The increase came even as the number of test takers fell: more than 1.95 million graduating seniors took the exam, 2.5% fewer than in the prior class.
What changed in the class of 2026 scores?
College Board’s September 29, 2026 announcement reports higher averages in both sections. The total is the combined mean for the graduating cohort, not a measure of how much any particular student improved.

The section gains add up to the 16-point increase in the total mean. The Math comparison also shows why a year-over-year rise does not necessarily mean a return to an earlier benchmark.
More students did not take the SAT this year
More than 1.95 million members of the class of 2026 took the SAT, a 2.5% decline from the class of 2025. College Board describes this as the first participation decrease since the pandemic-affected class of 2021. Separately, the organization says the SAT Suite reached more than six million students during the 2025–26 school year; that broader figure is not the count of graduating seniors who took the SAT.

The average score and the number of test takers describe different things. The report does not show that lower participation caused higher scores, nor does a cohort average mean every student or demographic group improved by 16 points. College Board says scores increased across demographic groups, but its announcement does not establish why they rose.
Readiness benchmarks are not individual outcome guarantees
College Board reports that 42% of SAT takers met or exceeded both section readiness benchmarks, compared with 45% of the class of 2019. The organization interprets meeting both benchmarks as indicating a likelihood of success in credit-bearing coursework across postsecondary pathways. It is a benchmark interpretation, not proof of how an individual student will perform in college or another pathway.

The report also says more than 1.3 million students had SAT scores that affirmed or exceeded their high-school GPA. That is a reported relationship between scores and GPA, not evidence that the SAT caused students’ academic performance.
The SAT’s 100-year milestone
The anniversary marks 100 years of the SAT in 2026. College Board senior vice president of College Readiness Assessments Priscilla Rodriguez described the SAT Suite’s reach as serving the organization’s mission of helping students navigate opportunities after high school, including college, career training, or entering the workforce. That is College Board’s characterization of its mission and program, rather than an independent assessment.
