Satisfactory Server Hosting Compared: Self-Hosted vs Rented

Self-host if you already have an always-on 64-bit Windows or Linux machine, can configure your router and firewall, and want unrestricted control of saves, settings, and mods. Rent a server if you want deployment, public reachability, backups, and restarts handled for you and accept a recurring bill plus whatever limits the provider imposes.

The practical choice is not simply “cheap versus expensive.” Compare the CPU’s single-thread performance, available RAM, SSD storage, backup and restore tools, server location, file or SFTP access, mod policy, update controls, recovery options, and support. Coffee Stain’s dedicated-server tool is designed to keep a factory available when friends are offline, but the best hosting method depends on who will operate the machine between play sessions.

What a Satisfactory dedicated server does

A dedicated server runs the game world as a separate process rather than tying it to one player’s active game session. Players connect to that world while the host process continues running, so construction can remain available when the usual host is away. Coffee Stain Studios’ 2021 Epic Games Store listing describes the purpose directly: “Our Dedicated Server tool gives players the ability to host their own dedicated servers, meaning you can keep building your factory even if your friends aren’t online!”

You can run that process on a computer in your home or on a machine rented from a hosting company. The game software is broadly the same; what changes is who supplies the hardware, network path, storage, maintenance, and access to files.

Self-hosted versus rented: the decision at a glance

The table below describes decision tendencies, not laboratory benchmarks. Actual performance depends on the CPU generation, save size, player count, internet connection, server location, and the provider’s configuration.

Decision factor Self-hosted Rented
Setup time Longer: install the server, configure the operating system, firewall, router, service startup, and backups. Shorter: a control panel usually provisions the instance, but you still need to configure the game and players.
Recurring cost No hosting subscription; you carry hardware ownership, electricity, maintenance, and replacement costs. Monthly or other recurring charge; the exact price depends on the current plan and resource allocation.
Existing hardware and electricity Uses your machine and household power; an already-on computer can make incremental cost low. Provider supplies the machine and power, so your home system need not remain online.
CPU, RAM, and storage allocation You choose the components and can upgrade them, subject to the machine and budget. Limited to the plan; verify CPU generation, memory, storage type, and upgrade path before ordering.
Network and geographic latency Depends on your broadband upload, carrier-grade NAT status, router, and the distance to your home. Depends on the provider’s data-center location, peering, and network quality; choose a location close to most players.
Save backups You design, automate, test, and retain backups. May include scheduled snapshots and restore tools; confirm retention and whether you can download a copy.
File and SFTP access Full operating-system and game-directory access. Varies from full SFTP or file-manager access to a restricted panel.
Mod compatibility Best access to the files and versions required by a modded setup. Depends on the host’s file access, supported branch, and mod policy; support may be limited.
Update control You choose when to update and can stage a copy first. Panel tools may simplify updates, but provider images or automatic updates can reduce control.
Restart and recovery You configure a service manager, watchdog, and remote access, then troubleshoot failures yourself. Most panels offer start, stop, restart, and crash recovery; verify what happens after a host outage.
Provider support Your support is documentation, community help, and your own troubleshooting. Support can help with platform issues, but many hosts do not support custom mods or game-specific problems.

Hardware and operating-system requirements

Use the published Windows figures as a floor, not a promise of identical performance for every save. Coffee Stain’s 2021 listing gives these minimum and recommended configurations:

Configuration Operating system Processor Memory Storage
Minimum listed for Windows Windows 10 64-bit Intel Core i5-3570-class, four cores 8 GB RAM 20 GB available space
Recommended listed for Windows Windows 11 64-bit AMD Ryzen 5 5600X- or Intel i5-12400-class, six physical cores 16 GB RAM 20 GB on an SSD

The Satisfactory Wiki’s current dedicated-server guidance broadens that advice to a recent x86-64 CPU, at least 8 GB of RAM, and broadband internet. It calls for 16 GB when the save is large or the server has more than four players. Linux is also supported as a server platform, provided the machine is 64-bit and meets the software’s current requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret the CPU requirement

A high core count alone does not guarantee a smooth server. Factory simulation work can be sensitive to single-thread performance, so compare the generation and per-core speed of candidate CPUs rather than buying solely by total core count. The recommended six-physical-core examples provide headroom for the operating system and other services, but the published figures do not establish a universal player-count limit or frame-time target.

Memory and storage planning

Eight gigabytes is the listed baseline. Choose 16 GB when the world has a large build, when more than four people will play, or when the machine will run other services. Keep the server and save files on SSD storage; the listing specifies 20 GB of SSD space for the recommended configuration. Reserve additional capacity for operating-system updates, logs, temporary files, multiple save backups, and any mod packages. A “1TB SSD” is a sensible search phrase for a self-hosting hardware checklist, but no particular brand or model is required.

How to self-host safely

Self-hosting gives you control, but it also makes you the administrator. Complete these steps before inviting players.

  1. Choose a machine. Use a 64-bit Windows or Linux computer that can remain powered on. Start with the published baseline, select a recent x86-64 CPU, and provide 16 GB RAM for a larger save or a group above four players. Wired Ethernet is preferable to Wi-Fi for the host.
  2. Install the dedicated-server tool. Install it through the supported distribution for your platform and select a dedicated data directory with enough free SSD space. Keep the server files separate from personal documents so backups and permissions are easier to manage.
  3. Update the operating system and server. Apply security updates, then update the dedicated server on a schedule that your players understand. Before a major update, copy the save and configuration files so you can roll back if a mod or client version becomes incompatible.
  4. Set a fixed local address. Create a DHCP reservation or static address for the server. Port-forwarding rules break when the computer receives a different local address after a reboot.
  5. Open the host firewall. Allow the dedicated-server executable and the required inbound ports through the operating-system firewall. The current Satisfactory Wiki networking guidance identifies game port 7777 and reliable-messaging port 8888; apply the protocol specified by the current server guide and restrict rules to the server process where your firewall permits.
  6. Configure the router. Forward the same ports from the public interface to the server’s fixed local address. Home hosting requires port forwarding or a VPN. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not work; request a reachable address or use a VPN-based approach that your players can all access.
  7. Test from outside the home network. Have a player on a different connection join, or use an external port-checking method. Testing only from inside the same LAN can succeed even when the public route is blocked.
  8. Automate startup and recovery. Register the server as a Windows service, scheduled task, or Linux systemd service so it starts at boot. Configure a restart after a crash and set a controlled shutdown procedure to reduce save corruption risk.
  9. Back up saves before maintenance. Keep timestamped copies on a separate disk or another computer, and periodically download one that is not permanently connected to the host. Test restoring a copy; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
  10. Document access. Record the server directory, ports, administrator credentials, update procedure, and restore steps in a password manager or another secure location. Do not publish administrative passwords in a player chat.

Self-hosting costs and operational trade-offs

There is no universal self-hosting price. Your calculation should use the equipment you already own or the actual purchase price of the machine, plus electricity and any networking or backup hardware. A simple estimate is:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

total self-host cost = hardware purchase or depreciation + (average watts ÷ 1000 × hours online × electricity rate) + backup and networking costs

If an existing computer is already on for other work, count only the additional power and wear attributable to the server. If you buy a new system solely for Satisfactory, include the full hardware cost and the value of your time maintaining it. The available specifications do not provide a standard electricity rate, hardware price, monthly hosting price, or measured latency, so those figures must come from your location and equipment rather than a generic calculator.

Where self-hosting excels

  • You can inspect and edit every save, configuration, and log file.
  • You decide when updates occur and can keep a test copy before changing the live world.
  • Mod installation is not constrained by a provider’s panel or file policy.
  • There is no hosting subscription, and the same computer can run other household services.

Where self-hosting hurts

  • The machine, router, firewall, operating system, backups, and recovery are your responsibility.
  • A home connection may have limited upload capacity, changing public IP addresses, or carrier-grade NAT.
  • Power failures, router reboots, and household maintenance can interrupt the world.
  • You must protect an internet-exposed service and keep the host patched.

What renting changes

A rented instance moves the physical machine and most network administration to a third party. You select a plan, choose a data-center region, deploy the server, and invite players using the provider’s address. This is attractive when nobody wants to leave a home PC running or when the group is spread across regions.

Convenience is not the same as unlimited control. The Satisfactory guidance warns that provider setups can limit options or add hidden settings. Before paying, obtain written answers to the following questions:

  • CPU: Which processor generation and allocation does the plan use? Is the advertised allocation a dedicated core, a shared vCPU, or only a portion of a host CPU?
  • Memory: How much RAM is assigned to the game process, and can it be increased without rebuilding the world?
  • Storage: Is the disk SSD-backed? How much space is available for the server, logs, and several save copies?
  • Location: Which city or region will host the instance, and can you move later if most players live elsewhere?
  • Files: Is there SFTP or a complete file manager? Can you download the raw save and configuration files?
  • Backups: How often are snapshots taken, how long are they retained, and can you restore a selected point yourself?
  • Branches and updates: Which Satisfactory server branch is supported, and can you delay an update while clients and mods catch up?
  • Mods: Does the host permit the mod manager or manual installation required by your group? Are custom launch arguments allowed?
  • Recovery: Does the panel restart a crashed process automatically, and what happens during a data-center outage?
  • Support: Does support cover only the panel and machine, or will it help diagnose a game configuration and mod conflict?
  • Exit: Can you cancel without losing files, and can you migrate the complete save to another host or a home machine?

Prices, locations, resource allocations, and provider policies change. Verify them on the provider’s current first-party plan page and terms before purchasing; a generic monthly figure would be misleading.

Mods, versions, and file access

For a modded server, self-hosting is the safer default because you control the directories, configuration, and install order. The Satisfactory Modding Documentation states: “Hosting a server yourself is the best way to ensure you can work with the files required to get modded a server working.”

Third-party hosting can still work, but only when the provider exposes the files and workflow your mod requires. The same documentation cautions that “Third-party server hosts often restrict how you can access and modify files on the system, complicating the mod setup process.” A panel that offers only a start button may be fine for an unmodded world and unsuitable for a custom package.

Compatibility checks before a modded launch

  1. Identify the exact server and client versions required by the mod documentation.
  2. Install matching mod versions on the server and every player’s client.
  3. Confirm that the host permits the required files, launch arguments, and restart process.
  4. Back up the unmodded save before adding or removing mods.
  5. Test with one player before opening the world to the full group.

Server and client mod versions must match. A mismatch can prevent a connection or produce a broken world, so do not update one side casually while the other remains on an older package. Third-party hosts may also limit their support to the operating system and control panel, explicitly excluding custom mod troubleshooting.

Latency, reachability, and player geography

Neither hosting method guarantees a particular ping. A home server can be excellent for players nearby but poor for friends on another continent; a rented server can improve the route for a distributed group if its data center is well placed. Select the location that minimizes distance for most players, then test at the times you normally play.

For home hosting, check upload capacity, public-address stability, and whether the provider places you behind carrier-grade NAT. A VPN can provide an alternate path when ordinary port forwarding is impossible, but every player must install and configure the same VPN solution. For rented hosting, ask whether the public address is dedicated, whether the advertised region is the physical server location, and whether migration between regions is supported.

Save management and migration

Treat the save as the valuable asset, not the server instance. On a self-hosted machine, schedule copies before updates and keep at least one copy on a different device. On a rented server, use the provider’s snapshot tool if available, then periodically download the save through SFTP or the file manager. Confirm that a restore returns both the world and the configuration needed to launch it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When moving between home and a provider, stop the server cleanly, copy the complete save set, record the current game and mod versions, and test the imported world privately. Do not overwrite the only known-good copy during a migration. A host that does not let you retrieve raw files creates a practical lock-in even if the monthly price is attractive.

Maintenance, security, and recovery

Routine checklist

  • Apply operating-system and server updates during an announced maintenance window.
  • Check free SSD space, RAM use, logs, and backup completion.
  • Review firewall and router rules after networking changes.
  • Confirm that the restart service still runs after a reboot.
  • Remove unused accounts and use strong, unique administrator credentials.

Common failure branches

Players cannot see or join the server: verify that the process is running, the host firewall allows the game, ports 7777 and 8888 are forwarded to the correct fixed local address, and the home connection is not behind carrier-grade NAT. Test from a different network rather than relying on a same-LAN test.

The server starts but the world rolls back: stop it cleanly, identify the newest intact save, and restore that copy to a separate directory before trying again. Check disk space and logs; do not repeatedly launch a damaged save over your only backup.

A modded client is rejected: compare the server and client game versions and every mod version. Remove the newest change from a test copy, then add components back one at a time. If rented, confirm that the host actually permits the required files and branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server becomes unstable as the factory grows: monitor memory and CPU, move the world to faster SSD storage, close unrelated services, and consider 16 GB RAM or a newer CPU. A larger rented plan may help only if it supplies materially better CPU performance rather than more shared virtual cores.

Which option fits common groups?

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already own an always-on 64-bit machine that meets the published requirements.
  • One person is comfortable with router forwarding, firewalls, Linux or Windows services, and backups.
  • The group needs unrestricted mod and save-file access.
  • You want to control update timing and avoid a recurring hosting subscription.

Choose renting when

  • No one wants to keep a home computer online or expose a home network.
  • Players need a public address and data-center location outside the host’s home region.
  • You value one-click restarts, snapshots, and provider-managed hardware more than low operating cost.
  • The chosen provider confirms the required CPU, RAM, SSD, file access, mod workflow, and migration path.

Use a staged approach when uncertain

Start with the smallest setup that meets the published hardware baseline, keep independent save copies, and measure the real experience with your group. A home machine can later become a backup host, while a rented server can be cancelled after downloading the world if the group stops playing. Keeping the save portable prevents either decision from becoming permanent.

Bottom line

Self-hosting is the control-first choice: it offers direct access to saves, configuration, updates, and mods, but requires hardware, electricity, networking, security, and recovery work. Renting is the convenience-first choice: it removes most home-network and hardware chores, but adds a recurring cost and may restrict files, mods, updates, or support. Decide only after matching the server’s CPU and RAM to the save, confirming ports or reachability, checking backup and file access, and calculating the cost over the period you expect to play.
