Satisfactory: The Board Game vs. the PC Game: What’s Different?

The short answer: the PC version is a first-person, open-world factory-building game that you can play alone or in online co-op. Satisfactory: The Board Game translates that premise into a competitive tabletop engine-building game for one to four players. It keeps exploration, resource discovery, factory expansion, production lines, energy management, technology development and the Space Elevator, but turns a free-form digital sandbox into a race against other players.

The tabletop edition was announced for a Gamefound campaign on October 13, 2026. That date is now past, but an announced campaign date does not by itself confirm that the campaign launched or that a retail edition is available. Its preview rulebook is explicitly a work in progress, so the final rules, components, prices and delivery terms can still change.

At a glance: the practical differences

Comparison PC game Board game
Format First-person open-world video game Tabletop game developed and produced by MOOD Publishing with Coffee Stain Studios
Players Single-player or online co-op; Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer One to four players, presented as a competitive game with a solo option
Main activity Explore an alien planet, gather materials, build factories and automate logistics Discover resource locations, place factories, optimize production, manage energy and complete milestones
Automation Belts, trucks, trains and pipes operate continuously in a 3D world Machines, conveyor belts and production choices are represented through tabletop engine building
Progression Ongoing construction and automation in a large explorable world Technology, projects and milestones lead toward completing the Space Elevator
Scale Steam describes a 30 km² alien world An abstraction of the digital game designed to fit a tabletop session
Status Released on Steam on September 10, 2024 Campaign announced for October 13, 2026; preview rules are not final

The most important difference is not the presence of factories; both versions are about building and improving production systems. It is the structure around those systems. The PC game gives you a persistent world and freedom to build wherever you choose. The tabletop version gives each player a competitive puzzle with shared timing, finite actions and a clear race to an objective.

What the PC game actually offers

A first-person factory sandbox

Coffee Stain describes Satisfactory as a “first-person open-world factory building game, with a dash of exploration and combat.” You move through the planet directly, choose construction sites, place machines and connect them into a functioning industrial network. The first-person viewpoint makes layout, terrain and travel part of the play experience rather than merely presentation.

Steam lists the game as released on September 10, 2024, with single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer features. The store description gives the alien world a size of 30 km²; that is a figure supplied by Steam, not an independently measured map area.

Exploration is part of the production problem

Resources are not simply abstract inputs on a menu. You explore the planet to locate materials, then decide how far a factory should be from those deposits and how supplies will reach it. Vehicles and traversal tools support that travel. Expansion therefore creates logistical decisions: a convenient site may be short on resources, while a productive site may require a more elaborate transport network.

Automation continues after you leave

The digital game’s defining loop is building a line that keeps operating. Conveyor belts carry items between machines; trucks and trains move materials over longer distances; pipes handle fluids. As your operation grows, you can revisit it, increase throughput, remove bottlenecks and redesign parts that no longer meet demand. The world remains available for further construction rather than ending when one project is completed.

Solo and co-op have the same open world

You can play alone or invite others into the same industrial world. The PC game’s published feature list describes online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. That means cooperation is a central way to approach the digital version: players can divide exploration, construction, transport and optimization work instead of racing to prevent one another from reaching a goal.

What the announced board game is designed to be

A competitive tabletop engine builder

MOOD Publishing and Coffee Stain Studios describe the adaptation as a competitive sandbox tabletop game for one to four players. Each player develops a production engine, but the announced framing is a race: complete projects and milestones, develop technologies, and finish the Space Elevator to pursue the Employee of the Month outcome.

One player is supported, but the current description does not present the game as cooperative. The safe distinction is solo or competitive multiplayer, not co-op. The final solo rules are also subject to change because the available rulebook is marked as a work in progress.

Exploration becomes information and positioning

Rather than walking through a continuous 3D landscape, players explore the tabletop world to identify resource locations. Finding a deposit matters because it determines what a factory can produce and where expansion makes sense. The physical map and available spaces turn the digital game’s free placement into a more bounded decision about timing, access and efficiency.

Factories are built as production systems

The announced activities include placing and expanding factories, optimizing production lines with machines and conveyor belts, and producing increasingly complex parts. On a table, those choices are represented by the components and rules of an engine builder rather than by a continuously simulated belt network. The goal is still to turn basic resources into more valuable outputs, but the player manipulates a discrete set of options during a turn.

Energy is an explicit balancing problem

Energy production and consumption are specifically called out in the tabletop design. That gives the board game a constraint that is easy to track in a compact system: adding or upgrading production is useful only if the player can support it with enough energy. In the PC game, power is also part of factory planning, but it is experienced through the construction and operation of a live industrial network.

Projects, milestones and the Space Elevator provide a finish line

The tabletop game uses projects and milestones to organize progress and leads players toward completing the Space Elevator. This is a major structural change from the open-ended PC experience. Instead of deciding when to stop building in a world that can continue indefinitely, players have a shared competitive objective that determines who reaches the end condition first or earns the strongest result under the final rules.

The biggest differences, explained

1. Cooperation versus competition

In the PC version, friends can work in the same world and contribute to one factory. The board game’s announced format is competitive. You may be pursuing similar technologies and production goals, but the design is about outperforming other players in the race to the Space Elevator. A solo mode exists in the player-count range, yet that does not make multiplayer co-op.

2. A continuous world versus a bounded tabletop system

The PC game lets you roam through a large alien environment, choose a location and build at whatever scale your computer and the game world allow. A board game must express those choices with a map, components and turn structure. The tabletop version therefore abstracts the world: exploration reveals useful locations, placement is more constrained, and production is resolved through rules rather than a simulation running in real time.

3. Physical automation versus represented automation

Digital belts, trucks, trains and pipes can run continuously and expose problems visually. You can watch an item move, identify a backed-up belt and rebuild the line. In the board game, machines and conveyor belts are part of the engine you assemble and optimize through available actions and components. The theme remains recognizable, but the tactile system cannot reproduce every belt segment, vehicle route or fluid calculation from the PC world.

4. Open-ended construction versus a race to an objective

The PC game’s satisfaction comes from continuing to expand, redesign and automate. The announced board game adds a competitive endpoint: milestones, projects and the Space Elevator. That gives a tabletop session a defined arc and makes timing matter. Building the most elaborate factory is not automatically the point if another player completes the required objective first.

5. Long-form sandbox versus a session-sized abstraction

MOOD’s September 30, 2026 community update says that Satisfactory can “easily be 200 hours of building, optimizing, and rebuilding,” and that the tabletop design had to abstract that experience into something playable “in around two hours.” Those figures are the publisher’s design framing, not a verified final playtime or an independent measurement. The preview rules should not be treated as proof of the final session length.

What the board game keeps from Satisfactory

  • Planetary exploration: players search the world for resource locations before deciding how to develop them.
  • Resource chains: basic materials are turned into more complex parts through connected production steps.
  • Factory placement and expansion: where and when you build remains strategically important.
  • Machines and conveyors: the announced design uses familiar industrial imagery to represent production optimization.
  • Energy management: production must be balanced against available power.
  • Technology and milestones: advancement is organized through development goals rather than only through free construction.
  • The Space Elevator: it is the central announced objective and the basis for the competitive race.

What changes is the degree of freedom. The digital game lets you keep adding infrastructure to a persistent world. The tabletop game selects the parts of that fantasy that can create meaningful decisions within a finite rules system.

Is the board game co-op like the PC game?

No—not according to the current announcement. The PC game supports solo play and online co-op, while the board game is described as competitive for one to four players. The tabletop version may share a theme and many systems with the digital game, but multiplayer interaction is fundamentally different: PC players can collaborate on one factory, whereas board-game players are trying to complete their own objectives ahead of opponents.

If you want a shared construction project with friends, the PC version is the one whose published feature list explicitly supports that experience. If you want each participant to build an engine while competing over progress and the Space Elevator, the announced tabletop format is the closer fit.

How the tabletop preview should be interpreted

MOOD’s October 8 campaign update included a how-to-play video, a Tabletop Simulator preview and a work-in-progress rulebook. The publisher cautioned that the rules still required changes and clarification. It also described the preview as a small taste of the whole game.

That qualification matters when evaluating screenshots, component lists or explanations based on the preview. They show the direction of the design, not a guaranteed final ruleset. Turn order, resource values, solo procedures, scoring, component quantities and the exact Space Elevator condition can change before publication. A preview is useful for understanding the concept, but it should not be used as a final product specification.

Campaign, pledge and retail status

The announced campaign date

The publisher announced a Gamefound campaign for October 13, 2026. Because an announced date is not the same as a verified live campaign, readers should check the official campaign page for its current state, pledge terms, shipping information and delivery estimates. The available evidence does not establish a confirmed retail release or an Amazon listing.

The collector pledge

An October 9 pledge update described a collector tier with miniatures, an additional biome, deluxe components, a Space Elevator miniature and more ways to play. Indexed campaign text listed €295 for that pledge. That is a campaign price reported in the update, not a guaranteed retail price; taxes, shipping, currency conversion, availability and later revisions can change the amount.

What to verify before backing

  1. Confirm that the Gamefound campaign is live rather than relying on the announced date.
  2. Read the current rulebook status and note which rules or components are still provisional.
  3. Check what the selected pledge actually includes, especially miniatures, the additional biome and deluxe components.
  4. Review shipping regions, shipping charges, taxes, estimated fulfillment and the publisher’s cancellation terms.
  5. Compare the final pledge total with the eventual retail price only after a retail edition is formally announced.

Which version fits your preferred way to play?

Choose the PC game if you want freedom and ongoing construction

  • You prefer a first-person view and direct control over where every machine and route goes.
  • You want to explore a large world and keep expanding after completing an objective.
  • You want the option to build alone or cooperate online with friends.
  • You enjoy watching belts, trucks, trains and pipes operate continuously and troubleshooting bottlenecks in real time.

Watch the board game if you want a competitive tabletop puzzle

  • You prefer a one-to-four-player physical game with a clear competitive endpoint.
  • You like optimizing an engine through discrete choices, technologies and milestones.
  • You want exploration and factory planning without running a persistent 3D world.
  • You are comfortable with a developing product whose preview rules and campaign details may change.

The two formats are not interchangeable versions of the same session. The PC game is an expansive construction sandbox; the board game is an abstraction intended to turn that fantasy into a focused contest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: what is really different?

Satisfactory on PC is about inhabiting an alien world, selecting your own building sites and gradually turning raw materials into an automated industrial network. Its social model supports cooperation, and its world remains open for as much redesign as you want.

The announced board game keeps the recognizable ingredients but changes the experience at every structural level: it is tabletop rather than first-person, competitive rather than co-op, bounded rather than persistent, and organized around milestones and a race to the Space Elevator. It may be the better match for players who want a concentrated engine-building contest, while the PC game remains the choice for unrestricted exploration and factory construction. Because the tabletop rulebook and campaign details are still subject to change, treat the published design as an announced direction until the final rules and availability are confirmed.
