SANDISK Optimus SSDs: How to Choose Between the 5100 and GX 7100

The SanDisk Optimus range includes drives aimed at different workloads, but the two models with the clearest official specifications are the creator-oriented Optimus 5100 and gaming-oriented Optimus GX 7100. Both are M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs; their capacities, NAND types and advertised performance differ. Check your device’s slot and NVMe support before choosing either one.

What the SanDisk Optimus names mean

SanDisk’s documented consumer models include the Optimus 5100 and Optimus GX 7100. SanDisk positions the 5100 for creator and everyday use, and the GX 7100 for gaming. A January 2026 report from Tom’s Hardware describes a broader naming scheme—Optimus, Optimus GX and Optimus GX Pro—and maps the 5100, 7100 and 8100 names to earlier WD Blue SN5100, WD Black SN7100 and WD Black SN8100 models, respectively. That is reported predecessor context, not proof that specifications or hardware revisions are identical. The official GX Pro 8100 specifications are not established here, so the two documented drives below are not a complete catalog.

Which SanDisk Optimus SSD should you buy?

First check that your computer or other device accepts an M.2 2280 NVMe drive and supports PCIe. The shared form factor and interface labels do not guarantee fit or compatibility in every laptop, handheld, console or motherboard. Then choose capacity and workload fit; do not assume a larger drive has the highest advertised speed.

  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]
  • Choose the Optimus 5100 if its available capacities and creator/everyday positioning suit your use. SanDisk specifies QLC 3D CBA NAND, Host Memory Buffer and nCache 4.0.
  • Consider the Optimus GX 7100 for its gaming positioning and TLC NAND. SanDisk specifies 8th-generation BiCS TLC 3D CBA NAND.
  • Compare the capacity-specific figures below rather than treating a product family’s peak number as universal.

The NAND distinction is documented, but the available specifications do not establish a complete real-world comparison of endurance or sustained workloads between the lines. Performance figures are manufacturer maximums under stated test conditions, not independent test results or guaranteed typical speeds; SanDisk says performance can vary with host, usage conditions and capacity.

Optimus 5100 specifications by capacity

The 2025 SanDisk data sheet lists four capacities. Its sequential transfer figures are maximums under the sheet’s test conditions; endurance is stated in terabytes written (TBW).

Optimus GX 7100 specifications

SanDisk describes the GX 7100 as a gaming drive with an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe interface and 8th-generation BiCS TLC 3D CBA NAND. The data sheet supports capacities up to 4TB. Its quoted peak figures apply specifically to the 1TB and 2TB models:

These are manufacturer specifications, not evidence of an independently measured gaming advantage. The sheet also lists Dashboard Game Mode for Windows, Acronis True Image for SanDisk migration software and a five-year limited warranty. Check applicable regional and retailer warranty terms. Read SanDisk’s Optimus GX 7100 data sheet.

Compatibility and migration checks

Before buying

  • Confirm the device has room for an M.2 2280 module.
  • Confirm the slot supports NVMe over PCIe; M.2 describes the connector/form factor, not by itself the drive protocol.
  • Check the device maker’s support information for capacity limits and installation requirements, especially in laptops, handhelds and consoles.

If you are moving an existing system

SanDisk lists Acronis True Image for SanDisk migration software for the GX 7100; its materials note that a separate cable or enclosure may be required. Dashboard software is documented as Windows-only. Confirm software compatibility and whether you need an enclosure before starting a migration.

How to interpret the advertised speeds

Sequential read/write numbers describe large, continuous transfers under manufacturer test conditions. They do not predict every application’s load time or sustained write behavior. Capacity matters: on the 5100, the 1TB and 2TB models have higher listed maximum read speeds than the 4TB; on the GX 7100, the quoted peak sequential and random figures are specified for 1TB and 2TB. Treat these as model-specific ceilings, not guarantees for another capacity or host system.
