Satellite SOS vs. a Personal Locator Beacon: Which Is Right for Travel?

Choose a 406 MHz personal locator beacon (PLB) if you want a dedicated distress signal and do not need ongoing messaging service. Choose a satellite communicator with SOS if you also want two-way messages, check-ins, or location sharing. A PLB and a satellite communicator are different tools: one primarily sends a manually activated distress alert; the other can combine SOS with communications.

How a PLB differs from a satellite communicator with SOS

Here, “PLB” means an individual-carried, manually activated 406 MHz personal locator beacon. NOAA says some models encode a position from integrated GNSS; that capability is not universal. A satellite communicator is a broader category. Garmin inReach is one example: Garmin describes it as offering SOS along with messaging, weather, and tracking features.

Decision point 406 MHz PLB Satellite communicator with SOS
Main purpose Send a distress alert when manually activated. Send an SOS and use additional communications features, depending on device and service.
Alert pathway The Cospas-Sarsat satellite and ground system relays the alert to a rescue coordination center. For Garmin inReach, SOS connects to Garmin Response, whose team can communicate with the user and coordinate with local responders.
Communication after activation A conventional PLB is a distress beacon; do not assume it supports two-way conversation. Two-way messaging is a key feature of Garmin’s interactive SOS service.
Recurring service NOAA says there are no user or subscription fees for the Cospas-Sarsat beacon service beyond purchasing the beacon. U.S. beacon registration is free. Garmin says an active satellite subscription is required for inReach SOS. Plans and charges vary by market and tier.
Registration and upkeep Register with the authority for the beacon’s country code. U.S.-coded beacons must be registered with NOAA and renewed every two years. Activate the service, keep account and emergency-contact details current, and check route-specific availability and rules.

How the two SOS systems route an emergency

PLB: distress beacon through Cospas-Sarsat

A 406 MHz beacon signal is received by satellite, relayed to a ground station for processing, and passed through mission control to the nearest rescue coordination center. NOAA says registration helps identify the beacon owner and gives responders useful information. The alert being received or routed does not, by itself, confirm that a rescue has been launched or guarantee a particular response time or outcome. NOAA SARSAT

McMurdo FastFind 220 Personal Locator Beacon - US Programming
  • This Personal Locator Beacon is pre programmed for registration with the US country code. Whilst it will function anywhere around the world, the initial point of contact during an emergency situation would be the US Search and Rescue authorities with whom the PLB would be registered.
  • If you require registration outside of the US, please purchase our alternative listing for 'McMurdo Fast Find 220 PLB - Programmed for Rest of World '. We include at no charge a reprogramming service on this alternative listing to ensure the device can be registered in the country of your choice.
  • Registering your Personal Locator Beacon is required by law in most countries. Registering is very important because should your beacon ever be activated, it is how Search and Rescue Teams will know who you are, and contacts provided may be able to supply information about your specific travel plans. In the absence of this information, it may take longer for a search-and-rescue operation to begin.
  • PLBs have been proven, tried and tested in some of the world's most remote locations and treacherous conditions. Even in extreme conditions and situations, the FastFind 220 activates easily. Just deploy the antenna, pull the anti-tamper seal and press the ON button.
  • This PLB should only be used in situations of grave and imminent danger to life. False alerts endanger lives and cause expensive disruption to Search and Rescue services. Deliberate misuse of the device could result in a penalty.

Garmin inReach: SOS with a response-team conversation

Garmin says an inReach SOS connects to Garmin Response. Its team can communicate with the user, track the device, notify relevant authorities and responders, and continue exchanging messages. Garmin requires an active service subscription for SOS. These details describe Garmin’s service; “satellite SOS” is not one uniform system, so check the specific product’s pathway and requirements. Which option fits your kind of travel?

Pick a PLB if you want a dedicated emergency beacon

  • You mainly want to summon help in a serious emergency, rather than send routine updates.
  • You prefer not to maintain a recurring satellite service subscription for the beacon service.
  • You are prepared to register the beacon correctly, keep it maintained, and carry it accessibly.

A PLB is not a substitute for a messaging device if you want to tell family you are delayed or share changing plans. If considering a specific unit, such as the ACR ResQLink 400, check its country coding, registration eligibility, manual, and battery instructions; features and specifications belong to that model, not to every PLB.

Pick a satellite communicator with SOS if you want communication too

  • You expect to send check-ins, share location, or exchange messages while outside ordinary mobile coverage.
  • You want the ability to give an SOS response team more context through two-way communication, where the service supports it.
  • You are willing to activate and maintain the required plan and verify that your itinerary is supported.

Registration, legality, and readiness before departure

  1. Check the PLB’s country code. Register it with the national authority responsible for that code. NOAA’s database is for U.S.-coded beacons; a beacon coded for another country should be registered with the appropriate authority. NOAA beacon registration guidance
  2. Keep the registration record current. NOAA says U.S. records must be renewed every two years and updated when contact details change.
  3. Check destination rules. Garmin warns that some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit satellite communication devices. Verify rules and service coverage for every country on the itinerary. Garmin inReach SOS information
  4. For a communicator, verify service before travel. Confirm the active plan, included features, and country availability rather than assuming that a device that works at home will be usable everywhere.
  5. Inspect and learn the device. Check battery expiry and the manufacturer’s maintenance and test-mode instructions. Carry it where it can be reached and learn the activation procedure. NOAA warns that non-distress activation can divert search-and-rescue resources. NOAA SARSAT

What the published PLB specifications do—and do not—tell you

NOAA describes approximately 100-meter location accuracy for PLBs with integrated GNSS and a minimum 24-hour operational battery life after activation. These are general descriptions, not guarantees for every model or operating condition. ACR’s current ResQLink 400 listing specifies 24+ hours of operational life and a five-year battery life; ACR says that model’s battery must be replaced after five years or emergency use, whichever comes first, through an authorized battery replacement center.
