SAST vs. DAST vs. SCA: Which Application Security Tests Do You Need?

Use SAST for flaws in your own code, SCA for risks in third-party components, and DAST for weaknesses that can be observed in a running application. They are complementary views, not competing names for the same scan. SAST reads source or compiled code without executing it; software composition analysis (SCA) inventories open-source and other external components and evaluates their vulnerability and license risk; dynamic application security testing (DAST) sends requests to a deployed application and analyzes its responses and runtime behavior.

For an application with substantial first-party code, a dependency ecosystem, and an exposed web interface, the practical answer is usually to combine all three at different points in the delivery process. A small internal service may start with the method that answers its most urgent risk question, then add coverage as the system and release process mature.

The three tests at a glance

Method Primary subject Natural workflow point What it can reveal Main blind spot
SAST
Static application security testing
First-party source code or compiled code, without running the application Coding, pull-request or commit checks, and build validation Insecure coding patterns and code-level flaws while a change is still being developed It cannot observe the application’s actual runtime behavior; findings need validation and remediation in code context
DAST
Dynamic application security testing
A running application through its exposed interface Deploy or test environments, often before release Problems visible through requests and responses, including behavior that appears only at runtime It has no source-code view and can miss unvisited routes, difficult business logic and other cases requiring human reasoning
SCA
Software composition analysis
Third-party and open-source components, including identifiable transitive dependencies Build checks and continuing dependency management Known vulnerable, outdated or license-restricted components and the dependency relationships that bring them into a product It does not review the security of original application code or test the live application

The names describe the artifact or behavior being examined. A SAST result is about a code path, a DAST result is about an interaction with a running system, and an SCA result is about a component and its associated metadata. Their broad goal is the same—reduce application risk—but the evidence each produces is different.

What SAST does and when to use it

How static analysis works

SAST examines source code or a compiled representation while the application is stopped. OWASP Foundation describes these products as tools that “can help analyze source code or compiled versions of code to help find security flaws.” A scanner builds an understanding of constructs such as data flow, control flow and calls between functions, then looks for patterns associated with insecure behavior. The exact checks depend on the language, framework and analysis engine.

Because no deployment is required, a SAST check can run while a developer is coding, when a change is committed, during a pull-request review or as part of a build. Early feedback makes it possible to correct a flaw in the same code change that introduced it, although the result still needs a developer or security engineer to confirm the context and choose a safe fix.

Questions SAST answers

  • Does a first-party code path contain a pattern associated with an injection, unsafe handling of data or another code-level weakness?
  • Which file, function or line should a developer inspect?
  • Can a new change be checked before it is merged or packaged?
  • Does the scanner support the project’s language and framework well enough to produce actionable findings?

What SAST cannot establish

A clean static-analysis report is not proof that a deployed application is secure. SAST does not see production configuration, the behavior of a particular server, runtime state, authentication setup or an endpoint that is assembled only after deployment. It also can report a theoretically dangerous pattern that is unreachable or safely constrained in the application. Treat each alert as a lead to validate in code context, not as an automatic vulnerability count.

What DAST does and when to use it

How dynamic testing works

DAST exercises a running application through the interface available to an outside client, generally by sending requests and examining responses. The target can be a controlled test or pre-production deployment rather than a public production system. The scanner observes what the application actually does, including runtime responses and behavior that cannot be inferred from source alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OWASP’s Developer Guide puts the distinction plainly: “Unlike static application security testing tools, DAST tools do not have access to the source code and therefore detect vulnerabilities by actually performing attacks.” That outside-in view is useful for checking an assembled application, its routes and its deployed configuration.

Questions DAST answers

  • What can an external client reach through the configured application interface?
  • How does the deployed system respond to crafted requests and unexpected input?
  • Does a route, session or API behave insecurely at runtime even when the underlying code appears acceptable in isolation?
  • Are the intended endpoints, authentication flows and deployment settings present in the environment being tested?

What DAST cannot establish

A dynamic scan can only test what it can discover and exercise. An unvisited route, an account state the scanner cannot obtain, a rarely used workflow or a business rule requiring human judgment may remain untested. DAST also cannot tell a developer which source-code statement caused a response. Automated requests do not replace manual assessment: OWASP notes that manual testing may uncover business-logic errors, race conditions and some zero-day vulnerabilities that automated tools can miss.

What SCA does and when to use it

How component analysis works

SCA starts with an inventory of the software components an application uses. It identifies direct dependencies and, where the tooling can resolve them, transitive dependencies pulled in by those direct packages. The inventory is matched against vulnerability and license information so a team can investigate known exposure, age, upgrade options and distribution obligations.

That inventory is foundational. A vulnerability count without knowing which component, version, path and application function are involved is difficult to act on. OWASP emphasizes that a component’s age, function, quantity and license can matter alongside whether a public vulnerability has been recorded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions SCA answers

  • Which external libraries and packages are present in the build?
  • Which of those components have publicly disclosed vulnerabilities or are no longer current?
  • Did a transitive dependency introduce risk even though nobody declared it directly?
  • Does a component carry a license condition that affects how the application can be distributed?

What SCA cannot establish

SCA does not inspect the security quality of your original code and does not exercise a deployed application. A component with no matching public advisory is not automatically risk-free, and a component with an advisory still requires context: the vulnerable function may be unused, a fixed release may be available, or an upgrade may require testing. Keep the component inventory current as builds and dependency lockfiles change.

Where each test fits in a delivery lifecycle

OWASP’s lifecycle guidance maps SAST to commit-time checks, SCA to build time and DAST to deploy time. These are useful defaults rather than restrictions. A team can run SAST in a build, refresh SCA inventories on a schedule and run DAST against a developer environment when that produces faster feedback.

Delivery activity Most natural test Reason Practical output
Developer edits or reviews a change SAST The code artifact is available before deployment A finding tied to a file, function or line for correction in the change
Project is assembled SCA Dependency manifests and resolved packages can be inventoried A component list with vulnerability and license information
Build is deployed to a controlled environment DAST The scanner can interact with the assembled application Evidence from requests, responses and observed runtime behavior
Release or recurring assurance All applicable methods Code, dependencies and deployment behavior can change independently Separate findings that can be correlated during triage

How to choose the right starting point

Begin with the risk question rather than the product category. The following sequence keeps the decision tied to the evidence you need.

  1. Ask whether the concern is in code you own. If developers need feedback about a flaw in first-party implementation while they are writing, reviewing or merging it, start with SAST.
  2. Ask whether the concern is in software you import. If the immediate need is a reliable inventory of third-party components, known vulnerabilities, outdated versions or license constraints, start with SCA.
  3. Ask whether the concern is behavior in a deployed system. If you need an external view of a web application’s reachable interface and runtime responses, use DAST against a controlled environment.
  4. Check whether one view leaves a material gap. An application with meaningful proprietary code, a substantial dependency ecosystem and an exposed runtime surface generally benefits from combining the methods.
  5. Match the method to your ability to triage. A scan that produces findings nobody can validate or fix will not improve security. Plan ownership, severity review, remediation and exception handling before expanding coverage.

How to combine SAST, SCA and DAST without confusing their results

1. Establish the code and dependency baseline

Run SAST on the supported source or compiled artifacts and record which languages and frameworks are included. At the same time, generate an SCA inventory from the manifests and resolved build output. Keep the two result sets separate: a vulnerable package is not the same finding as an unsafe use of that package in first-party code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Put fast checks before the merge or build

Use the shortest, most relevant SAST checks for coding and commit or pull-request feedback. Run SCA during the build so a newly introduced direct or transitive component is visible before an artifact is promoted. Teams can schedule fuller scans separately when they would otherwise make ordinary development feedback too slow.

3. Deploy a representative test target

DAST needs a running application and enough access to exercise its intended surface. Use a controlled deployment that resembles the release configuration, provide the accounts and test data required for legitimate workflows, and avoid scanning systems where automated requests could cause harm.

4. Triage by evidence, not by a combined number

For SAST, inspect the reported code path and determine whether the behavior is reachable and unsafe. For SCA, confirm the component identity, version, dependency path, advisory applicability, upgrade or replacement options and license implications. For DAST, reproduce the request and response, verify the affected route and assess the impact in the test environment. Do not add the three alert totals and call the result an application risk score; they measure different things.

5. Route fixes to the team that can make them

A SAST issue normally goes to the code owner for a change in implementation. An SCA issue may require updating a manifest or lockfile, replacing a package, or documenting why a component remains. A DAST issue may require code, configuration, deployment or authentication changes. Preserve the scanner evidence and the developer’s validation so a later scan can distinguish a fixed issue from a changed route or dependency.

Comparing tools within each category

The label alone does not tell you whether a tool fits your environment. Compare products and open-source projects on the dimensions that determine useful coverage and manageable remediation.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Language and framework support Does the analyzer understand every language, framework and build form that matters, or only a subset?
Input artifacts and access Does SAST require source or binaries? Can SCA read the manifests and lockfiles actually used in the build? Can DAST reach the routes, APIs and authenticated states that need testing?
Integration point and latency Can the check run at commit, pull request, build or deploy without blocking ordinary work for an unacceptable time?
Coverage Which code paths, dependency ecosystems, transitive relationships, protocols and application surfaces are included?
Report quality Does each finding contain enough location, request, component and remediation context for a human to reproduce and fix it?
Remediation workflow Can findings be assigned, deduplicated, suppressed with an explanation and tracked through closure?
Deployment model Does the tool fit the team’s source-control, build, hosting and data-handling requirements?
Cost and terms Confirm current pricing, usage limits, support and licensing directly with the provider; these details are not established here.

Support and pricing change, so verify current capabilities and program terms before adopting a tool. A product described as SAST, DAST or SCA may include adjacent features, but those extras do not remove the underlying boundaries between code analysis, component analysis and runtime testing.

Concrete SCA example: OWASP Dependency-Check

OWASP Dependency-Check is a command-line SCA example that identifies third-party libraries and checks them for publicly disclosed vulnerabilities. Its documented workflow maps dependencies to CPE identifiers and cross-references vulnerability records. Integrations described by the OWASP Developer Guide include Ant, the command line, Gradle, Jenkins and Maven.

This makes it a practical example of dependency vulnerability scanning, not a complete substitute for every software-supply-chain requirement. You still need an accurate inventory, attention to transitive components, license review and a decision about whether a reported vulnerability applies to the way the component is used. The same principle applies to other SCA implementations.

Important boundaries and common mistakes

“We ran SAST, so the application is secure.”

SAST sees code artifacts, not the deployed system. Runtime configuration, reachable routes, authentication state and interactions among services can change the security result. Pair code analysis with testing of the running application when those factors matter.

“A DAST scan covered the whole application.”

Coverage is limited to what the scanner discovered and could exercise. Confirm which routes, APIs, roles and workflows were actually tested. Add manual assessment for business logic, race conditions and unusual states that automated requests are unlikely to understand.

“The SCA dashboard has only a few vulnerabilities, so dependencies are fine.”

The count may omit an unidentified package, a transitive relationship, a license concern or a risk without a published advisory. Review the inventory itself and the component’s age, function and role, not only the number of matched vulnerabilities.

“One tool category replaces the others.”

A scanner’s marketing scope does not change what its underlying evidence represents. A component report does not test your code, a code report does not exercise the deployed service and an external scan does not reveal every source-level flaw.

Planning a sustainable program

Define ownership before enforcement

Decide who receives each class of finding, who can approve an exception and how fixes are verified. Without an owner, a blocking check can become a queue of ignored alerts rather than a security control.

Use severity and context to set gates

Not every alert should stop every commit. Establish criteria for findings that require immediate remediation, findings that can be scheduled, and findings that need documented acceptance after review. The criteria should account for exploitability, reachability, affected component or route and the exposure of the environment.

Keep inventories and targets current

Dependency versions, build outputs, routes and authentication flows change. Refresh SCA data as dependencies change, rerun SAST when code changes, and point DAST at a representative deployment. A scan of yesterday’s artifact cannot answer what is in today’s release.

Use the OWASP testing material as a reference, not a promise of coverage

The OWASP Web Security Testing Guide project lists version 4.2 as an available versioned release and says version 5.0 is in development, as checked on October 13, 2026. Treat a guide version as a reference for planning and terminology; it does not mean an automated scanner has performed every test described there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision checklist

  • Choose SAST first when the immediate problem is finding and correcting insecure patterns in proprietary code before merge or build.
  • Choose SCA first when you lack a dependable dependency inventory or need to investigate known vulnerabilities, outdated packages, transitive dependencies or license restrictions.
  • Choose DAST first when a running web application is the concern and you need evidence from its externally reachable requests and responses in a controlled environment.
  • Combine them when code, imported components and runtime behavior all contribute materially to risk.
  • Add manual testing for business logic, race conditions, unusual workflows and other cases automated analysis may miss.
  • Verify tool fit against languages, frameworks, artifacts, dependency ecosystems, routes, authentication, feedback time, reporting and current terms.

There is no universal winner in the SAST-versus-DAST-versus-SCA comparison. The right test is the one that answers the risk question you have, and a mature program uses each method where its evidence is strongest while acknowledging what it cannot see.
