The same announcement reported $75 million in 2024 sales, more than 1.4 million players during 2024 and 127 locations in development in its headline—while the release body described nearly 150 total units in development.
That is meaningful evidence of demand for out-of-home, multiplayer VR. It is not proof that 150 new stores were already open, that every planned unit will launch, or that Sandbox VR or its franchisees are profitable.

What Sandbox VR actually announced
The company’s April 15, 2025 announcement combined a sales milestone with a large franchise expansion plan. Its reported figures were:
| Metric | Company-reported figure |
|---|---|
| Lifetime sales | More than $200 million |
| 2024 sales | $75 million |
| 2024 players | More than 1.4 million |
| March 2025 players | More than 150,000 |
| Average monthly players in 2024 | Approximately 117,000 |
| Projected average monthly players in 2025 | Approximately 150,000 |
| Franchise units sold since the beginning of 2024 | 83 |
| Operators | 34 |
| Expected 2025 openings | 29 new locations |
The company also said Philadelphia was its 60th global location at the time. These are company-reported figures in the announcement, not audited financial statements.

Why the story says both 127 and nearly 150 locations
The discrepancy is in the company’s own wording. The Business Wire headline says “127 locations in development.” In the body, Sandbox VR says that selling 83 franchise units since the beginning of 2024 brought it to “nearly 150 total units in development.” VentureBeat likewise used “150 more locations” in its headline but described stores in development in the article.
Those descriptions may use different counting dates or conventions, such as signed franchise units versus a broader development count. The safe interpretation is that Sandbox VR reported a pipeline of roughly 127 to nearly 150 units—not 150 additional operating stores. “In development” can include units at very different stages:
- Franchise agreement signed
- Site identified
- Lease executed
- Construction underway
- Venue opened
- Venue operating long enough to demonstrate sustained performance
The announcement establishes a large pipeline, but it does not identify the status of every unit or confirm that all 29 projected 2025 openings occurred. Sandbox VR’s current directory includes operating venues and locations marked “Coming Soon,” but it is not a historical opening audit: https://sandboxvr.com/subscription.

What “$200 million in lifetime sales” does—and does not—mean
Sandbox VR calls the milestone “lifetime sales.” Founder Steve Zhao has also referred to lifetime tickets sold in a social post, but the available announcement does not provide a full accounting definition. Therefore, the figure should not automatically be called net revenue, profit, bookings or cash collected.

The release does not break out how much came from guest tickets versus memberships, merchandise, food and beverage, or other items, nor does it clearly separate corporate-owned and franchised venues. It is best read as a company-defined cumulative sales milestone.
The $75 million reported for 2024 shows substantial activity, but the announcement gives no comparable prior-year revenue, audited statements or detailed revenue bridge. It supports demand and scale; it does not by itself establish a growth rate, margin or valuation.
Why franchising is the expansion engine
Sandbox VR’s model combines company technology and content with locally operated venues. VentureBeat reported CEO Steve Zhao saying that the company moved from signing roughly one franchise operator per quarter to about seven per quarter beginning in the third quarter of 2024. Zhao also said a first venue generally takes about nine months to open after contract signing, with later venues potentially opening faster.

Franchising changes the capital equation:
Potential advantages for Sandbox VR
- Franchisees provide much of the location investment, reducing Sandbox VR’s direct capital burden.
- More venues can generate royalties and create a larger installed base for new games.
- Local operators can contribute market knowledge and execution capacity.
Trade-offs and risks
- Sandbox VR receives a smaller share of each venue’s economics than it would from owning every store.
- Customer service, staffing, maintenance and local marketing can vary by operator.
- A large pipeline can increase headline location counts without improving same-store performance.
- Hardware downtime, replacement costs and training requirements remain operational risks.
VentureBeat’s interview with Zhao provides the company’s explanation of this strategy: https://venturebeat.com/games/sandbox-vr-surpasses-200m-in-lifetime-sales-with-127-more-locations-in-the-pipeline/.

Why customers pay for out-of-home VR
Sandbox VR is designed as a social location-based entertainment product rather than a solo home-headset experience. Groups of up to six people move through a tracked play area, with full-body motion capture and haptics making avatars and actions feel shared in physical space. Staff support the session, and the company says mixed-reality videos of the group are provided at no additional charge.
The format’s appeal depends on cooperation, spectacle and convenience: a group can arrive, receive an introduction, play together and leave with a captured memory without buying or configuring home equipment. It does not make home VR obsolete; the products solve different problems.
Details on group play, tracking and haptics appear on the Orlando location page and the customer FAQ: https://sandboxvr.com/orlando/location?lang=en and https://ssr.sandboxvr.com/faq.

Content is the demand flywheel
Sandbox VR develops original experiences through internal studios and has also licensed recognizable brands. Its portfolio includes Squid Game Virtuals, made with Netflix, while VentureBeat identified Deadwood Valley as a major hit. The company has said a larger venue base would support more frequent launches and additional partnerships, including possible cultural-learning experiences.

The strategic question is repeat demand. Licensed releases can create spikes, but durable economics require guests to return, new content to arrive regularly and venues outside major tourism or entertainment districts to maintain utilization.

- They do not establish profitability or positive free cash flow.
- They do not disclose average store revenue, labor, rent, marketing, royalties, equipment replacement or content costs.
- They do not establish franchisee return on investment or payback period.
- They do not show what percentage of pipeline units were financed, leased, under construction or merely targeted.
- They do not confirm that all 127 or nearly 150 units will open.
- They do not resolve whether “sales” means gross ticket sales, recognized revenue or another internal measure.
Sandbox VR’s franchise page uses promotional language about ROI potential and attractive financials, but the public page does not provide enough data to calculate returns. Prospective operators should obtain the Franchise Disclosure Document and examine fees, required investment, territory terms, royalties, marketing contributions, store-level financial performance and closure history: https://franchise.sandboxvr.com/?leadsource=parent-site.

Membership benefits are tied to a home location: weekday play, up to two sessions per day subject to availability, a bring-a-friend benefit and selected discounts. Weekends, holidays and blackout dates are excluded, and the initial commitment is not freely cancellable.
Booking and cancellation constraints
- Groups larger than six generally need private-event coordination.
- Cancellations at least 72 hours before a booking qualify for a full refund or voucher; shorter-notice cancellations may incur fees or provide only a voucher.
- Arriving more than five minutes late can lead to cancellation and a fee under the FAQ’s tardiness policy.
- Prices, content and availability vary by location.
Bookings are handled through Sandbox VR’s official booking page.
What operators should examine
The public franchise materials cite at least $1 million in liquid assets and $2 million net worth as qualification signals. A typical four-holodeck store is described as approximately 4,000 to 5,500 square feet, with an ideal clear ceiling of 11 feet or more; configurations as low as 9 feet may be possible.
Those specifications are only a starting screen. A serious site review should model:
- Rent, occupancy and local competition
- Holodeck count, session length and hourly throughput
- Ticket pricing, discounts and seasonal demand
- Labor for onboarding, safety, cleaning and room resets
- Hardware maintenance, replacement and downtime
- Corporate events, birthday parties and tourism dependence
- Franchise fees, royalties and marketing charges
Ticket price alone cannot produce a credible payback estimate.
Bottom line for 2026 readers
Sandbox VR’s $200 million milestone is a real company announcement from April 15, 2025, backed by reported 2024 sales and player counts. Its franchise sales also indicate that operators were willing to fund a substantial expansion. But “150 locations in the pipeline” is shorthand for a forward-looking development count, not 150 completed stores. The company has demonstrated sales momentum and a scalable content-and-franchise strategy; it has not publicly demonstrated the profitability, unit economics or completion rate needed to call the expansion fully proven.
