify Satlyt’s specific award or partnership. The available reporting does not establish further award details.
