Field observations recorded sharp borders, frequent clashes and substantial worker deaths, including an estimate of at least 15 million deaths at one Lake Hodges boundary during a six-month study. However, “millions of ants dying every month” is a historical summary published by Scientific American in 2011—not a verified 2026 count. The San Diego borders have not received a comparable academic reassessment for roughly two decades.
Which ants are fighting?
The combatants are Argentine ants (Linepithema humile), a South American species that became invasive in California. They are not different ant species fighting one another. California populations have unusually low genetic variation, a condition that helped workers from huge numbers of nests cooperate as single social units.

University of California, San Diego descriptions have identified a giant cooperative network extending from San Diego toward Ukiah. These networks are called supercolonies: connected or neighboring nests whose workers generally recognize one another as nestmates and share territory without fighting.
That tolerance stops at the boundary with a genetically distinct supercolony. Workers encountering ants from the other group can attack, bite and kill them. Genetic studies found less variation within a supercolony than between neighboring supercolonies, with little gene flow across the borders.

What the San Diego field study actually observed
A UC San Diego field study followed Argentine-ant contact zones weekly for six months. Its observations, later summarized in a 2026 IFLScience feature, showed abrupt behavioral boundaries and repeated aggression. A separate published description of the work reports “abrupt and well-defined behavioural boundaries” at 16 contact zones involving three pairs of supercolonies.
The summarized field observations reported fights at about 40 percent of site visits. Battles varied greatly in size, but the reported average was roughly 15,000 worker deaths per battle. At one Lake Hodges border, the estimated total reached at least 15 million worker deaths over the six-month observation period.

Those figures describe mortality observed or estimated at particular borders. They are not a census of every Argentine ant in San Diego and should not be multiplied into a precise citywide death rate.
How many ants die each month?

The safest answer to “are millions still dying every month?” is that no recent study in the available record verifies that rate. The monthly wording comes from 2011, while the best-known measurements cover a finite study period in the 2000s. Colony boundaries, colony sizes and battle intensity may have changed since then.

Why call it a “forever war”?
Researchers and science writers use the phrase as an analogy. During the observation period, borders moved back and forth rather than showing steady expansion by one side. Repeated clashes at nearly fixed lines can look like trench warfare: attacks recur, workers die, and neither supercolony quickly conquers the other.
The analogy does not mean ants follow human military strategy. Their behavior is driven by chemical recognition, territorial defense and colony-level selection, not by commanders, plans or political objectives.

How severe is inter-supercolony aggression?
San Diego’s pattern fits results from other invaded regions. In a 2002 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study of Argentine ants in southern Europe, workers died in 98 percent of inter-supercolony trials—235 of 241. The same study found severe aggression between supercolonies and no aggression among workers from the same supercolony.

That distinction explains why an Argentine-ant landscape can appear peaceful across large areas while remaining deadly at narrow contact zones. Most workers forage and move among nestmates; only workers meeting a rival supercolony encounter the lethal recognition response.

What this means for homeowners
A household infestation is a local pest-control problem, not something an individual property can solve at regional scale. Baits may reduce workers and help reach the nest, while residual liquid insecticides and granular products are other control categories used against Argentine ants. Choice depends on whether ants accept the bait, where products can be placed safely and whether children, pets or wildlife could contact them.
- Use a product labeled for Argentine ants and follow its application directions.
- Place bait where workers are active, but keep it away from children, pets and food-preparation surfaces.
- Do not assume a temporary decline means the regional source is gone; reinfestation can be rapid.
- Seek professional service when trails return repeatedly, nests extend across neighboring properties or safe placement is difficult.
These measures can suppress a local trail or nest. They cannot end the supercolony boundaries or stop regional encounters across San Diego.
The evidence-based verdict
San Diego’s Argentine ants have documented, lethal conflicts between rival supercolonies, and the old observations justify the “forever war” image. At least 15 million workers were estimated to have died at one Lake Hodges border during six months, and earlier coverage described millions of deaths per month along battlefronts. But that monthly figure is historical. Without a new, systematic survey, it should not be presented as a confirmed 2026 rate.
