BJP leader Kewal Singh Dhillon called for a thorough investigation after Sanamdeep Singh, a 23-year-old Dalit youth from Kanoi village in Sangrur district, was cremated under police arrangements. Congress leader Raj Kumar Verka said the party would approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the State Human Rights Commission. The announcement does not establish that either filing was made.
What happened in the Sangrur case
Sanamdeep Singh’s family protested for several days outside the mortuary at Sangrur civil hospital. They sought the arrest of four people booked on September 28 for alleged abetment of suicide and asked police to add provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The family alleged the four had threatened and verbally abused him on caste grounds; these allegations have not been established as facts.

Reports differ on when Singh died: Hindustan Times said he allegedly died by suicide on September 25, while the Times of India reported that he died on September 26, a day after allegedly consuming poison. The available accounts do not resolve the one-day discrepancy.

Why the cremation was disputed
The family said it was not allowed a final look at Singh and that the cremation took place without them. Police said the hospital had informed them that the body was decomposing and that family members repeatedly refused the post-mortem. An earlier report said a magistrate was deputed to inform the family to proceed. The reviewed reports do not independently establish what notices were served or whether family consent was legally required.
