Satellite Greenhouse Gas Monitoring vs. Ground Sensors: What Each Measures

Satellites usually retrieve how much greenhouse gas lies through the atmosphere above an area; many ground stations instead measure air at one location near the surface. They are different measurements, not interchangeable readings. Some ground-based spectrometers also retrieve atmospheric columns, making them useful references for checking satellite data.

What does a satellite measure?

Satellite greenhouse-gas instruments observe light reflected or emitted by Earth’s surface and atmosphere. Processing that signal produces a column abundance: the amount of a gas in the atmospheric column above a unit of surface area. Japan’s Ministry of the Environment describes GOSAT-series observations as spanning from the surface to the top of the atmosphere, unlike ground stations that observe at the surface (Japan Ministry of the Environment: GOSAT series; NIES GOSAT: Instruments and Observational Methods).

For GOSAT, the reported column abundances include carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). A column value combines the gas present at different altitudes; it is not a reading of the concentration at a particular facility or street-level site.

What do ground-based sensors measure?

Surface in-situ stations

A typical in-situ ground station samples air at its location and measures the gas concentration in that local air. The result is a site-level observation. It does not, by itself, describe the full atmospheric column above the site or represent a wider region.

Ground-based column spectrometers

Not every ground instrument measures only surface air. The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) uses ground-based Fourier-transform spectrometers to record direct near-infrared sunlight and retrieve column-averaged abundances. Its listed gases include CO2, CH4, nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrogen fluoride (HF), carbon monoxide (CO), water vapor (H2O), and HDO (TCCON).

That distinction matters when comparing instruments: a surface concentration and a column average are different measurands. A fair comparison needs measurements of the same kind, or an explicit method for relating them.

How the measurements compare

Question Satellite monitoring Ground-based monitoring
Typical quantity Retrieved abundance through an atmospheric column, for gases such as CO2 and CH4. Often local surface concentration; column networks such as TCCON retrieve column averages.
Where observations come from Repeated observations over broad areas, limited to sampled and usable scenes. Specific fixed sites; how well they represent surrounding areas depends on siting and network density.
Particular strength Provides a broad spatial view, including places with few ground sites. Provides site time series and independent reference observations for satellite evaluation.
Key constraint Clouds and aerosols can interfere with optical retrievals, which require processing. A local surface reading is not a whole-column measurement, and sparse sites leave gaps in regional coverage.
Best interpretation A column observation used as an input to regional or global analysis. A measurement at a site, or a ground-based column reference when using a column spectrometer.

These are broad distinctions, not a specification comparison of every satellite mission or ground instrument; coverage and availability depend on the system and observing conditions (NIES GOSAT: Instruments and Observational Methods; NIES GOSAT: Methods of Analyzing GOSAT Data; Japan Ministry of the Environment: GOSAT series).

Why a concentration reading is not an emissions rate

A measured concentration or column abundance describes the gas in sampled air; it is not automatically a direct tally of emissions from a source. For GOSAT, the project describes estimating sources, sinks, and three-dimensional distributions of CO2 and CH4 with a global atmospheric transport model. That analysis uses atmospheric observations and modeling to infer emissions and removals rather than reading a facility’s emissions directly from a satellite measurement (NIES GOSAT: Methods of Analyzing GOSAT Data).

Why satellite and ground observations work together

Satellites extend observations across wide areas, while ground stations supply measurements at particular sites. Where ground networks are sparse, estimates of sources and sinks can be less certain. Ground observations also provide independent checks: GOSAT product validation uses high-precision ground-based high-resolution Fourier-transform spectrometers and aircraft in-situ observations. TCCON likewise identifies satellite validation as a role for its column measurements (NIES GOSAT: Methods of Analyzing GOSAT Data; NIES GOSAT: Validation of GOSAT Data Products; TCCON).

Validation is most informative when the compared measurements are compatible and their different sampling methods are accounted for. A surface analyzer and a satellite column retrieval do not observe the same slice of atmosphere; a ground-based column spectrometer offers a closer like-for-like reference.

What can limit a satellite observation?

Satellite maps do not represent uninterrupted direct measurements in every weather or surface condition. The GOSAT processing description says cloud and aerosol information is used to select observation points with limited interference. As a result, the usable observations depend on conditions and processing, and apparent gaps should not be mistaken for zero greenhouse gas (NIES GOSAT: Methods of Analyzing GOSAT Data).

Which kind of measurement answers your question?

  • Local air concentration: Look to a surface in-situ station, and interpret its result as air measured at that site.
  • Atmospheric column over a broad area: Satellite retrievals provide spatially extensive column observations when suitable scenes can be processed.
  • Ground reference for a satellite column: A column-observing network such as TCCON is designed to retrieve column averages and supports satellite validation.
  • Regional or global emissions and sinks: These require analysis that relates observations to atmospheric transport; neither a local concentration nor an individual satellite column is itself an emissions rate.

GOSAT-series mission status

On the Japan Ministry of the Environment’s GOSAT-series page, accessed October 2026, the listed missions are GOSAT, GOSAT-2, and GOSAT-GW. The ministry says GOSAT-GW launched in 2025 and is intended to continue observations of atmospheric CO2 and methane. Mission status can change, so consult the ministry’s current page for the latest operational information (Japan Ministry of the Environment: GOSAT series).
